In my youth I was an out-of-control idiot criminal (basically just a casualty of the War on Drugs) and managed to earn myself numerous visits to west coast jails and prisons. Then I moved to NYC (Astoria, Queens, near the bridge to Riker's, coincidentally) but hearing stories about Riker's from my brother-in-law who spent time there on a regular basis cured me of my criminal tendencies, thank God.

Lol same here except the opposite, never been to rikers just a few county jails in Upstate NY n a 6yr stretch in NY state prison where roughly 80% of inmates came out of the city and through Rikers. Not saying NYS DOCS is a non stop good time but it has its moments and it's more of what you make it you want fighting and violence you can have all you want ýou wanna kick back read a book and mind your business you can do that too. I currently live in Arizona on the border of San Bernardino County CA n one of the 1st people I hung with was a guy from work that was a skinhead and product of the CA prison system n stories I got from him made me want no part of CA or AZ prison system

You should tell the story of Canada's most feared and infamous jail: Toronto's Old Don Jail which operated for 140 years before being shut down in the 1990's. The jail was the site of a majority of the hangings carried out in canada and became locally famous for the large marble carving of father time with the words: "lose all hope ye who enter here" which hung over the inmate entrance. After the "old wing" was shut down in the early 80's many movies were filmed there including the 1990 Tom cruise hit Cocktail which was filmed in the main reception area of the old wing which was 2 floors below the old death row and gallows.

The prisons offer all the modern amenities with the latest accommodations and even access to PlayStation 3s while being in a much calmer and safer atmosphere in order to properly "reform". They also feature some of the lowest recidivism rates in the world, but remember rooms are only available at a first come first serve basis so what are you waiting for?

18:10 Bill DeBlasio is not the mayor of New York City currently, Eric Adams took office in January 2022, so those policies may change Secondly, you reference New York’s “dwindling crime rate” but New York has an increasing crime rate, it’s been increasing the last few years and overall crime is up 60% this year so far. It’s arguably one of the reasons Adams was elected (he’s a former NYPD officer) campaigning on a balanced criminal justice reform system. Rikers should be closed, but there were several errors at the end which kind of give a false view of the current situation in NYC.

One of my exes was sent there with a toothache. They wouldn't do anything gor it. For a week he was writhing in pain from this damn tooth. After he finally got moved on he got the tooth removed. But the pain from that tooth is pretty much all he remembers of his time there.

@@thentil People awaiting trial get sent there as well. This includes innocent people who can’t afford private attorneys. Keep in mind that not everyone in jail is guilty, and even those who are should (usually) be treated humanely. (People who fuck with kids can rot and be tortured for all I care.) If the punishment for stealing a candy car was losing your hand, would you say, “Well, shouldn’t have stolen that candy car,” or would you be sane and calling for such overly severe punishment to be abolished? And do you want punishment (keep in mind most of those in jails and other facilities for several years OR LESS), which hardens people, or do you want them rehabilitated so that, when they get out, they’re less likely to reoffend?

This barely scratches the surface on the chaos and corruption that is Riker Island. There are entire zones of the jail system that guards don’t enter because the inmates broke out and formed gangs. The “bullpens” are all well over capacity, with inmates sleeping shoulder to shoulder like slaves on trade ships. All this is covered in an article from the New York Times, which added that a recent incident where a bus was stolen and driven into a gate to break it open was a typical incident for a day on the island.

@@GrievousReborn Defunding the police isn’t about getting rid of police. You heard Simon mention the rate of 40% for inmates with mental health issues? Defunding the police means taking funds given to police to beat those people and to instead use that money to fund people trained to deal with mental illness. The police shouldn’t get money to deal with people they shouldn’t be dealing with in the first place, yet necessary vital services aren’t getting funded because the police keep getting it all.

This script is admittedly dated! Though the dwidling crime rate also has to do with certain crimes that are no longer considered crimes- such as marijuana possession. Additionally, the reactions to many petty crimes no longer include detainment while awaiting trial. You are not incorrect, just thought I would clarify!

Due primarily to mental illness, I got chewed up by the legal system and spent my 20s in and out of jails and prisons. Other than psychological pain involved, the hardest thing was always asshole psychopath guards. Drunk with power and driven by their own mental problems. Prisons don't attract the best people to work there. Not saying that there isn't good people who work in corrections. But there are a lot of sadistic scumbags that should be inmates themselves. I'm 40 now and still trying to fix all the damage brought on by a broken and biased system that most people don't care to see fixed. They broke the law, after all.

It’s insane that basically everyone knows what you’ve described is pretty spot-on and yet it keeps happening like it’s not something that needs to be addressed and ideally reorganized altogether but at the end of the day most people don’t really care enough. Stay positive and remember that you’re a lot tougher than you might often think

To be honest, this isn't even the worst american jail I've ever heard of. When my brother was incarcerated, one of the jails he was kept at was made out of an old cargo ship. He compared it to a dungeon. There was no electric light, no climate control, no recreation, not even any corrections officers. Just concrete and metal and a tiny cell for him and dozens of other inmates. If there was an emergency, they had an intercom that they could use to call someone from a nearby facility. As for nourishment, they were fed beans twice a day. Some of the jails in the US have absolutely appallingly illegal conditions.

As to what to do with trash is an ever present - inexorable question. The destination and treatment of garbage is NOT to be relegated or delegated to waste disposal services alone and then simply forgotten about. The public DOESN'T AND DOESN'T WANT TO participate in any way with the 'dispensation' of their garbage. BUT ! - I am really afraid that all of us will eventually be FORCED. Just why is it that truly communal problems, - instead of being relegated to, the responsibility of, and the solution provided by, - the community - it's always the State who always ends up doing the entire job. And beurocracy But the real solution to waste (not the temporary tossing about the respon- sibility) CANNOT BE the responsibility or the job of the resident trash-collecter ALONE. Without the attitude, the participation, and the involvement, the work, and the conscientiousness of the ENTIRE community, - the whole problem of all of our garbage CANNOT AND SIMPLY WILL-NOT EVER BE SOLVED OR EVEN EVER WILL BE SOLUABLE.
