Today, I'm going to show you guys how to install multiple Ring stickup cams using the PoE or power over ethernet connection. I'll be using a PoE injector switch that only has 1 uplink port to connect to your router and 8 available ports for your Ring stick up cams or any brand of cameras that can be connected with PoE.
We will then test and compare the Stickup cam's video quality day and night, 2 way audio and also camera opening speed to live view and see if there are any differences when compared to a camera that is connected via WiFi.

Hey LifeHackster, great video. I just purchased this camera from ring. Since I have 2 other ring wifi cameras, I was hoping to simplify using one app on my Iphone. Little did I know the issues this camera would take. I had a wifi camera outdoors, that was pushing the limit of the wifi signal strength, so I figured a PoE connecting via an ethernet, would be the way to go. It seems Ring help force is unfamiliar with setting up a PoE camera and it has been one problem after another. They indicated just hook up the camera to power source then run ethernet from router to camera, and of course that doesn't get it. Your video on how this works is most helpful. Now I understand I need more than a common switcher off the router, but a PoE switcher to power the camera via the ethernet cabling. Something the Ring Help desk doesn't seem to understand either. Thanks to your informative video, once I get this working, I may look at a better camera system, using the PoE setup.

If you will be running PoE or ethernet cable outside, check out NVR systems. They will have better video quality up to 4K and can record 24/7. They are just not reliable in motion notification...Ring still is pretty good in accurate motion detection.

One thing I would add is instead of using bulb grease, you can use silicone sealant around the exterior RJ45 connection. It's easy to apply and to peel off and provides waterproofing. Around plastic piece where the cat6 cable inserts into, you can put silicone tape over the hole to further waterproof it and to prevent bugs from making a home in there.

Thanks for your review. Ring is not there yet, the worst part is there camera design does not protect the cable. I'd rather have poe cameras where the cable is protected through the camera body. I wired our previous house for ethernet and rg6 for cable / satellite. Since I am retired, I will probably spend some time in the attic to get my dvr cameras up and running. RG6 is probably a good idea as well, I might as well do it all at once!

IMO, if you have an area of your house with poor or spotty wifi signal and want a camera, get a nice POE cam with built in SD card storage so you don't have to have an NVR box. I have a couple Hikvision DS-2CD2385FWD-I and their 4k 8mp cameras are not only much cheaper than the stick up cams, the image quality is on a totally different level.
@moialder252
@moialder252 5 жыл бұрын
yup EXACTLY. if you are going to run poe setup and run the wires, then get out of Ring's crappy hardware. They will only use cloud because thats how they make money on the fees people pay. It's almost a waste of time and effort to run the cat wiring then in the end use it for a Ring product lol
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 5 жыл бұрын
@@moialder252 The only counter argument to that I would say is that Ring's software is well put together and everything "just works" (in my experience at least). There's a lot under the hood you have to tinker with on the higher end cams as well as setting up port forwarding in your firewall. Some of my hikvision cams can't stream the full resolution feed even on the local LAN, h265 breaks internet explorer's live view so I have to use h264. Since I bought gray market versions of a couple of them I can't upgrade the firmware for fear of bricking or reverting back to Chinese, the hikvision app is atrocious, etc. There are equivalent quality POE cams out there but my hikvision NVR kinda keeps me tied to their cameras and I don't need a ton of them so I haven't bothered looking into other brands other than the Wyze cams inside my home. I see that 3 dollars a month for Ring as a convenience fee and you get an easy to use app out of it and in the highly unlikely scenario that I have a break in and they manage to find and steal my NVR, thus removing all footage, the streaming footage with Nest isn't really steal-able so there ARE some perks to their services. My main gripe with the Ring doorbell pro cam I have is that the image quality is significantly worse than my 1080p hikvision. It's genuinely terrible but *just* good enough to serve it's purpose.

The Wasserstein PoE Switch you listed and used, states it puts out 96w across the 8 ports; that comes out to only 12 watts per port. I spoke with Ring customer support yesterday about the watts needed/required by the Stickup Cam to run POE; in short, the representative could not find the answer in her system, it wasn't listed, but deduced it needed 15.4 watts, since the "Ring POE Injector" sold by Ring, puts out 15.4 watts. Do you think possibly your test results would have been better with a full 15.4 watts going to the camera? If you get the time, could you test this observation and see if it makes a difference?

Since these cams use a 5.2V DC input voltage, and the included power supply puts out 1000 mA, that equates to around 5W per camera, well within the capabilities of that switch. Just my opinion.

Life hackster. I have a question. I’ve been using Arlo cams for 4 years now and love them but don’t love swapping batteries. I used to have Poe cams and they weren’t that good and changed them for Arlo. One issue with Arlo on iOS is they don’t have configurable alerts on iPhone. So when a person crosses your cam the sound is the same as a text message or general alert. Very strange they didn’t give the option on it for a different more noticeable sound. So the question is on an iPhone the alert that happens when your cam is tripped can it be changed for different sounds. I see this very often in iOS with just apps in general. Somehow the app writer is leaving these things out. Please let me know

@@LifeHackster its the same for the Ring Elite doorbell. we all thought being POE would allow higher bitrate no compression and higher fps for overall better video quality. But NOPE. remember ring is cloud based and will stick that way because that is how they make money from the cloud subscription. you take that way by allowing local storage to NVR --then they lose profits.

A question I have not really been able to confirm and am hoping you can give the answer. I like the wider angle of view of the Stickup Cam Elite but that has been removed from the newer StickUp Cam Plugin/Battery/Solar with only 110 Horizontal instead of 150 for the POE version. The specs say in can be connected by Ethernet (POE) or 802.3 b/g/n WiFi. Listed under the Included In Box is only a AC power source for the Injector and nothing else. The Videos show choseing connection by Ethernet or USB. CAN you Power with a USB power source (Not Included???) and connecting with WiFi, that way still get the Wider angle views and presumably editable Motion Zones (Just a guess)

Am I alone in not being very impressed with these new cameras? They've been a long time coming and don't seem to offer much of an improvement over the previous generation in picture quality or technology (eg: facial recognition etc), and aren't exactly cheap either...

I think these cameras are average at best - they’re ugly compared to other cameras and I’d like the option to show a small led status light on while the camera is operational like nest and hive do. Performance of the cameras doesn’t justify the cost

If someone is going to take time and effort to run cat wiring, dont install crap Ring products. Just get a TRUE real poe cam that records to NVR. Ring will never release a true security because their income is based on subscriptions. If they allow true poe cam functionality, no one would pay for cloud subscription. There is no improvement using poe version of rings products. If you are running cat wiring for cameras get the nice tru cameras or your effort is wasted if you go ring.
@LifeHackster
@LifeHackster 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you but Ring is pretty accurate in motion detection and motion notifications..their wired cams anyways.. I haven’t seen any POE/NVR systems that can do that. That is the reason why I have Ring cameras around the house but I also have a PoE NVR system that records 24/7. Ring notifies me and when there is motion that I need to check in more detail, then I look at my NVR..

@@LifeHackster he isnt lying. it IS garbage compared to the other poe cameras. The main reason to go poe is not just so you dont have to use wifi, its also that it powers the device, and provides being able to use better hardware that provides better picture quality, no compression higher bitrate faster FPS because it doesnt have wifi limitations anymore--yet ring doesnt do this because their business model is to sell cloud subscriptions--its how they make money. so compared to real POE cameras that setup through NVR, yes it is garbage.

The only new camera I purchased and kept is the amcrest 4mp ptz. I like this little thing, not Poe, can be wire or wireless. Only draw back is that it’s a indoor camera, but I am using it inside, so fine for me. I am likely to purchase the new amcrest 4k 8mp bulllet in the near future, I have more faith in this brand than any other brand out there. I would think the primary advantage is less chance of cut-outs though that isn't as easy to test unless you have problems. I'm not surprised that the video quality is the same as their choice seems to have more to do with their bandwidth and storage costs than anything with a customer's local bandwidth.
@curtisbme
@curtisbme 5 жыл бұрын
@First Name I didn't say power cuts, I said cut-outs. I'm referring to issues where you don't get video, get choppy or it cuts out/freezes for a few seconds. Like he mentions in the video, wifi is the main issue with all of Ring's cameras that causes these (and other) issues. Wired solution eliminates all the variability and issues that wifi brings.
@curtisbme
@curtisbme 5 жыл бұрын
@First Name Yeah, that is all I'm suggesting; that wired benefit is just to eliminate the possibility of issues with wifi. I've not had any issues either, since some of the updates last year addressed a number of problems, but forums indicate lots of folks still do. The camera's wifi chips or software seem to be pretty subpar. Like Lifehackster notes however, I wish wired did give you the option to select for higher bitrate.

True. It will be more data that they need to save to their cloud...I wish they have other recording options aside from their proprietary cloud recording.
@moialder252
@moialder252 5 жыл бұрын
there is no point to use ring products if you are setup for POE and run cat wiring. Ring's business model is get people to pay monthly cloud storage so they will never open up their system for local storage and allow for better quality recording, because then no one would pay the fees anymore.
