I don't think it's a rectangular hyperbola since it looks like when it's near freezing the graph isn't parallel to that axis. I don't know what the fact that it's a curve means. Maybe it's something to do with the molecules or the bonds between them, but looking online I couldn't find any insight. And thanks! Glad you're still enjoying the videos.

According to the graph, cold water won't boil sooner than room temp water. Cold water will have a faster heat transfer rate while it is still cold, but once the cold water reaches room temp, the heat transfer rate will be the rate it should be for room temp water. So once the cold water reaches room temp it will take the same time from then on as room temp water does.

This week's video is an electronics one all about using thermistors, what they are and how use them to measure and control temperature. I especially had fun doing the simple circuit where I heat up the thermistor with a hair dryer until that causes the fan to turn on. And then the fan cools off the thermistor, causing the fan to turn off!

The only way I know to do that is create moving positive ions. It'd be atoms that are ions with positive protons and neutral neutrons in the nucleus and negative electrons surrounding the nucleus but there would be less electrons than protons, and so they'd be positively charged. In fact, I've done it in my "How to Make/Build a Lifter or Ionocraft" video. The positive wire electrode strips electrons from atoms in the air to create positive ions, which flow down to the negatively charged foil.

This sensor is for attaching to the cooling system in a particular model of car, so you'd have to make your own mounting system. To turn on a fan below 100C you can do what I did in the video. But it probably won't turn on at 100C. For that you'd need to add a resistor so that the total resistance adds up to something that would result in the right current for the fan. You also have to consider what temperature the fan should turn off at. Search google for "pexsupply snap disc" for a better way.

That was fun :) Just grabbed what I thought to be one off an old PC power supply and had a little look. Green disc 'SCK 2R55A'. Thought may as well try it. Only 2.7ohms at 80F room temp. Held in hand it went to 2.5ohms, in front of a small fan, up to 3.3 ohms. At 10x those figures it would be similar to your automotive one...did a search and it is one, but nothing like as variable as that one you show. Still, I now know something more about them, cheers.

No need to do the setup with common resistor. I just connected a 1 kohm, 2 watt resistor to my meter and put the same hair drier on it for 1 minute, twice as long as I did in the video, and the resistance increased by only 8 ohms. Common resistors aren't affected by temp. as much as thermistors. The VARIAC is a 3 amp, 240VAC one which I bought off-the-shelf. I'd recommend higher amperage for more usefulness. Maybe salvage from old power supplies but usually buy second hand since they're costly.

It isn't a capacitor symbol, though I can see the resemblance. It's supposed to be like two walls facing each other. When they're close together they restrict the flow of electrons i.e. high resistance. When they're farther apart they allow more flow i.e. low resistance. Oh well.

Found a great one just now. Take a look for small green bulb type devices attached to back of large heatsinks. Got one from another PC power supply, it was 7.3K at rest in approx 80F. Blew on it for 30 seconds and it went to over 8K, warmed it between fingers and it went down to 6.5K. Can only imagine fridge and sun values...pretty good temp sensor for free, once calibrated. Perhaps to keep an unpowered eye on transistors or other circuits, or part of indoors/outdoors actual temp sensor :)

Thank you for making this video. A small question is how to know if a thermistor is malfunctioning? In my car A/C, the compressor cycles soo much and especially in cold weather. When I jumped the connection; it stayed ON. It is trying to control the temperature to 4 degC but it seems too sensitive. Is thermistor can go bad or is it a design flaw in the circuit? thank you for your video.
@RimstarOrg2 жыл бұрын
I guess you'd have to isolate the thermistor from the rest of the circuit and then create a setup like I have in the video. Then set up a test circuit like I do in the video and see if it works. Or if you can't remove it enough from the circuit then try heating it with a hair drier.

+iADT I don't know. There's no data on the box that it came in and I wasn't able to find a datasheet for it online when I looked before. Maybe you'll have better luck. It's a BWD part and the part numbers on the box are 020-7913-8 and WT691. It's normally used for car engine systems somewhere. But if you have a non-automotive thermistor, one that isn't in the brass casing like mine, then you can probably look up some numbers online.

Does the thermistor have a maximum current limit to it ? How much current can it handle before it breaksdown ?.
@RimstarOrg8 жыл бұрын
+Tasty Fish Mine didn't have anything written on it, probably because it's an automotive sensor intended for certain cars. Looking at some datasheets doesn't help much either. From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermistor "If the current is large enough to generate more heat than the device can lose to its surroundings, the device heats up, causing its resistance to increase. This creates a self-reinforcing effect that drives the resistance upwards, therefore limiting the current." So it sounds like the answer is no.

I would like to find the right thermistor that it would turn on the fan around 150-175F. which model thermistor should i use do you think?
@RimstarOrg11 жыл бұрын
I couldn't find any data on the M35. The 5D-11 has the temperature range.

So it could be thw right option. Let me give it a shot and i will post my experience. Thank you so much.

Does it matter what value of resistance I choose, some are 1k ohm, 2kohm up to 10kohm. So if the resistance values goes up and down, does it matter what value its

i need to measure the temperature of hat water inside the tube. i can make the hole for set up this thermister but m not getting how to put it. the water will be in contact with both wires. ????? can u answer ??
@RimstarOrg10 жыл бұрын
kunwer singh Just make sure the water isn't in electrical contact with both wires by insulating the wires. To insulate the wires you can use heat shrink tubing, or liquid electrical tape, or anything else you can think of that would prevent the metal of the wires from getting wet.
@kunwersingh289310 жыл бұрын
RimstarOrg I forgot to tell you tat my planing to use it in heat exchanger which am designing. actually am thinking both of RTD and Thermister . Ican make its wire insulated but takes more time. I better use RTD .

Thanks! I don't think there's much to it... just connections to two sides of a piece of ceramic or polymer material. It's nothing crazy :-(. I'll have to come up with something else for you that's crazy. :)

My Whirlpool gas dryer isn't getting hot enough and the clothes never get dry, the gas flame works, it's just shutting the heat off too soon, so I bought what is called a thermistor in a sealed plastic case that screws onto the exiting chamber after the blower. This did not solve the problem. When I remove the thermistor as to not allow it to sense any warm temperature and left it plugged in the flame stays on endlessly. At first I assumed that even though the encased thermistor was new in the package that it might be defective straight from the manufacturer, but now that I see this video there are a few of these disc-like thermistors attached inside the dryers wiring harness, they are not seemingly positioned in any specific spot as if to sense temperature, but just part of the wiring, I always thought these were perhaps some sort of resistor, but instead they are identical to what you call a thermistor. When I was at a dead end on what to do next then this video helped me to decide that the next thing I should try is to replace the short harness sections that contain these thermistors. Thanks for making this video.

I want to build a circuit to trigger a buzzer if the temperature in my fridge gets too high. I lost a bunch of groceries after an electrical snafu in my home and wanted to prevent that from happening again. Do you have any other videos which might help me understand how to design a battery supply which only began to feed power to something should another power source fail? I suppose I just want to learn how to design a portable back up battery. Portable as in I can easily carry it from one place to another and portable as in it could be easily adjusted for use with most DC supplied electronics.

Hi Thank you for your great help. I have a dishwasher thermistor on which T120K carved. I do not know how to find resistance vs temperature. Would you please help me?
@RimstarOrg5 жыл бұрын
Hi You can use the technique I show in this video. Alternatively, you'd need a part number for it and then to search online for that part number and hope you can find a specification sheet with a resistance vs temperature chart.

If you're going to use a thermistor to control more than small power then use it to control a power transistor (a FET or Darlington) that the power flows through.

@RimstarOrg9 жыл бұрын
+Jonathon Shafer You could use a circuit with a thermistor, that's in the right range. Or you could try looking for a snap disk (rimstar.org/equip/temp_control_circuit.htm), though those temperatures are a little low for that.
@orionarts84789 жыл бұрын
+RimstarOrg it is to regulate water temperature inside a large tank for fish...if that helps with ideas. I want to recycle the water from an underground collection tank also using the home hot water to balance temperatures.

how do you set a threshold for example when the thermistor reaches a certain amount of temperature the fan gets turn on....thank you?
@RimstarOrg6 жыл бұрын
That's up to the thermistor. When you shop around for one, you look at the specifications to see what temperatures it works with.
