80s songs are so easily picked out because of all the new ways that artists and bands found to use the synthesizer, that had first appeared in the late 70s. The 80s doesn't really have "a sound". It's just that there are so many cool and unusual sounds within the 80s.

To me saying that the "80's doesn't really have a sound" is like saying that pizza doesn't really have a taste, or that steampunk isn't really a look. It doesn't compute. Yeah, just like when the impressionists went a little crazy with all the new vibrant pigments and colors in their paints, the 80's went a little crazy with the synths. But sometimes you can't help but go overboard when something's new and shiny. Although it wasn't that new (the theme to Doctor Who was made with synthesizers, in 1964), but it was finally something you could buy at the store at a cost that was affordable in the 80's, verses you had to make your own machine that filled up a room and cost as much as a car.

Sorry but I beg to differ. The 80’s was full of one hit wonders, and pretenders that couldn’t have created a song without a synthesizer. Don’t misunderstand, there were many good songs, but no great bands! Unlike the 60’s and 70’s which had great bands, some still making music 50, 60 years later. The beats of the eighties are very disco, great dance music, but not so good for an NYC to LA road trip!!

So this song is actually a cover of the 60s Motown original by Gloria Jones--"The Queen of Northern Soul." Soft Cell were from Northern England and they did a couple songs that were nods to "Northern Soul" even though that was not their time or style of music. As part of that love of Motown they did an awesome cover of The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" which this song goes right into on the album and is a great double feature. Northern Soul was a style that developed in Northern England based on Motown one hit wonders, B side songs and obscure songs that they made their own. Gloria Jones became star in Norther England. They had and still have their own awesome dance style that looks like a cross between breakdancing, voguing and mod moves. Soft Cell uses footage from some of these dance offs in their vids. Very fun scene; cool, humble and unique. Try their cover of "Tainted Love."

Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” (1981) is a cover of a much different version by Gloria Jones. Soft Cell changed the key and the tempo, and they used synthesizers. Music was changing in the early ’80s, away from album-oriented rock and toward synth pop. Groups became known not for albums, but for single hits with a fun new sound, like this one. I recommend Berlin “The Metro,” The Cure “The Upstairs Room,” Talk Talk “Talk Talk,” and Missing Persons “Destination Unknown (TopPopVideo).”

OMG, this takes me back. One of the most quintessential 80s songs, and one of the first songs you think of when you hear the term "one-hit wonder". Marc Almond had such a great voice, and whenever I hear this song I feel like I'm back in middle school again! I can't really recommend any more of their songs (because I don't remember any), but if you want some more recommendations for late 70s/early 80s synthpop, please do "Cars" by Gary Numan, "I Ran (So Far Away)" by Flock of Seagulls, and "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode. (You need to do a Depeche Mode song at some point, but this is a great one to start with because it was their very first huge hit.)

This song came out when I was in Grade 7 in Toronto. I can tell you, it was a big deal. Instant cult jam status. You ought to listen to the extended version which has a long switch to "Baby, where did our love go?" by The Supremes. So they referenced a song in the original, too. It's all part of that chain of musical gifts. Maybe listen to the extended version and The Supremes sometime? :) Their other banger is "Sex Dwarf", kind of a demented disco electro track.

The House is Haunted, Melancholy Rose, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Ruby Red, Kitchen Sink Drama, Memorabilia, Traumas, Bedsitter, Stories of Johnny, and his duet with Jimmy Sommerville, of the Communards cover of Donna Summers I Feel Love all make my short list of faves. Marc Almond took the original Gloria Jones' Motown 'Tainted Love' and turned it into an iconic 80's sound. Gloria Jones' original was played in the underground Northern Soul scene in the 70's in the North of England and Marc, also coming from the North would've definitely heard this many times as he was and still is a huge fan of Northern soul. In fact Marc is featured in a 2014 documentary about the Northern soul scene, (Living for the Weekend) stating just that. Huge back history to the Northern Soul scene in the 70's, so briefly:- In the US before Motown became the huge label it became there were many black artists that never made the cut for the sound Motown needed for the mainstream audience so their recordings got lost or dumped into old record shops. Meanwhile back in the UK, Motown was trickling through into UK dance clubs and it went down a storm both in the South and North. The South of UK eventually progressed to Funk and Disco but the North wanted more Soul.(One DJ said that he tried to introduce Funk and Disco into the clubs in the North but they just threw bottles at him lol) Having dried up all the Motown sounds, DJ'S would fly to Detroit and scour the shops looking for that sound the North wanted. They would come back with crates of records from unknown artists that Motown had rejected and thrown out before they left Detroit for LA and these records kept the Northern Soul scene in the UK alive for many more years. Some of the unknown artists heard that their records were being played in UK and were shocked but obviously over the moon too and flew over to make guest appearances in the All-Nighters in the North. It's lovely to know that their dream of becoming a known artist came true, maybe not where they were expecting it to, but a dream come true all the same.
