The church referred to is (more like was) the Church of St. Porphyrius. It is one of the oldest continuously used sites of Christian worship in the world, thought to be the third oldest. Porphyrius became Bishop of Gaza in 395 and the church was built in 402 to replace the former Christian Basilica in Gaza which had been trashed in the early 360s. It is claimed that Porphyrius was buried beneath the floor of the church, but who knows now that the whole thing is just a hole in the ground? That's what the IOF destroyed, apart from killing many Christians. It was a vile act of vandalism as well as murder, comparable with the Taliban blowing up the Bamiyan Buddhas in 2001. If that was a great crime of cultural and historical vandalism for which the Taliban stands condemned, then why not the same outcry about the Church of St.Porphyrius?

Back in the 1990’s I was working overseas and became friends with a great couple and gradually I discovered they were Palestinian and Christian. They definitely didn’t fit my “American” stereotype. This couple were both classy, well educated and worked for international companies. Gradually they shared the rudeness… the discrimination… they faced every time they landed at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv then went through security control at the Palestinian / Israeli border, They’re suit case full of gifts for their families would be dumped on the floor, some gifts were confiscated. We Westerners have difficulty realizing not all Palestinians are terrorists or uneducated. If you would in the Gulf countries you’ll run into all kinds of well educated Palestinians that hold important positions in businesses with great families.

Anna’s comments on the inviolability of all life, as opposed to just Christians’ lives, are valid. The value of the interview, in my view, is that it highlights the hypocrisy of right wing (Christian fundamentalist) support for the Israeli government who are killing, on an ongoing basis, Christians in the Holy Land. And the fact that there was such a backlash is evidence that they (the right wing Christian fundamentalists) appreciated the indefensibility of their position.

People don't understand that Israel has created a Palestinian prison camp. Electricity is sporadic. Food is scarce. Housing is substandard. Water is polluted. There is a large border wall between Israel and Palestine that keeps Palestinians, except for a very few, imprisoned and unable to go into Israel to even get any basic supplies for living. Hamas had been lying low for quite a while. It wasn't until Netanyahu was elected that they attacked Israel. They were very concerned for the Palestinians, whom they regard as a cousin, so to speak, that they feel the need to take care of. Hamas sees themselves in a Che Guevara type of role, using guerrilla tactics to root out the oppressor. I don't endorse Hamas's actions, but I don't endorse Israel's either. I understand where Hamas is coming from, but I can't say the same about Israel's PM, who is an unyielding war hawk. The fact that Israel won't even consider a truce is appalling and unconscionable. I don't care about the religion of who's getting killed - a dead person is a dead person and people of all faiths are dying.

Such as, religious vs. non-religous, Texans vs. Californians, Yankees fans vs. Dodger fans, Dems vs. Repubs...etc. However, the strongest upheaval between two groups is the religious differences. You probably say that political differences cause more issues. However, if you look at them deeper, you'll see that they stem from religious differences. (Abortion, gay rights...). Throughout history, a lot of blood has been spilt in the name of religion. BUT, there are always exceptions, like you, like me. I am not religious, but I would fight for your rights to follow your religion.
