CORRECTION: Looks like this lead singer/guitarist's name is mostly likely pronounced "SHEENA" (I'm now seeing it spelled this way in other videos). Thank you stefanlast for pointing this out.
@cpa2788 Жыл бұрын
There are no dipthongs in Japanese. "i" sounds like a short "ee". "e" sounds like "eh". Shiina would be the preferred spelling, pronounced "Sheena". Incidentally, "Ringo" (Apple) is her nickname. As a child, she supposedly blushed a lot, like a red apple and was nicknamed Ringo as a consequence, but she's also claimed that her favourite Beatle was Ringo and that's another reason for the name. Only she really knows. Pleased you enjoyed it. The entire 'Shouso Strip' album, from which this track comes, is a joy from beginning to end.

Yeah, it’s written either Shiina or Sheena in English. Don’t think most people take offense Love that you reviewed her
@aruarian43 Жыл бұрын
@@theredwind I don't know how reliable this information is, but I've heard Shiina is trying to propagate that ("Sheena") spelling herself. Like how a lot of her songs have alternative French titles, she seems to be into foreign languages. Whether or not it's her that tried to make "Sheena" happen, it's not going to happen. (at least not for me) "Shiina" is a rather common surname and that's how it's typically spelled.

I am her fan since high school, I am so happy you chose the best version of this song. She didn't write many love songs when she was young, this is the purest love song in her repertoire, this version's emotional expression is the most intense, and the kimono styling brings a kind of suppressed bitterness❤

Some time in the early years of this millennium I caught a glimpse of Shiina (I think it's pronounced Sheena, I've seen various spellings of her name) Ringo on TV and got curious. With all titles being in Japanese I had no idea what her songs were called, so I just randomly ordered one of her albums from eBay. She seems to have dipped her toes in several different styles of music, or at least incorporates bits of it into her own music. One of the tracks that I fell in love with was "Yokushitsu" (somewhere online I found the album's title and tracks written out in latin characters) which had a much more electronic touch. Apparently she often re-arranges/re-invents her songs when she playes them live. This live version of "Yokushitsu" is wild, and quite significantly more guitar-y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6XKf5Wqap56i7c

This song came out around the time I got into Jpop/Jrock, I was on deployment in the Navy and they had her first album available in the ship's store, so I bought it. I have been a listener of JPop/Jrock for decades since, and Shiina Ringo is STILL my #1 favorite artist, just barely beating out Kanno Yoko. She started a genre of Jrock that incorporated Classical, Opera, Jazz, Alternative, Traditional JP instruments, EDM, Synth, Industrial, and Funk. She influenced Jrock for years, and most listeners don't even know it. Gibusu is in my top 3, along with Honnou and Izon-Shou. She could hit the light, whispery notes and in the same phrase switch to her powerful belting notes. It was borderline scary, but overall alluring.

Nice one! I thought you might find it interesting to know that, as I understand, the English line “I wanna be with you” is meant to be: “i 罠 B wiθ U” with the kanji there being pronounced as “wanna” but it’s meaning is “trap” so it’s a more complex line than it appears! Admittedly I only know this because this song is referenced in the song “gives” by BiS (which is pronounced the same as “gips” in Japanese 😊 I recommend taking a look at that song for a future episode maybe! Thanks!

The lyrics says You always want take a picture of me. I always hate that, becuase once I got into the picture, it will get older soon. You always want to say 'absolutely.' I always hate that, because once things become cool, even aboslute becomes a lie. Don't you think so? I wanna be with you Just stay with me here For ever and ever and ever. Nobody knows what tomorrow would be like. so hold me tight now Stay and hold me tight now, darling.' Over all. this song is about how ' I ' cherish this moment rather than tomorrow or yesterday. Sounds a bit literature, but her select of the wording is a bit childish and girly. Like, "gyu to shitete". which means hold me tight but adult mature woman won't say this way. So even lyrics ars bit philosophical, it still remains Kawaii girl song atmosphere.

Shiiina was a huge surprise to me. I always thought she was a pop star - yknow, someone who just performs for other writers, cant touch an instrument, is just there to be sexy, pose, and perform vocally. But yeah, no, not Shiina Ringo. She has her own recognized singing style and vibrato, plays live instruments on stage, and creates her own artistic flair. She's much closer to David Bowie or Lady Gaga. Respect is due, I think, even if it isn't your thing. BTW, her duet with Utada Hikaru is a work of art. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4HHnZl_nd-De9E&pp=ygUabmlqaWthbiBkYWtlIG5vIGJha2Fuc2UgcHY%3D Nijikan dake no BAKANSU: A two hour vacation.

As others have said, Sheena is the singer/rhythm guitarist in this performance, this song was her 5th single released in early 2000. Since '04 when she initially grew tired of purely being a solo artist she's also been part of the band Tokyo Jihen (Tokyo Incidents), though they had an 8yr hiatus from '12-'20 (partly down to the birth of her second child). In this video the bassist is Seiji Kameda from the Jihen, who has also been a long term collaborator who produced a lot of her early solo stuff.

Check out this single from their initial return from hiatus, the English song name is The Scarlet Alibi, though the literal translation of the Japanese title would be Proof of Eternal Absence (Sheena usually has official alternative English titles for Jihen songs). The video includes a million easter eggs from their older MVs, it does a decent job of highlighting the superb musicianship of every member and has a few twists & turns in the arrangement I find particularly satisfying: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHyldIZ4m7Vsiqs
