You really need to get rid of all the garbage in the building. It's absorbing and retaining water, preventing it from evaporating or drying out and creating more wood rot. A cheap and effective way to get rid of all the cardboard is get a chipper shredder turn it into a mulch and use it as a mulch under the trees on the property.
@toniasalways24 күн бұрын
Yes! Time spend now getting everything out of there will pay off in less repairs down the road. It's considerably easier to throw trash away than it is to buy new materials and replace destroyed things. Get that wet wood out of there before it wicks farther.

You are so right. It is happening behind the scenes. I know it may look like a lot on the channel but if you saw it when we started you couldn't even set foot in the place. It has been a years long journey. You can't imagine it if you don't see it yourself. But progress is being made.

This situation is one where, while I am glad you guys took steps to get it done, I would have absolutely brought in a structural engineer to provide more guidance. And probably a few more dudes, to get things done faster. 😅 I know budget is a constraint but you gotta get this one right.

Hey Chris my suggestion would be is the before you put a new beam I would call the roofing company to have them come and fix the roof before you put a new beam in because the same thing is going to happen

Why not lay a board on the floor to scan multiple beams and a vertical board wedged in to the beam above. No need to put on top of the beam underneath. I would put temp supports on all floor to carry the load down to the concrete floor
@andrewweber201022 күн бұрын
Right on.
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
well the floor was rotten as you saw in the video, and it needed to have all the cancer cut out anyway so the most solid part was the beam on the second floor. We could have done your suggestion but it would have required backing the vertical support insert further away from the original upright beam on both sides of it.

I love this project Iv;e been following since you started this channel. I hate to say this but you are in over your head on this part. The condition of those support beams is deadly. You need the help pf a structural engineer to detail repair plans. As a roofer I wouldn't send myself or my crew on top of a structure that is in danger of collapse. This level of repair work is way more than two inexperienced guys can do with a winch and a boom truck. Your passion and willingness to learn is why I watch. You have to do this right or you will end up with a condemed building that you can't move anyone into.
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
Thanks for being in my corner I appreciate that a lot. I will get as much help if not professional help as I can possibly afford I promise.
@mcgjohn2224 күн бұрын
really good progress. was a great move Bob had to transfer the load to the good beam. Installing support structure always chews up tons of time. You guys did quite well for the time allocated. One thing you could consider is to use Polyurethane glue in addition to the carriage bolts to hold the short beam cut sections to the longer beam.
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
I have seen that glue is sometimes much harder than the actual wood so that is a good tip! Thanks.

Well in the end we were able to at least buy some time. Which was a GIGANTIC relief for me. This wasn't the actual repair just a stopgap. Well get lots of input before we proceed with the actual repair.

Another major step forward...or at least a step that will eliminate potential major steps back. Are you writing your own lyrics for the songs these days?

Why didn't you just put the wood in the bucket?
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
because it is about 14 foot long and the bucket is 3. there weren't a lot of places to strap to and if we had, the fire escape is not to trustworthy to step onto for loosening the straps.
@kevinhudson557024 күн бұрын
Why didn’t you guys use bottle jacks on both sides of the rotten beam jack each side evenly then place your beams under it then let the bottle jacks down on the the support beams
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
I once had bottle jacks under them but they popped out because the bottle jacks I have, have too narrow of a base, when the beam overhead shifted they popped out.
@bufords24 күн бұрын
not sure if you have priced steel I beam lately, expensive terrible. I'm thinking it might be cheaper to make your own wood beams like the temp ones your making now. Look for local saw mills, you may find some reclaimed barn beams or get rough cut timber to make them.

yes there is an amish saw mill that I have done business with in the past 30 minutes away.

Chris---this question has been with me since the beginning of your journey..Approx how much are the property taxes on your building?
@brickandsole20 күн бұрын
they are 1,200 dollars a year. I just found out that I am zoned in an Illinois enterprise revitalization area so I can apply to freeze that amount as I make improvements to the building so I don't get penalized for going to the expense and trouble of fixing the building.
