As an American sailor, I really appreciate all the nations' ships who followed the tradition of "manning the rails" when entering Pearl. Thank you all, and fair winds and following seas. To those who don't know, the battleship USS Arizona was sunk in 1941 while tied up in battleship row on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. When she went down, thousands of her crew died with her and are entombed within her hull to this day. As a sign of enduring respect, US warships who enter Pearl station off-duty crewmen in dress uniforms along the exterior walkways.

Thank you for mentioning other countries ships! Yes, ships from most countries man the rails when entering Pearl Harbor and hand salute USS Arizona, the men entombed in her and the memorial built above her. I was on a couple of guided missile destroyers in the 70's homeported at Pearl Harbor. Slight correction though, thousands of her crew did not die with her. 1,177 were lost on USS Arizona on December 7, 1941.

@@cxzact9204 The reason for this transit-route was, to take part on the NYC ship-parade and also visiting the Norfolk-USN Base. (Norfolk is the partner town of Wilhelmshaven). On the transit back both ship will went the route via Suez-Channel.

I’m a big fan of Japan. I was stationed on Oahu from 1977-1979 in the Army and was a helicopter mechanic. Our hangar was on Wheeler AFB. Our hangar still was riddled with bullet holes in the steel beams and block walls and the concrete tarmac had concrete patches from bomb craters all from the Pearl Harbor attack 36 years earlier. I’ve visited the Arizona Memorial twice. It’s a sacred and solemn place. It’s surreal to see a Japanese Navy ship in Pearl Harbor. Mind blowing.

This exercise represents all the Allies of the Pacific. There is also NATO in the Atlantic. All told there are a lot of Allies to defend against the likes of Russia and China in two different theaters. When I was in the USN stationed on the west coast, RIMPAC was my favorite joint exercise, and I participated in two.

I participated in 2 RIMPAC Exercises when I was active duty USN, and it was always an eerie feeling for me to see the Japanese Rising Sun Flag flying inside the Port. I find it disheartening that many International Navies do not both have a summer dress uniform to wear and also some Nation's Navies did not "Man-The Rails" while entering Pearl Harbor which is a major sign of respect. And I should also chastise the U.S. Navy ships that did not do the same. I remember when my ship entered both Pearl & Sydney Harbors and we all had to be spick & span for it, dress uniform whites and it was a major evolution onboard my ship. Fortunately, my ship played on both Orange & Blue sides during the 2 RIMPACS I was involved in, and we got more training from playing both the aggressor & defender sides.
