One suspects orchestras especially enjoy performing this work since it's fanciful & loaded with great solos for almost every principal. Loved it as a kid & still at 63.

Ah the grand Russians! Seems like Rimsky Korsakov was usually in Tchaikovsky’s shadow, but in this instance he produced one of music’s great compositions. Despite this beautiful performance, I personally prefer Maestro Valery Gergiev’s more energetic and slightly faster approach in at least one version that’s also posted here on KZbin. That said, your salute to the orchestra members attire should not be cast askance. In these visual performances the appearance of the performers seems as wonderful as the music they produce. Every member is immaculately dressed and groomed to near perfection. What a wonderful tribute to the composer, conductor, audience and even to their own talents. Seems like fine musicians and professional golfers are the only humans remaining who exhibit such class.

Good God! Very organic and consistent performance. Dynamics very well controlled and tempos are well chosen, more convincing then Reiner's and Ansermet's. Incidentally, this recording quality is very very outstanding, preserving freq response down to the bass drum strikes of at least 45 Hz. Play this with yr big speakers.
