This is my very favorite Waylon Jennings session from August 7, 1984, appearing on a superb DVD by New West Records from 2004 in my possession. As an example here I like to share with you the encore performance of JW's own "I've Always Been Crazy". Enjoy!
I fully agree with the review by Mark Deming in AllMusic about this DVD:
Once upon a time, Waylon Jennings was one of the hardest partying men in country music (no small statement), but by the time he appeared on PBS's long-running music series Austin City Limits in 1984, Jennings asked that his taping take place at 11 a.m., which would have been closer to his bedtime during his years as country's number one outlaw. A newly cocaine-fee Waylon plays "I Can Get off on You" early in this set, which contains his complete set from that KLRU-TV taping, and the man sounds tough and committed throughout a fast-paced show, during which he runs through 14 songs in less than 40 minutes and displays his trademark ability to sound energetic and laid-back at the same time. Waylon was always an artist of glorious contradictions, and a number of them are clearly audible on Live from Austin TX; for a man who looked, sounded, and lived like a badass, he was always at his best wearing his heart on his sleeve on broken-hearted numbers like "It's Not Supposed to Be That Way" and "Dreaming My Dream with You," and while he was famous for his rowdy, hard-living ways, he was perfectly comfortable singing "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got out of Hand" against type. Jennings wastes no time in this show, but the spirit is with him at all times, and both his voice and his lead guitar work shine, while his band (including the great Ralph Mooney on pedal steel) is in superb form. And Jennings sings Rodney Crowell's "Ain't Living Long Like This" as if he owns it. Live from Austin TX captures what was probably just another set in the life of Waylon Jennings, but the subtle fire and total commitment he brings to these songs prove the man never dogged it in front of an audience, and anyone who ever enjoyed his rough, sweet music will get a kick out of this.

He started out with his pal Buddy Holly, and his kindness to the Big Bopper spared his life, he later found a new brother in Willie, and two more in Johnny and Kris, and together those four became the most famous Highwaymen since the James gang. He found a lasting love in Jessi, and earned immorality in the hearts of all who love country music. He is now playing gigs in Heaven with his idol Hank Williams and his buddies Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash, but not long from now the Highwaymen will reunite for one helluva of a reunion show. Until that day when we will be able to see him, and buds perform, we have the music he left us, and I will take it any day. Rest well Hoss.

We had the pleasure of seeing what may well have been one of the most influential groups of country legends of this or any century when we enjoyed Waylon, Willie, Tompall & of course one of Country Music's most beautiful ladies ever, Jessie Coulter (or Mrs. Waylon, whichever you prefer). It was at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton Virginia and they were amazing. I'll never forget that when the show ended and the lights came up, the smoke was so thick it was like a thick fog in there. (And just so we're clear, very little of it was cigarette smoke (if you know what I mean...lol)

Linda Bollinger one of the things most people either don’t realize or forget about him was how he came up in the music industry. He started back when people went to a show to be entertained and he learned from some of the best there was.

My favourite singer and guitar player ever... a unique sound. When you heard it, you knew it was Waylon. I listen to him everyday. Fell in love about 45 years ago and then in the 70's, I discovered him again in a different way. It will be for life because there are no other like him so far.

As a Limey at 19 I was introduced to country music driving to small towns across Alberta Canada for several years from 1974 to 1980. Once you left the city all you could get was small town radio stations. I latched on pretty darn quick. I listened to all the greats but my all time favorite was and still is Faster Horses, Younger woman yes haw.
