I agree this is more of a Jazzier arrangement of this song. Ringo's first couple albums were more alternative/rock. This song is from her second album. One cool thing about Ringo is that she's constantly rearranging her songs so that even old classics take on a new taste with every tour that she does. So in this tour she added the piano and gave it a jazz feel. After her first few albums, she created a band called Tokyo Jihen (aka Tokyo Incidents). This performance is from her Tokyo Jihen era. As for her vocals, that's just her style. Perhaps it's an acquired taste. I happen to love it, I think it gives an emotive quality to her vocals. But I can see how some would find it annoying. In Japan she is highly regarded for her song writing. She writes a lot of music for other artists.

I love her voice and music so much. Her voice always reminds me of a slightly overdriven or distorted guitar, which is one of the main things that can draw my attention to a song. The great thing about Sheena Ringos voice in my experience is that this voice adds an edgy rocktone to everything she does and whichever style she chooses for her next interpretation. Here is a great song in English kzbin.info/www/bejne/imqcf5pnZrKDmrs

Here is a later version of the same song kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGPcn2eng8areLs and here is the original video kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3Tbc3uegshqpas I believe Sheena Ringo should be approached primarily as a songwriter. In that area she is among the very best, ever (Cole Porter, Paul McCartney territory). She started out by writing for other singers (at a very young age by the way). I do think she has struggled at times vocally (she has been quite open about this) but because her stage prescence is so overpowering many of her fans (myself included) have gotten used to this singular shortcoming. By the way, the music for the Opening and Closing Games of the upcoming Olympics have been handed to Sheena Ringo. In fact, the Japanese part of the ceremony at the close of the Rio Games was her work. This song you have reacted to, Honnou, is actually 20 years old. I would check out the rest of her vast and exciting oeuvre (her band is called Tokyo Jihen). The transformations she undergoes (often on stage) and much of the content will remind you of Bowie.

Even in this DVD (Just Can't Help It) she goes through multiple transformations starting in the very first song (Yukiguni, definitely my favorite from this set), and in the song before this (Blackout) she "transforms" into what we're seeing in this video. Shiina Ringo is easily my favorite Japanese performer and Tokyo Jihen is by far my favorite Japanese band.

Funny thing is, I love Shiina Ringo, as in I think she's the most versatile female composer in the history of music, and I wanna to get a bit uppity about the criticism of her voice, but I totally get it lol. I actually really liked her music while not being able to get into her voice for several years, and then one day it clicked, not least because she actually has maybe 6 or 7 different kinda tones she uses depending on the song and sentiment. She's fundamentally an incredible vocalist, just extremely skilled and with amazing control, but to a new listener she can come across as weirdly screechy and shrill. It makes sense (at least to some) after a time. If you listen to the Honnou album version/music video and you think she sounds bad it's just too early, too soon, or the wrong time to get into Ringo. When you listen to it and you think it's madness how full bore she can go in her upper mid range and sound on edge but actually be totally in control, then it's time. I get both how a first time listener will think she can't sing and a singing coach will think she's a natural talent. Both make sense.

Nice reaction! Please check her song "Marunouchi Sadistic" (丸ノ内サディスティック).
It's like a god in Japan, but it's not so well known overseas, or is it my way of looking for it? I'm very happy because I don't see many videos of the reaction of the Tokyo incident 😊 The lyrics are radical and erotic. If you like "Active three minutes" "New civilization" "Beaucoup De Bruit tonight" "Winning battle" "Too handsome" "Kenka Joutou" I want you to ask. 翻訳してみました👍🏻
