Steve used to live down the street from me in the mid-1970s in Decatur, GA when he was with the Dregs. I knew then and there that if I couldn't at least be the best guitarist on my own block, then a career in music was probably not in the cards for me. Deep Purple is lucky for having Steve to elevate their music.

Weird thing is you would know where most things were. My local is in Straiton, Midlothian but Mason Ohio was 80% recognisable. Weird experience! What a fantastic interview and great to see the joy they have all meeting up too. Right on what Paul said about hand size and guitars. I remember back in the day wanting a Jem but my hand size is a lot smaller than Mr Vai's. I think Paul Gilbert's pinkie is longer than my index finger.

All the greatest guitarists are just genuinely good and compassionate human beings. Paul especially is the epitome of a fun, smart, talented, yet humble guy with a big heart. Steve, Steve and John are all great guys too with warm personalities. It's those personalities that set them all apart from other players who although sometimes are close in stature as far as technique goes, all the greats have this friendly charisma and big hearts. That's where the magic comes from.
