I was watching a slow mo video of a golf swing and noticed it looked like a picture of me at 11 years old skipping rocks on the Tennessee river. I wondered if anyone else had noticed the similarity, so I did a Google search. This video showed up first. Such an intuitive way to think about a golf swing! Thanks for the video.

Steve, that was the best description of the right arm and wrist motions that I have encountered on YT. Until now, I was not understanding how the forearm really rolled and snapped the wrist through I thought the key was to roll my right arm over my left but that just pulled or pushed every shot giving me very inconsistent results.

The part about keeping your forward posture and letting your hands go low by your shin really helped me. Even though previously I didn't "pull" on the downswing, I think I just hung on too long before letting my right arm start to straighten. Thanks Steve.

Now, with teaching of right arm action, I could not wait to get to the range to work on this drill. Thanks Steve.

I know a fellow who continued playing golf after he lost his left arm just above the elbow in a grain auger mishap. He used the rock skip motion with what he had left to pretty good effect. Let's just say the motion and method came "naturally" to him after the accident. It works. Thanks for the clear, concise analysis of the motion and principles, and helpful drills. Third time I've watched it. I pick up a new subtlety every time. After two surgeries, my right shoulder is a train wreck, and since a few tendons and pieces of bone are missing, I've lost a lot of strength in that joint. This swing imagery helps me overcome that limitation.

Steve, I keep watching this video, love the opening lines left arm is a frisbee and right arm is a stone skimming, so my issue is I am left handed and play right handed. So the right arm is hard to try and skim and left becomes a pulling which doesn’t help. I really struggle with reliability of the swing. I love to see a video on being left arm dominant but playing right, the pit fulls and fixes. Thanks for your great work

One of the biggest issues most starting golfers face is using shafts way too stiff for them. They start strengthening their grips and doing all sorts of compensations because the club wont release because its too stiff/heavy. You especially see it with the smaller statured kids. This engrains lots of awful compensations, basically, for the rest of their golfing lives, which as we know are not really repeatable...and the give up! I hit a 5 iron about 200 yds at age 52, I use Dynamic Gold R300. If I switch to what a fitter wants i.e. an X100 its thin shots to the right or massive compensation pulls after a few of those. I watch videos of both swings with the 2 shaft flexes and I am in the slot with the R300 and over the top out of balance with the X100. Its taken me years to figure this out ( I dont have very big forearms , I am 6'3" and have a very languid slow transition ). Again, just trying to stress. Most people cannot hit stiff shafts as their initial set of irons

So, I did this today ON THE COURSE. I did not even try it on the range...just went to the course and jumped into the deep end of the pool with both feet. Right away, practice swings feel smoother and faster. Hole #1 is a straight away Par 4 at 350 yards. If I smash a good drive, I will get about 230 yards. Today, I hit my first drive using the 'rock skip' technique into the pot bunker that was a solid 270 yards away from the tee box. Hole #2 is a 140 yard par 3...I normally hit a 7 iron...well, today, I hit it past the green by about 20 freaking yards. I have not hit a ball this hard and this far since the last century. I hit some pretty ugly shots the rest of the day trying this, but I also hit some REAL beauties that turned out horribly wrong because I hit them long or they went to far...case in point a par 4 that requires a 3 wood lay up...well, now it requires a 2 hybrid layup as I hit my 3 wood a solid 250 off the tee and straight into trouble. I can't wait to get to the range and work on this. Skip the stone, it works!

He externally rotates it phenomenally but you might be missing how much hip flexion he maintains into the slot...this is why the elbow appears to be in front so early.

My biggest problem, as I believe most amateur/poor golfers is we cannot visualize the 30 degree tilted plane. We may start on it, but somewhere in the back swing we move to a 90 degree circle to get the club face square at impact. Probably reason for thrusting pelvis. Your using chair to keep pelvis back is best I have seen. Also reminding everyone it is a circle/hula hoop should keep people (like me) from finishing high instead of around.

I'm a firm believer in the lead arm being the most important arm for strike and aim. I need to work on adding in this trail arm move for power without adding dynamic loft - that's the issue for me with the right arm, dynamic loft too high.

I can still remember the excitement upon finding the perfect skipping stone and sending it flying across the water. Looks like I'll be skipping rocks at the range tomorrow.
@redwave3520
@redwave3520 3 жыл бұрын
To incorporate this movement into your golf swing properly, you need to have a strong grip, which tilts your upper body back, away from the ball, and sets your elbow back under your rear shoulder. Then you need to pretend like you are skipping the stone! You turn back, away from the "water", raise up, and then power down by driving down by squatting and turning, with your elbow tucked into your side and your wrist snapping through. it is a natural movement to get the chosen result - skipping the stone across the water. You HAVE to do these things to get the stone to skip, with some power and distance, as Steve says. Concentrate on the process of skipping the stone, and then incorporate it into your golf swing WITHOUT thinking about it, and you will be amazed at your results!!
