I’m old enough to remember-because I saw it-Jewish and Catholic kids being discriminated against and bullied by Protestant kids when public schools were indulging in prayer in the classroom. I have never taught in a public school that prevented student groups from meeting together before school, during lunch, and after school on school grounds. The problem years ago was with school-required prayer IN THE CLASSROOM and the ignorance of teachers and school administrators. The restriction on prayer in the public schools was about requiring students to pray at the start of the school day in the classroom before or after the saying of the pledge of allegiance. What these people with Trump on this issue are doing is failing to fully understand the 1st amendment and its grounding in freedom of religion because of the institution of a state religion in Europe that resulted in horrific religious wars. Better education in history and civics is needed so that we can better know the Enlightenment principles upon which this country was founded. I’m tired of the institutional indulgence of ignorance in the public schools that has resulted in the conviction that Americans have some cultural civil war going on. This cultural war is a phony war perpetrated by politicians.

Real hope for our children. When I was a child, every school day started with the pledge of allegiance, a Bible reading and saying the Our Father. That should never been an issue. Just like classes are offered for various subjects, classes should be offered for students to express their faith through prayer or other means. Since many people express their faith in different ways, American educational institutions should provide classes for for such.

And my right to speak about my religion and have my opinion(appropriately obviously). But most people don't need a class. I personally have schedule time to pray and pray before eating and quickly before each class. Students should individually manage their prayer schedule if need be. Or cone together with people of the same faith to prat during lunch if they so wish. There are many opportunities. As well as clubs. We don't need to add classes to have people "express" their faith if the topic is not relevent or appropriate. Just as we should not have classes for LGBTQ+ to "express" their sexuality. And neither should it be taught if not relevent to the class or topic. LGBTQ+ can form clubs before or after school, during lunch. If they so wish

I think it’s a typical Trump ruling: It sounds great at first sight, but it’s extremely problematic to implement. At least not, if you acknowledge the right for people of *all* denominations to pray in their own way. The reason public schools took prayer out of the curriculum (not necessarily off the school grounds) is because they don’t want to favor one religion over another.

In the 1960’s, our Principle came over the intercom every morning and prayed for all of us children. He prayed for our teachers, our school, our homes, our country. It meant so much to hear his prayer everyday. In high school, a group of kids started a prayer group before school in the gym and later in the library. Faith and prayer are so important. I served as a Pastor in countries of the first world as well as in the third world. I was called in each of those countries many a times to pray for inmates in the prisons. As long as he dont disturb other students. I went to a catholic school but our priest would always reminds us that if we pray, especially in public, we must also remember to respect the space of others. We can pray in silent and not seek attention and pray loud.

Prayer never left schools. How it was done changed. That's all and to tell you the truth it made my generation and younger generation stronger because we made the choice to pray, have religious clubs, have bible meetings, choose to support Christian schools. It changed... it did not go away. If it did in your schools then you allowed it. Do you know the rights you have been blessed with?
