Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger hung with Steve Lukather and his tech, Jon Gosnell, shortly before Toto’s show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. While Gosnell covered the nuts and bolts of the pedalboard and amp, Lukather showed what his signature Music Man guitars are capable of.
Although Lukather has been closely associated with a lot of great guitars during his career, he currently sticks nearly exclusively with his signature models. His No. 1 is an Ernie Ball Music Man LIII Ball Family Reserve loaded with his signature DiMarzio Transition pickups and a +15 dB boost.
His No. 2 is “Sammy,” which is basically the same model but with a custom, one-off finish featuring images of Sammy Davis Jr and Sterling Ball.

Steve is a wild man. Energy of two cats. I had a very handicapped friend of mine at a Toto show, Steve singled us out, bought my friend and I a beer, shot the breeze with us for ten minutes. Steve is tops in my book. Oh yeah,fabulous guitarist.

What's with all of the negative comments? Steve Lukather is as good as it gets: he's a brilliant player/songwriter/singer and, most importantly, an incredibly great guy. To all the haters out there: making libelous comments about a great artist merely reveals your short-comings. Be inspired by greatness rather than try to tear it down.

I think most guitarists will probably noodle when having a basic conversation with someone let alone when being interviewed and filmed. 'Have guitar, will play'. I suspect that had the interview happened offstage, and without an impending soundcheck, Luke would have been a bit more forthcoming and come over better to certain viewers here.

Steve just wants to play. The interviewer just wants to talk. You can figure how it will go. Interviewer should learn quickly that he needs to sort of ask an open question and let Steve do whatever. Then ask bigger questions like "Tell me about your live rig." THAT WAY, it's a longer response and so forth. Dude just seemed too giddy and starstruck.

Some of you really need to just chill. Luke is Luke. If you know anything about him, his behavior is totally par for the course. He WAS NOT being rude. He's a player who loves to play. If a guitar is in his hands, he's going to noodle. Rude would have been to not allow John to talk at all. That didn't happen. It must be very weird being judged so harshly by people that don't actually know anything about him as a person. The conclusions some of you are drawing would almost be funny if they weren't so completely off the mark. ...and no, he wasn't drunk either...SMH...
@dnp41

The older I get, the more I imagine Luke might just be the greatest electric guitarist of all time. He really is something. Steve is terrifying. Put him in any mashup with any player and Lukather schools. And to those who criticize his demeanour and random playing (in this video), it’s just him and how guitarists hang. The guy is always humble, cool and friendly.

Early in summer of 82 i heard some band do a remake song called "you really got me" the guitar solo was astounding. A month later i heard another band do a song called " hold the line' again , the guitar solo was a mind blower. TheTrueFortress I agree. He’s not only technically gifted, but he is more of a musician than just about any other player. He has chops to keep up or pass anyone but his ear and his musicality truly elevated him beyond anyone I’ve heard except Andy Timmons.

Calling him the best would be disrespectful to the many great guitar players out there. But he's definitely on another level compared to the majority of rock shredders who are great at what they do but also usually limited to only that. Lukather goes beyond the box many rockers are caught in and is a versatile musician with great feeling and musicianship, which allows him to be functional in many different styles and environments.

Love Leland Sklar's 'cameo' and the way Bohlinger dealt with it. Both cool and relaxed as if it was an everyday occurrence. :)

All you need to do is watch Johns face when Steve starts playing, he's like a kid in a candy store. The man is a legend and doesn't owe an interview to anyone. If anything they're interrupting his sound check and he's gracious enough to let them be there, he doesn't need the publicity.

I agree, Randy. Having interviewed artists for many year, I gotta say the guy doing the interview was not all that good. He, as the interviewer, has to understand that he is in Luke's world, not the other way around. Luke was very gracious!

Growing up in the 80s I would hear some Top 40 songs with some of the most amazing guitar solos. I would eventually find out that almost all of them were Steve Lukather. The final guitar solo for "Dirty Laundry" and "Running With the Night" come to mind.

One thing I see mentioned consistently about Luke, other than how talented, amazing, all his accomplishments, etc, is how underrated he is. I'm an Orioles fan from way back. And in some of those years, when they were on top, I noticed most other teams had more guys in the leaders category than the O's did. My father told me that was because they were a great TEAM, as opposed to a team with a few "stars." I think that's a good analogy as to why Steve Lukather is considered underrated. He was in a kick-ass band, oozing with talent, and he did so much amazing stuff for other top artists, that he just didn't get a ton of spotlight. And it seems to me he likes it that way. Hell, "Hold The Line" was one of my all-time favorite songs from the time it came out, but I didn't learn who SL was until much later. For comparison, everybody knew who the guitarist was in VH as soon as they made it big. Yet Steve is right up there with all the other GOAT's.

noticed his pedalboard doesn't have the amp's footswitch. Is Luke just playing a single channel and just using the distortion and OD pedals accordingly, or is Johnny changing the channels for him?
