I've used the second edition too, and I really like it because it breaks the lessons up to the amount you might accomplish in a day, and has review at the beginning of each lesson. So, whereas one lesson in the first edition would take three days, and you only do the review on the first day, in the second edition it would be broken up into three lessons with different reviews at the beginning of each.

Love Rightstart math!!! First time homeschool mom this year and used it for my jk, SK, grade 4 and grade 6 kids. We'll be using it next year for the younger 3 again. The older levels (level C and F were the ones we used) have generally 1 worksheet per day.

I want to switch my 1st grader and 4th grader to RightStart. They’ve been doing traditional worksheets with some manipulatives. Is it hard for someone to jump right it without knowing the principles since K?

@@YvetteBronx my kids were in regular school last year so we all started fresh with RightStart this year. The lessons were very easy for me to follow. My oldest (grade 6) didnt love it because the "school ways" were fairly ingrained for him already, but all of the others took to it right away.

Also if anyone hasnt tried the Math curriculum from Moving Beyond the Page, it incorporates read alouds, and manipulatives along with lessons and is far more advanced for a child that needs much more stimulation. They are more of an investment but, if loved, can really be used over and over again for your children. The upper grades have computer based quizzes which is so helpful when teaching kids how to use a computer independently.

That was great! I use Shiller Math and it is definitely fun and kinesthetic for us but it is going slow and I feel like it takes too gentle an approach and then it doesn't solidify what we see because we come back to it in a week. I feel Right Start is muuuch more work in one lesson. It might tire my boy quick or myself and between that and reading we would feel done for the day, haha. But it is thorough and effective. I love the visual aspect of it!

Thanks for watching! What I have found is it's okay to break the lessons up into smaller chunks. Some lessons we can do the whole thing through (like today, actually!) and others I do it in 2 or sometimes three sittings. With Math, there is no need to rush it! Going at your child's pace is much better than checking off a lesson. I hope it goes well!

@JoyfulNoiseLearning4 жыл бұрын
Emily Stepp It depends on what you are looking for- I believe that Right Start is more thorough and better in the long run. But if you need open and go workbook, Master Books is better at that. I think both are GOOD curriculums. If you are getting RS for your oldest and plan to use it with other children later, it would be worth your investment. ☺️

Thank you for this video! You broke it down in such a simple way! I do have a question and it may be silly but I'd like to know. I know Rightstart teaches to refer to 14 as ten 4. How does that work if my child is in a social setting and wants to refer to the number 14 or any other number. Will my child know to also refer to 14 as fourteen or will he just know to say ten 4? Does that make sense?
@JoyfulNoiseLearning5 жыл бұрын
M Blanco great question! I found that my kids knew both ways to say it. They will being hearing the social way to count through songs and other people, and even mom and dad, so they will be familiar with that. But in your Right Start math time they will hear the “ten and 4”, or “4 ten for 40”, to help them understand place value. Once they get to 3rd grade or so, they can start using the number names normally, but have an understand of ones, tens, etc.... It worked well for my oldest!

Did you feel there was enough review in the beginning of B to get comfortable with the usage of manipulatives etc?? Thanks for the great video! :)

Hi! Thanks for your question. I think that the songs, rhymes and games would work really well for your son! The exercises and games will just help him with what he is learning at school. You don't have to do EVERY lesson, or EVERY game, just go through and do it a couple times a week and it will be a great supplement to his learning. That's actually how I use Right Start now. It's not our main math curriculum but a supplement.

Hi I have been looking at other videos of yours and I am wondering why you didn’t continue to use Rightstart? Is it just too parent intensive I am a little drawn back by that but I would like to try for the first 3 years??? I am using Singapore math right now for first grade and it’s going well but I am new to homeschooling and I am so stressed about math since I struggled so much with math. I had so many gaps in my education and i don’t want to fail him...
@JoyfulNoiseLearning4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, the main reason I switched was because of my personality 😉 I get bored with things and like to try new things. So I like to switched it up! Right start IS a great program and my kids learned really well from it, but the ONE thing they didn’t like is it wasn’t clear when the lesson ended. They were unsure of what was expected of them and how long it would go. I would often break lessons in half. One of my kids really needed a clear beginning and ending in a workbook. But I STILL USE the Right Start games and activities along with the workbook we use.
@cindylau68744 жыл бұрын
How long does it take to go through an entire lesson? I like all the activities but I'm wondering if it takes a long time.
@JoyfulNoiseLearning4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! The older edition has pretty long lessons. What I ended up doing was setting a timer. We started at the top of the lesson and went as far as we could with the timer, then when the timer stopped, we stopped. We just picked up where we left off the next day. It worked well for us! The newer edition has better organized lessons. I think they are about 20 minutes long, which is a good amount for a math lesson. Anywhere from 15-20 minutes for youngest kiddos is a good time to stick to.

BoxLove thanks for watching! I would recommend starting on B for your 7 year old :) The first 10 lessons or so go quickly through Level A. A 7 year old should be fine going quickly. As far as open and go, I say it is. I just glance at the materials needed and grab those. the most prep you have is before you start the book. You have to prep the manipulatives and cards. Once you have them separated in bags/boxes/drawers, then it’s easy to grab and go for each lesson. I can do a video on how I organize my supplies if you wish!
@boxlove72836 жыл бұрын
Yes! Please! I have watched both videos now 3 times lol! I couldn't figure out what level she should start at but B it might be. I'm looking on eBay now for kits and the books. Does B start out as review and then what? Also is this easy for parent to understand?! I'm not math minded at all!

Hi, I used RS level A with my now 7 yo. It is not open and go! In fact, it is the most teacher intensive math curriculum I've seen! I switched to a different one for this reason and we are much happier now :) We feel like math finally doesn't consume our days anymore!
@JoyfulNoiseLearning6 жыл бұрын
@@boxlove7283 I'm so sorry I just saw this comment! It went to spam :( B starts out review for sure, which is nice, so it gets the kids warmed up, and also familiar with the abacus and the way that Right Start teaching place value and addition. (It's a bit different than what we are used to!). I feel like the parent part takes a little getting used to, but once you a are familiar with it, it is very easy! What have you decided? Let me know if you have any other questions!
@bethanyatkinson69445 жыл бұрын
As long as you have your supplies organized to where you can just grab one container to take them all to the table with you, and you can take each thing out without having to unstack it, it's pretty open and go. I absolutely love this curriculum! I do know a couple other people who use it, and the cons seem to be: since it teaches very conceptually, it sometimes confuses people about why it's doing things in such a weird way. I was a math major, and there have been a couple things I felt like I needed to look ahead and see it "why the heck are they doing that that way". Every time I have done that, I have completely understood and agreed with how they're doing it... But if you're not as strong in mathematics concepts, it can make it really hard to trust the process, or know what you're looking for them to learn through the activity. (I eat you may find that you were more comfortable reading through the lesson ahead of time) The other thing is that for kids who are decidedly not kinesthetic (or for any kids who are super introverted and don't enjoy talking through their whole lesson) it may not be a good fit. This is the only math curriculum I've seen that does a great job balancing all three learning styles, uses them simultaneously, and approaches concepts from pretty much every angle possible to make sure they understood. But if it confuses you as the teacher, or you don't see the vision in the way they teach, that will affect the kid's experience of it as well.
