It's actually intentional. The performer chokes up on the stick before releasing the stick to bounce on beat. Another viewer explained it in better detail, as they have expertise on the matter. It's in a comment about the same moment by Lukas-jq4vw.

Could be wrong but I think only the strings dropped out? Looks like the woodwinds in the back could still be playing (flutes and clarinets looked like they were playing). Still an effective musical decision to drop out the strings though!

I'm really glad that the orchestra doesn't replace the vocals, but truly enhances the experience. There are many things that can't be done easily by human voice (the runs in the flutes and violins at several climaxes), and they really make the whole piece feel that much bigger and more gorgeous.
@donaldauguston9740
@donaldauguston9740 Жыл бұрын
This is beyond fabulous, but the remarkable nature of the voices is lost. When it was just four voices I was overwhelmed by the sound and the texture. In fact, I was amazed there were NO instruments because they were an orchestra unto themselves. DA
@mikephoenix1992
@mikephoenix1992 2 ай бұрын
Yes! Thank you. That mirrors my own reaction. I feel similarly whenever I hear the King's Singers performing one of their gorgeous a cappella arrangements with instruments added. It's like placing an ornate gilded frame on a painting that was already a perfect, simple masterpiece on its own. It doesn't draw me into that intimate vocal space and blow me away. If I'd heard this version first, I'd certainly still have enjoyed it and appreciated the voices and the arrangement, but with nowhere near the same degree of sheer wonder. This version has power, but has lost the marvelous subtlety of the original. It's good that these collaborations happen, to expose new listeners to the group and to clearly establish its legitimacy in more mainstream music circles (barbershop still being very much perceived as a niche hobby), and it's good that different kinds of musicians get to work together and appreciate each other's talents and skill. And I enjoyed seeing this version... but given the choice, I'll always take the original. :)

I've gotta be honest. If I had never heard the original, I would have thought this version was great. But I'm not entirely sure it actually enhances Aaron Dale's vocal arrangement. I would almost prefer to hear this with a soloist or two instead of the barbershop voicing. There are so many wonderful bits of vocal harmony that are simply drowned out with the full orchestra.

This is so beautiful. I love the original just the same, but this performance has a very different feel to it. The first performance was beautiful for the impressive complexity of the vocal arrangement that gave the medley a deeper texture than you would think possible for an a capella quartet, making the performance far more powerful because it relied entirely on the talent of the vocalists and the arrangement itself. While this one is beautiful because it also feels powerful, but in a calmer and more peaceful way, because it's the same arrangement but with a full orchestra, which takes just enough focus off of the vocals to enhance the song itself without taking too much away from them, which gives the overall performance an impressive yet calm feel. Well done, and thank you!

I can't help but love this one a bit more than their performance for the BHS just because of the power all of them have at the tag. It was already amazing but they all have such a different sound! The leads note at 6:04 in the sustained note is just so good, and sounds so much more supported in this performance. Plus the orchestra did such a good job! They could have really overshadowed the Ringmasters with everything going on at the end( and through the whole thing, tis a lot of instruments) but they really just added to it all. One of the best performances ive seen and you can really hear the improvement for everyone, just so good!
