Being a photojournalist rather than artist by inclination and training I’ve always preferred the natural model of a single sun as key or backlight and with skylight acting as fill and key light. I apprenticed and assisted with Monte Zucker from 1972-74 who took all his wedding and other portraits by the light of a north facing window with reflector forward of the face for fill and re-enacted ceremony action with carefully placed off camera flash with a identical flash on a bracket over lens and eye line of subjects for fill producing rich toned, full-detailed color prints. Outdoors in sun it was used as backlight, the faces posed into the northern skylight as by the north facing window to get a subtle mask of highlights on the front of the face then adding the same center fill on the camera and matching the placement and angle and lighting pattern of the off camera flash to the “key” component of the skylight blending them as seamlessly as possible, just adding the flash to overcome the dynamic range limitations of the recording / output medium. Ring lights have their origin in medical and dental photography where the goal was flat shadowless lighting, often in body cavities while keeping the camera equipment covered in sterile wraps. Macro photographers started to use them and two flashes crossed at 45° and that became the norm for the look of most macro photography. It’s not bad lighting since it reveals the subject very effectively, but it’s not natural. My inspiration and mentor for Macro photographer named Harry Yen a part-time photographer for Monte whose day job was making color prints for displays at National Geographic. Regardless of the size of the subject he used a traditional three light fill/key/rimlight lighting strategy often bringing the subject into his basement studio. Out in the field he would use mirrors to bounce backlight back into the front of subject and bring black mat board and pastel chalk to create non-distracting backgrounds for his macro subjects. His work was so outstanding that in the editors of the National Geographic ran a six page feature with his photos. My next job after Monte was also working at NGS in the Photomechanical Lab 😊 Since learned Monte’s Key over Centered Fill speedlight technique most of my flash photos in the 50 years since have been taken that way, since 2000 digitally with my Fill mounted on the same Stroboframe camera-flip bracket which keeps it centered above the lens in landscape and portrait mode so there is no change in the lighting when camera is flipped. I’ve also done a lot of experimenting with on flash diffusers and came up with this which bounces flash forward or splits it between forward and ceiling bounce when that the better option photo.nova.org/DIY01/ For macro shooting I devised this diffuser for the on camera flash: photo.nova.org/MacroDiffuser/ which works well by itself or with an off camera flash as rim lighting for more natural lighting. Again that’s just my preference and something I did to avoid the cost of buying a ring flash 💸 😊
