Unboxing & first Impressions of the new Rigol MSO7000 mixed signal oscilloscope.
Note, this is NOT a review, it is a single take, unedited, unprepared unboxing and just dicking around with it. If you do not like this style of video do not watch it.

I think that the need to buy licences for serial decoding is a joke, years ago when it was a rare thing, sure, but these days it should be considered a required (and standard) function, just like the ability to see a waveform.

It gets worse, UART and i2c/SPI are $900 *each*. Damn that's steep. I might have been willing to cut them some slack if it was like $300 for both, but that's pretty hard to swallow.

At those prices it would be better to buy a 2nd scope which offers those features built in (like Siglent), and not bother to upgrade the Rigol.

Also to protect the plug on the wiring harness back to the scope, instead of plugging and unplugging multiple times wearing out the harness plug you wear out the adapter which can be replaced cheaper than the harness ;)

The tilting feet at the back make a lot of sense with tall thin scopes. When you tilt the screen back it is better to have more support from the back of the case for stability when you press the upper buttons.

I think the digital signal cable “adapter” thing is just there because it has the colours on it. Also, I’d wish they’d use those high refresh rate screens, 144Hz refresh would be amazing on a scope.

So the main jog wheel for the UI is a tiny knob less than 10mm diameter. Chances are the user will need to use it more than most other buttons. 50mm should be minimum diameter.

I think 4000 series is the best bang per bucks in its class (especially if you ""buy"" the sw upgrades ;-) I have DS4024 upgraded to 500 MHz and DG4160 and both are very good pieces of equipment for the money.
@AttitudeGames
@AttitudeGames 6 жыл бұрын
Well mine is the DS4014 (4 input 100MHz) due to that was all I required for all my projects, I did way up the prices for the features and yes the DS4014 was the best solution for me. I did buy the SPI Software Option (I know silly me) and then brought the "rest" ;) so now I have a 500MHz 4 input Digital Scope. As for the Gens or Analysers, I have still yet to got those. Also don't you mean a DG4162 i.e. (160MHz 2Ch 500MSa/s)
@ales_xy
@ales_xy 6 жыл бұрын
I buyed 200MHz model instead of your 100MHz, because there wasn't 500MHz bw upgrade officially available for 100MHz model, so I was worried if the "unofficial" would work properly. Apparently, there's no issue, so I spent more money than I needed, too :-) There's much worse situation with arb wave gen, because they aren't calibrated above their official bw limit. It's doable, but you must calibrate the instrument after unlocking, otherwise it's useless. And I wasn't sure I will be able to do it properly with my current equipment, so I took the 160MHz model.
@AttitudeGames
@AttitudeGames 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well where I only really needed a maximum bandwidth of 100MHz at the time I went for that model, it was to last me about 5 to 10 years (already had it for 5 years now), as for the "unofficial" bw upgrade yeah it works, I fed a ~418MHz Osc into it and I could see a very clean signal and was still able to zoom in to 1ns/div fine.

Didn’t HP used to have the blocks on the end of the digital probes? They had the termination in them. That way if you built the termination into your board you could remove the terminator and plug it right into your board for minimal signal disturbance. No added loading. Also having termination on your socket when the analyzer wasn’t attached meant less emitted EMI so you could maybe pass FCC without having to redesign the board to eliminate probe stubs.

I haven't owned a scope yet, I'm currently saving for my first one. I'm wondering if this would be a good scope I won't outgrow for a little while. Also, that first bootup time may or may not only happen once. Some devices are set up so that the OS will finish installing on the first time it boots. Might be interesting to see if it does that again or not.

According to Rigol, DS700-BND: "7000 Series Function and application bundle option including PWR, AWG, and all Serial Decode options. AWG option only works on MSO models." So the Serial Decode should function on a DS7k, you don't need the MSO7k.

Rigol seems to have free updates nearly all the time. Free Protocol analysis, Waveform Generator and Power Analysis are included at this writing. Then there’s always the hacking route as Dave mentioned. I went for the MSO5074 and hacked to max everything available. Everything including 350 MHz, max memory, all features, LA probes, etc. for under a $1000 USD!

Even low end FPGAs have DDR3 controllers these days, and both altera and xilinx have tools that do most of the development work automatically. All the engineers have to do is to enter the timing information and hook up the generated interface to the rest of their design.

EEVblog2 I'm not trying to say it's not a good scope for the price. It's just high for the average person. I would love to be able to afford it for use on my bench. I could really use a higher frequency scope on my bench when working on VHF transceivers. Going to be a while. I have a few years to save up for a new Rohde & Schwartz communications test set ($40K). After that I'll be looking for something like this.

If you're a professional, it's a tool that you use to make money so it'll pay itself back in time. And even smaller company with even a bit of revenue will be able to purchase this without worrying. So it's not expensive unless you're a hobbyist that doesn't make money from electronics... and then you don't really even need it most probably.

I likely missed it, but did you check the update rate? is it 500K peak in native clothinh As its becomming more and more a problem, these specs on scopes waveform update rate. and specially Rigol, they will push inflated specs, that simply are not the case, unless your in some special handicapped mode where 90% of the feaures are removed.. Like we see on their latest gens.. 500K on DHO800&900, 1million on DHO1000 series and 1.5mio on DHO4000 series, but in reality the peak in ideal timebase are more like 25 to 30k for DHOxxx and around 50k for DHO1000 and perhaps the same around 50k on DHO4000.. and they will not inform you in the sale specs.. its all tainted with these inflated numbers..

EEVblog2 it's easy to miss, I just notice crap like this for some reason. It'll be interesting if it actually talks PCI Express or if they just borrowed the socket. You should be able to find this out upon teardown - you can poke around for power or maybe more definitively, a clock signal, while looking at the pinout (this'll be PCIe x1 by the looks?), or just see if there are any PCIe controllers or some form of traffic warden like there tends to be. Even ARM chips nowadays are being given PCI Express lanes. Useful for high speed storage ala SATA Express or NVM Express for flash, useful for camera interfaces, everything really. Its just a super easy, super cheap way to do very high speed general IO and data shuffling. Embedded devices are getting progressively more integrated like this. The iPhone uses an embedded form of displayport for its LCD, and usws NVM Express for storage, as an example. While I've got your attention, I've never owned a scope, just getting into electronics. I know I want to save for a good scope, and I want MSO functionality as well. I'd like something I won't outgrow for a little while. I really like the look of the Rhode & Schwarz (sp?), I just like the finish on them. The UI looks super polished. I just notice and appreciate that stuff. But I won't ignore these Chinese guys like rigol siglent etc if there's value to be had. As you can see I'm a bit of an embedded geek. So itd make sense for me to have a scope that will let me poke about with this sort of stuff. I'm also a big car guy so having g CANBUS, LIN, flexray (which is a higher speed bus Germans use), and ALDL (General motors. Used on commodores and it's basically RS-232 with different signalling voltages, that's it. You can plug into most commodores with an entirely passive cable if you have a serial socket on your computer). But I'll stop rambling, sorry! I know you probably get this question all the goddamn time but what would you recommend? I might say hi on the forum too, been meaning to do that for a while. Cheers, from Brissy!

No, it is different than a smartphone. If you have a 10 year old smartphone, modern apps you want might not work on it, or even the installed apps might stop working. But if you have a 10 year old oscilloscope, it might be all you need for your daily work, so no reason to buy a new one. I bought an Agilent DSO-X 3012A, 7 years ago, and I don't miss anything, so I guess I will still use it for the next 7 years.

Fair enough dave it looked small, but i am looking at a video of a display on a display :/ my thought was if the pad was a bit bigger then you could probably use it a lot quicker. Thanks for replying

The hardware and memory etc is already built and the cost of such including development is included in the initial purchase price. But you cant access these features without purchasing additional licenses. This gouging really needs to stop. When you purchase the hardware the full features of that hardware should be available. I could understand if there was a limited memory and you had to buy an additional card. Or you had to buy a physical card or plug in module for the IC2 etc; Paying extra to use the hardware you have already purchased is a scam and about time that this scam was shunned. I wonder if they have a license to quick boot it.

We should be happy that those features are still not a subscription thing with monthly or yearly fees.

Scope manufacturers probably don't make any profit from the scope itself. They get their money from big companies buying the whole license package.

They would like you to believe this, but of course they make profit from the scope price point. The Licenses are just gravy.

I preface everything said in this post with IN MY OPINION. All oscilloscopes are extremely under powered for what they do. Let's say you buy an xxMHz 2GSa/s scope, the SoC that's running the sampling needs enough horsepower to process 2 billion samples per second which means you would need an SoC running around 2GHz(maybe half depending on the SoC instruction set layout?) to process all that data and only that data. You would then need head room to to deposit the relevant information into ram or vram somewhere for another SoC to display on the screen. You would also need additional headroom on the same SoC that handles sampling for all the ISR's that would be required to handle the different inputs in a fast enough manner that you don't get the crappy 3-15fps display like you see in the video because the sampling SoC can't deposit the information often enough for it to be displayed on screen This problem only gets worse as you move up to faster and faster scopes. Also, that scope claims 10GSa/s on a single channel which I highly doubt it can actually do correctly. I'm assuming it has 4x 2.5GSa/s ADC's which are fed phase shifted clocks to achieve the interleaving required to get 10GSa/s effective. I'd be curious to see if they actually phase shifted all the clock signals so that all 4 ADC's are sampling the input at completely different times; I suspect they aren't. The 100,000 waveforms/sec is a total gimmick. A wave form is just plotted point over time of a set of measurements. This means wave forms are constructed from a data set of points. You only need to generate and display 60 wave forms every second because of screen refresh, and you only need ONE wave form once triggered to display on screen. Generating 100,000 wave forms on the fly is meaningless and is a waste of computing power that could be used to do something else *cough* something higher than 3-15fps on the display would be nice :P Someone please correct me if I'm working on the wrong assumption/s

the hdmi out has to be a bit of wankery! if you cant read that huge 10in screen youre in the wrong profession!...that said..that screen is a bit too reflective..wack a sceen protector on it..might take a bit of reflection out of it ...and save the screen being damaged edit: that 10in screen should be able to do 720p no problems..i have a cheap (pendo) 10in tablet with res of 1280x800..and the mini hdmi can pump out full HD 1080p..the hdmi out on the rigol is a bit lame...they probably want a licence to do 1080p! LOL edit2: is that blue shading on the panel blue blacklight? or is it actual shading on the panel?
