I left my Fundamentalist Baptist church in Alabama shortly after Trump became President in 2016 because the hate-filled, rightwing, Christian Nationalist rhetoric was just off the charts. For the record & because words have meaning.... What she is describing, blaming others for the actions taken by the blamer, is projection. The term gaslight comes from the time when house lighting was provided by gas lamps, turn one on in a different room the lamps everywhere else will flicker. When someone is gaslighting you, they are attempting to convince you that the flicker you saw wasn't real, that the light in the other room was never turned on. It's a form of manipulation to make you doubt what you saw with your own eyes or doubt what you heard with your own ears. Example of gaslighting: "J6 was just a tourist visit" Side note: the origin of gaslighting someone comes from a British play in the late 1930s "Gas light" & made its way across the pond in the mid 1940s American movie of the same name.

I needed this! My mom and I got into a horrible fight because of her support for Trump. Usually we just disagree and move on because we have our right to choose. But when she boldly stated that Trump has been choosen by Jesus. I lost it. Now she's upset with me for calling her delusional! I let her know I wouldn't allow my kids around this nonsense. The timing is bad too because it's my youngest sons bday party today. We should be celebrating as a family but can't and now she's playing victum because I gave her facts about how she's been living her life recently and that I was concerned for her mental health. This indeed is tearing family and friends apart. I don't even bring up politics usually for peace sake but every time she's got to nit pick and start it in conversation. They are gaslighting, but your explanation/definition of what “gaslighting” is was quite off: “Manipulating someone into questioning their own perception of reality. Maliciously making them believe what’s true isn’t true for an agenda. Attempting to convince people that what they/you’re seeing, hearing, & remembering isn’t what did/is happened/happening.” When one side is misusing language on purpose, the other side must be extra careful to avoid misusing language by accident - an unfair double standard, but an unfortunately true side effect of the tactic.
