I'm a US Navy veteran from '78-'83, VAQ-138, VT-22 Powerplants mech. 3 Med, Med/IO deployments aboard JFK and IKE. It's really great to see the cooperative exercises with all these different countries and NATO allies. We did a bunch of this stuff in the Med back in the day, but never to this big a scale. I'm happy to see our young sailors and officers engaged in this sort of practice in these days of cutbacks. The global threats have seemed to gotten bigger since the Russians sort of left the scene with all that is going on and the recent huge increase in the Chinese Naval presence. We need to be ready.

That is the former USS Dubuque LPD-8, my ship from 81-84. Sad to see her Go, but curiously you see her shrugging off 30 mm, 105 mm, and Hellfire missiles however I have YET to see the B-2 Bomber footage that supposedly finally put her down with a Quicksink bomb. RIP DBQ, you gave us 40+ yrs

There's different kinds of formations. The one you're probably thinking of is a CSG (Carrier Strike Group), where the center point would be the Carrier. I don't think there's really a known formation of this size. Also, the disparity of ships would make it weird since every year is different!

The main attack method these days is missiles, so I don't think it's a problem to be in the front. The number of torpedoes has also decreased considerably.
