Network Security: Rings, Fields, and Finite Fields
Topics discussed:
1) Properties that are satisfied for an abelian group to be a ring, commutative ring, integral domain, and field.
2) Consolidation of all properties to be satisfied for a ring, commutative ring, integral domain, and field.
3) Properties that are satisfied for a set to be a finite field.
4) Familiar examples of fields.
5) Application areas of finite fields.

Thank you very much for this perfect presentation of rings, fields and finite fields. I have a question, at 12:17, why you said that p is obviously a prime number? Is it because if p is not a prime number then we can't always divide by a non-zero number? so not every number has a multiplicative inverse which contradicts M6 so it's not an integral domain then not a finite field right ?

If we mod the integers and the modulus is a prime, say p, then each positive integer that is less than p is relatively prime to p and, therefore, has a multiplicative inverse modulo p. So, when we mod by a prime p we construct a finite field of p elements; the integers mod p is a finite field

Is (-b) the same as b^-1. It makes no sense to me that (-b) should exist if a-b does not exist. a + b^-1 makes much more sense.
