I was devastated and cried when Rik Mayall died. Drop Dead Fred was, and still is, 1 of my most favourite movies. My sister and I still watch it religiously and now our children watch it.

No one can ever replace Prick. He was a once in a lifetime phenomenon. The comedy world is a less manic place without him. 😢

and the funny thing is he wasnt the first choice to play Fred, Robin Williams was but turned it down but it was best as rik was great as fred. Also he was offered the chance to star in a sequel but refused.

Rik's very vulnerable in this interview, you could see he was worried about this and took it seriously. It sucks that critics lambasted him personally. "So I can be me...and hopefully not make a mistake..." 💔

I love this movie, especially the whole grown-up conflict of what it represents. Elizabeth has been taught to "grow up": to be modest and polite and not so outspoken. Fred is the spark of madness and fun that's still left inside her, trying to come out. In the end, when she goes inside her mind and actually frees her inner child and gives it validation, I think that's very powerful.

Still my favourite film of all time and I first saw this as a 7 year old. I am now 35. Not many things upset me but I was heartbroken when Rik Mayall passed.

I was a lot like a male version of Phoebe Cates' character in this movie, trying to figure it all out, dragging pieces of myself from childhood and assembling it into someone who can work, love, and remove the stumbling stones for those coming after me. I saw Rik Mayall as playing the role of a psychotherapist. This movie has two sides to it: a childish, silly, slapstick side and a serious, profound side. Phoebe Cates grows from an insecure, mentally-struggling young girl and emerges a confident, healthy young woman. I loved this movie. Like The Breakfast Club, it illustrates and demonstrates the therapeutic process of emotional growth. Rik Mayall and Phoebe Cates never got the credit they deserved for this excellent, now classic movie. Perhaps there is somewhat of a cult following for it now, but everyone involved in this movie deserved better.

it makes a lot of sense because I kind of see Elizabeth as kind of tomboyish and yet Fred is more of like a the kind of guy who wants her to actually be herself in a way.
