I saw him some years ago in London I was very impressed with this singing the close-up watching him acting on stage he over acts in fact is not acting the part but acting his idea of what an opera singer should do that is stock operatic gestures

My previous reply does not mean to disrespect the great talent bestowed in this, very different, but perhaps equally worthy Rigoletto, from La Scala. Frigerio and Squarciapino have been creating primordial theatrical fancy for what seems like ages... Bravi. Can't judge Deflo's work, not having seen the entire production. For sure he'll be miles above Zeffirelli, who in his Traviatas, seemed to care more about interpreting his own movie of the opera than the original score.

I see this production and I dont understan what is the deal with today productions with an eagerness to do "new things". What is the problem with traditional stage design and costumes? I think it looked very good to me on this video this traditional version of Rigoletto.

Why can't we have this production of Rigoletto at the Met in NY? Everything has been stripped down to a bare stage. The latest, La Traviata, with Violetta in a modern red dress, the ridiculous country scene with white sofas draped in floral printed covers and Violetta wearing a huge robe with the same printed motive. Totally ugly. Miss the Zeffirelli set badly.

Evidently opera is about the scenery for you! Decker's beautiful, minimal Traviata would've pleased maestro Verdi enormously, who wanted his opera to be no escapist fantasy, but rather to play in modern (in his day) dress, and with direct references to the world his audience inhabited at the time. Did you pay attention to the myriad subtleties of the staging, or were you too busy crying about the decadent, kitschy travesties that were the 2 consecutive Zeffirelli stagings the theatre presented?

circiter, are you in touch with the afterlife that you know what would please Verdi ENORMOUSLY? Verdi didn't want ALL his operas to play in contemporary dress, what escapist fantasy is this? Yours? Traviata is the exception, not the rule. Traviata was a "modern" opera set in the 1850's because Dumas' fils play is set in that period, it doesn't follow Verdi would have liked it in 21st C dress. He would have liked it in the period specified in the libretto, period, pun intended, as he would like all his other operas to be set in the time specified in their libretti. Rigoletto is set in the same period as Hugo's play, basta. There are pages, jesters, swords, spurs, stables, and cinquecento currency, and no street lights. You may want to see it the 21st C but don't attribute your wishes to Verdi, he, unlike yourself, knew the text and would cringe at the contradictions punching him in the face. What's really sad, is the fact that the La Scala management is as clueless as you. You'd think someone in charge of an opera house has a minimal knowledge of the libretto, but apparently not.
