You have to really be a sad individual to bully people that are at the worst point of their lives. Not everyone in jail or prison is guilty. And a good number of inmates are savvier, more respectful and sturdier than a large portion of guards. One day you might bump into a guy you took advantage of in prison. Former C/O here, all 6 custody levels and including Death Row. My training is that, if 2 inmates are determined to fight, then all by myself I will have no hope to break them up. Wait for backup or until you see one of them looking around for escape or help, as an indication he realizes he can't win and he wants to stop, and so at this point I only have 1 to physically restrain. But the vast majority of the time where i worked i was fortunate to have shotgun coverage as a first resort to break up fights, and usually a warning shot sufficed. Corrections is a good career if you work in a state with sensible competent prison management. Avoid states with private prisons run by corporations.

Corrections Officer here... Everything Nick stated that he did is exactly what we're told not to do as CO's. You don't attempt to break up a fight between two inmates when you are by yourself. You give commands and call for additional resources. If they fight to the death right in front of you and back up has not arrived, then so be it. Your safety is paramount. If one inmate is fighting and the other is trying to escape the attack then it is your responsibility to attempt to apprehend the attacker. We have tools (taser, OC spray) to help accomplish this, in addition to defensive tactics we are trained on. Nick went against what we're trained to do. However, on the other hand, the two officers who stood by and watched may be held accountable to some extent but I'm sure there is more to that side of the story and those officers had their reasons on why they didn't immediately enter the housing unit to assist him. It appears to me that Nick has let the "cool CO" image from the inmates manipulate him to care a little too much for them and forget his training. I also gathered this opinion from his statements regarding the inmates requests of him engaging in sex with another coworker. That was cut and dry manipulation for blackmail purposes.. once you break the rules for an inmate, they own you. They are not your friends.

Usually probation is the time you have to prove your right for the job. Not making any mistakes, showing up on time, etc. after the probation period you get more leeway and have to mess up a few times to get warnings and write ups. Probation is the time they feel you and see how right you are for the job. Getting fired for no reason is illegal hence probation period and written warnings and write ups to document infractions.

Nick and I started the academy together. Real solid guy. His story hit home for me because I too have been a victim in several situations and it fell on deaths ears. That department is disgusting and I really hope Nick gets everything he’s asking for SOON! Sad how the inmates have more rights and are far more protected than the officers who keep the operation flowing. By far the worst thankless job/career to have.

Those two officers who just watched the fight and did nothing to help Nick should be in jail. The state has an obligation to protect all inmates while in their custody and also to protect the correctional officers while they are working.

Recovering County/City Corrections Officer here. My time as a corrections officer made me who I am today. It’s prepared me for shit days, let downs and getting screwed by staff that were supposed to be looking out for me. The only good thing I got out of it was time with the dept that carried over into another city job. This guy just wants his job back??? Most guys working in the can were waiting for their “lottery ticket” inmate altercation and go off on an industrial accident. Make this guy the head C/O.

Three years with corrections was enough for me. Inmates never bothered me. Fellow staff slept with inmates, did drugs with them, and were rats and snitches. Cops hated our guts because so many of us have been arrested.

Former NYS Corrections officer here... It was terrible and I don't recommend it to anyone. I went in at 22 years old (43 now) and there was a lot of people who were in their 40's that went to the academy. A officer I worked with in the state max was a former Rikers island officer 15 years. He was one of the toughest SOB I knew and nobody including inmates would fuck with him. He said he burned some brain cells working there and glad he came over to the state. There is so much that goes on in these prisons that the public will never know.. I get asked all the time and the shit I've seen and been through will blow your mind. People can't believe it but it's true. Seen a lot crap happen to a lot of officers trying to to do their job.. at end of the day.. you can't anymore.. just a free for all. It's not like it was back in the day say the 80's, 90's per the guys I have worked with. I understand what he is saying and it hope it works out.

I think having female counselors at men's prisons is a good thing. They have a different energy and some men are easier to get through to if you're a woman. As far as officers no way.

Rikers is brutal - had a friend who worked for me as an engineer but quit to become a bull at rikers - warned him how dangerous it was and he wound up getting knocked out from an inmate while transporting younger inmates - he got a concussion and messed up his back and it pained me to tell him “I warned you”

With all respect to Mr. Goichai, this is a textbook case of why you should save for retirement in an IRA etc and not take a job for a pension. Pensions provide retirement income but are not wealth that you can control on your own. It’s best to be self reliant. Wishing him the best in resolving his case.
@mark83373 ай бұрын
Problem though is many people will not voluntarily do that and contribute. Whether not up to speed, lazy, undisciplined, whatever, many people don’t take the initiative or lack the discipline to save and invest out of their own paychecks on a consistent basis. Now, if the IRA or 401(k) was mandatory unless opt out then more would.
@flaherone60273 ай бұрын
Typically you have a 401k type as well as a pension in civil service.

I have a very similar story of working for a city and getting fired after coming back from a workman’s comp injury and surgery. I was fired after being off work for 5 months which I hit physically therapy hard and came back 3-5 months earlier than was planned after the shoulder surgery. Wasn’t allowed to come until I was 100%. They said they was no light duty work and I was only back three weeks and gone. It never felt right after returning to work and that’s why. The town was kinda small with 25 thousand population

RIKERS IS NOT IN THE BRONX Mark, It is located in East Elmhurst, Which is right outside of Queens
@antonvonmanheim46533 ай бұрын
It’s in the Bronx. All crimes/incidents go through the Bronx courts because it’s part of Bronx County. (NYPD hates it because it adds to crime statistics in the Bronx - really should have their index on crime statistics). The odd thing is, is that the only way on to the island is through Queens.
@Dimar6723 ай бұрын
@@antonvonmanheim4653 you can go from all the borough detention centers, VCBC, "the boat" which is basically a boat on the opposite side of Rikers island, on the Bronx side

Yes. But technically they consider it part of the Bronx. The bridge to Rikers , the entrance is on HazenSt. In East Elmhurst however the island itself is part of Bronx for whatever reason. Its right near LaGuardia Airport @busterbiloxi3833

@@antonvonmanheim4653wrong. All jail cases go to Bronx court. Not every single criminal case.The boat is in bx and rikers is in elmhurst queens.
