To protect our country from flooding, we use both natural barriers (e.g., dunes) as well as built barriers (e.g., dams and storm surge barriers). Without these barriers, large parts of the Netherlands would flood. In this video we explain how we ensure our water safety. In particular, we show how our storm surge barriers work, which form our main protection against the North Sea.
Storm surge barriers are moveable flood barriers at river mouths, tidal inlets and estuaries which close, automatically or otherwise, when water levels are (extremely) high. Rijkswaterstaat manages and maintains five storm surge barriers: the Eastern Scheldt barrier (Oosterscheldekering), Maeslant Barrier, Dutch IJssel Barrier (Hollandsche IJsselkering), Hartel Barrier, Ramspol Barrier and Haringvliet Barrier. Storm surge barriers are necessary to protect our country from flooding. This animation shows how the barriers work.
