Once again make up ON POINT. I also love the concept of this video. I think it allows us to see what you like but makes us think about how we pick books and why, and also just the results were very interesting. Thanks for the video and for keeping things so interesting and fun in your channel.

I completely agree that unreliable narrators are tricky for me. I HATE when the twist ending is "surprise, the MC is actually cRAzY and it was all in their head the whole timeee!" But, I really enjoy the degradation of the narrator's mind to the point where they become unreliable. If you've read Kill Creek there's this point where a character is describing what makes a gothic horror gothic and one of the proposed criteria is a sense of decay emanating from a central setting, either physical decay of something or mental decay of the character. And that's what I like. I like when there's some sort of outside, sinister, possibly paranormal force that takes a relatively balanced and reliable narrator and breaks them down until you start questioning them or you are yelling at them asking them WHY they are doing that. It's interesting to watch how the evil force drags the narrator down into madness. It's not interesting for the author to use mental illness as a cheap plot device. Some examples of books that I think did this well (skip if you think even knowing this trope/theme is present is a spoiler): . . . Kill Creek And the Trees Crept In The Haunting of Hill House The Shining The Only Good Indians The House of Leaves The Tell-Tale Heart

I'm glad you loved The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, it's such a good and underrated series. I read the last book not long before watching Enola Holmes and retroactively fancasted Henry Cavill's Sherlock as the Sherlock of the series. The Wilder Girls cover always reminds me of Sawkill Girls, I used to confuse them because the title is also similar.

Love this video. You are right, Marketing is everything! I noticed the first few books you showed all had lots of green in the cover also those illustrated romance covers are not my favorite because they all just look so similar and when I see them immediately think “ oh, I read this already”

I was so nervous when you mentioned both Mount Char and the Alchemists Daughter because both are all time faves of my mine and I was like oh no... what if it goes wrong but so glad you enjoyed them. Definitely continue the Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club series, I loved the second book and what they did with a certain well known Sherlock Holmes character and reversed the Baker Street boys trope to training up young girls 😊 I also just read both books by Rory Power and gave Wilder Girls five stars so I’m going to have pick up Horrid! Also the library of the unwritten and a Curious Beginning so thanks for the reverse recs 😊

Also I had anger problems when o was little bit I never got counselling I just read Jekyll for the first time and cause I heard you mention a daughter I was low key waiting for a daughter to prop up lol, but I really like that idea of the alchemists daughter! I loved this! What a great idea! I can actually say I've tried this (somewhat unintentionally lol). And it worked for me too! Red, White & Royal Blue is one of my all time favorite books. And the cover for Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall reminded me of it so much. Not just because they're both illustrated romance covers, there was just a vibe. And I loved Boyfriend Material so much! Which, by the way, is an own voices male/male contemporary romance! I know you've said before you're wary of male/male written by women sometimes, so I feel the need to point out that Alexis Hall is a man because Alexis is more of a feminine name in the US! I had originally assumed the author was a woman.

What I got from this video is something not book related at all. I need to finally watch Enola Holmes lol, so I know what people are talking about. Also "fourth wall breaking" is becoming a trend. First Fleabag, then Gentleman Jack, now Enola Holmes (two of these are historicals.) It starts to feel like a tool of modernizing in case of historical stuff specifically. Like here are all the things that were morally wrong back then but we're going to make a commentary on them through our protagonist, so you know we don't uphold them.

Kasie West books don't have covers like that, and that includes the mroe recent ones, and neither does The Law of Tall Girls, which I'm reading now. It is like that for Once Upon a Con, yes, but those books are also inspired by fairy tales/or popular literature such as Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper, even though they're compteroray YA romance. I will say otherthan the Once Upon a Con thing, those covers aren't alluring at all. Plus I have a book ehre that DOES hav ea cover like that, called A Totally Awkard Love Story, and it is a hundred percent NOT for me, even though I am drawn to YA contemporary romance. So I have reason to believe that these other books with covers like that could be the kind that should be avoided.

I really hate when people say they have a 'migraine' when you clearly don't. I suffer with really severe migraines and you wouldn't be able to even sit there and talk if you had one. Riley please be mindful about using terms like that when you probably just have a headache!

I am diagnosed with chronic migraines for 10 years. I know what it is. I was coming off a migraine in that clip so I looked better but trust me I know how bad they are. In the future, try not to judge or diagnose someone you don’t know anything about please
@TrishaBarua29134 жыл бұрын
I've had migraines since I was 10 and sometimes it goes away in a few hours but sometimes it lasts for days. A migraine is a migraine. The degree of pain can differ but you can't negate someone's condition based on YOUR experiences.
