"There's no way to tighten a loose carriage bolt." You can easily grip the excess bolt past the nut with a vice-grips and tighten the nut. If the bolt is not extending past the nut, the head can be gripped with vice-grips held parallel to the bolt. If necessary, a small indention can be made on each side of the head with a screwdriver so the tips of the pliers can get a grip. The vice grip hold on the bolt does not need to be as strong as the torque to tighten it, as the bolt will stop spinning as soon as the head presses against the wood. That double beam would be good support if more blocking was placed to bind the two sides together. My state allows beams built like this.

I think I could show calculations to disprove just about everything you're complaining about - except the deck rail posts. I don't like their attachment, use a thru-bolt (carriage type). They could have filled all the holes in the hangers as well. Easy fixes. That the rim board on the end of the ledger covers the leger, that's normal. I use double 2x's on the rim board all the time with the outside board covering the attachments for asthetics. The double rim board also stiffens the railing post attachments. The carriage bolt complaint is a non-starter, I spec carriage bolts often. I could not account for code differences between your municipality and mine, but the double board beam is perfectly acceptable to me as an engineer as long as it calculated out. What's the difference between a 4x10 and two 2x10's? Nothing. Were I the homeowner, I'd invest a little in an engineer's opinion before accepting any of these "problems" from a home inspector. I really hate "inspectors" with little training in engineering, justifying their jobs.

Good info on the carriage bolt. I have used them before but didn't think about the wood softening. Now, KZbin experts don't start blowing me up for this. It was on my own deck and I am admittedly learning. 😂

I disagree on the carriage bolt assessment. It will keep the nails from withdrawing and the nails will provide shear strength. They will need to be tightened in a year, but no biggie.

What you should do with these videos is document the entire process through resolution with the builder, the deck builder, the county, etc. and report what has gone on to make it right in the end.

One of those balusters is also "end-grain" nailed (or screwed) into the end of the double rim joist. Those things can never seem to stand up to the code required 250lb lateral load requirement, but it probably doesn't stand a chance with the end-grain nailing into a 2x10. Yikes!
@pcatful
@pcatful Ай бұрын
Yes the rim joist can twist, even when it is connected to joists or blocking perpendicularly. Nails and screws can only hold weather-beaten wood so much. Rail bracing requires hardware or design to create a strong positive resistance.
@pcatful

Don't agree with your analysis on the landing, but, yes it was done wrong. I don't believe that cantilevered part is sagging down. The landing posts either were pushed up by soil or it wasn't built level. They could have easily put the landing joists on the main beam instead of that sloppy attachment, and the main beam and posts would handle it fine.

Up to 10 years you can bring a case against a contractor in our state. YMMV. That implies there was a proper contract. If there is any sort of mediation, you probably have to look at letting them fix it first. Don't bother getting the city involved if you didn't get a permit.

BS on the carriage bolt complaint and the ability of cantilevers to carry more load (lag screw & strap them together so they can not pull apart). Any carriage bolt with protruding threads can be gripped by vice grips for tightening, but why would it loosen anyhow. But joist hangers should certainly be filled with approved nails

I agree with you. Many of the "defects" he points out are perfectly fine including the way the stair landing is attached to the cantilever portion of the deck. The beam boards being separated and carriage bolts are fine as well.

@@reichpanzer2418 I have a feeling many new products for "safety" or improvements have been created by manufacturers not engineers. There are definitely better building practices but all of a sudden everything our grandfathers did, that is still in use, is bad.

I agree with you on the carriage bolts. I have sen tons of pole barns with roofs supported exactly that way and it's never a problem and I believe that roof is way more load than you're ever going to see on that deck. I would have to disagree on the landing/stairs, however. That seems to have been added later because why on earth would it be built that way if it wasn't? I would think a better method would be to have removed the original rim joist and run the joists for the landing back onto the beam and sister them to the original joists with through-bolts. The new rim joist at the edge of the stairs should have been doubled. This would completely eliminate the misalignment between the original deck and the new landing.

There's no roof over the deck. It's just going to rot and fall down.
@pcatful
@pcatful Ай бұрын
Not if made with the proper wood species. Decks are made all over the country. In wet humid rainy areas, and places with snow there's more of a challenge. Decks require maintenance and, yes, replacing over time. It's not going to "just rot and fall down" if it has no roof. It might if it is built wrong.

@michaelstramm2366 Ай бұрын
Well, i dont know, but to my taste those Decks are shitty not only in construction but allready at the planing Level. Those Decks steal the light from the underlaying Etages. It looks to me like , those owners just have the idea of having a deck weather it fits to the house or the suroundings or absolutely not. Next Point is, if you want Quality ,well it comes at a price and if you cant afford this price you are better without any Deck then with one that darkens the lower Portion of the house nor the danger of having incidents while the thing was technically just unsafe. My two cents in this.
@pcatful
@pcatful Ай бұрын
I think the shading of the lower portion is not so important. Maybe the design of the house could have had it both ways. Full enjoyment of the main story is more important. Most decks are too big. Once you have a space for a dining table and few chairs in a sitting area, you shouldn't waste your space and money with endless deck (unless it is some vacation home with lakeside views for the extended family). Look how big this deck is and it's empty (could be because it's off season or the deck is too dangerous?).
