Deep dive into Rings of Power Episode 6: "Udûn" ! We'll look for all the references to Tolkien's deeper lore, explain what is happening, and I'll give some thoughts along the way. While this was a more action-oriented episode, there's still a lot of lore-related things to discuss and an explosive ending (which I correctly predicted!)

Fun fact #1: Gandalf calls the Barlog of Moria the Flame of Udûn. Excerpt: 'You cannot pass,' he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.' So far, Adar is one of the better characters in my opinion. He has a backstory that actually makes you want to figure out what made him evil. He obviously still holds on to his Elven roots. I wonder if she will have a black, smokey smudge on her face when she walks away from this scene, unscathed. Maybe her hair will be slightly poofed out like a mad scientist after an exploding chemical reaction from an 80's film. I'm intrigued about whether she will fall down or simply flex and grunt, a little to take the explosion like a hero. (crossing my fingers)

This is unrelated to any lore, but I thought it was an amazing choice to add flood water to the volcano. I'm a geologist and this is probably as close as film can get to portraying a *sort of* accurate rendition of HOW a volcano actually erupts: by the addition of water and other volatiles (H2O, Co2 etc) that would cause crystallisation of minerals, mostly feldspars, to form. The formation of these crystals in that magma actually takes a greater volume than the magma due to the relatively greater size of the now solid crystal, thus expanding it, making it thick and mushy, and increasing pressure in the chamber, so when there's too much and nowhere to go, an eruption occurs. IN the real world this occurs on much slower timescales and with a lot less drama, but... I am SO happy to have seen it! Okay, its a rocky rant, but just this scene made me overlook whatever mini-misgivings I have (most).

The only issue I had with the water being the trigger was scale. The amount of water 🌊 was not visually enough to even cool the amount of lava on screen.
@mikem9001
@mikem9001 Жыл бұрын
This shows the sort of trouble that screenwriters get into when they try to think of a natural explanation for what Tolkien said was a supernatural event. Morgoth created Mount Doom, millenia before Sauron decided to take over Mordor. When he did take up residence in the area, the mountain did not erupt or explode. He forged the One Ring in secret, at magma flows deep within the mountain. It was 1800 years later when the mountain really erupted, and it was no natural event: Sauron needed ash cover to blot out the sun over a wide area so his orc armies could advance in daylight.
@joshuachong5204
@joshuachong5204 Жыл бұрын
@@butchgreene Oh yes. I have to somewhat agree. Usually, in geology, its not a lot of water involved relative to the chamber in a short period (say a couple years), but this volume adds up over a long period (100 - 1000 - million year), and usually comes from meteoric (rain) water. I'd give them some points for condensing a thousand year scale into... 20 seconds. Visually, it gives a starting point for many who aren't knowledgeable or never took interest to begin as a discussion point, so on that note I am satisfied. :) Lore-wise, I think it ties it up... sort of nicely, but definitely not cannonically.

I suspect that the refugees and Arondir spent some time weakening the structure to the point of collapse. It's old and you know that Gil-Galad never approved a budget that would have paid for proper maintenance for the outposts. The elves stationed there probably knew all the spots that were held together with duct tape and bailing twine, so sabotage might have been simple.

Adar's take on the orcs as him being quite a literal father to them, like a first generation of orcs, it was sad as hell. I don't see Adar's statement about Sauron healing Middle Earth as problematic. From Sauron's and Adar's point of view that is what they think they are doing even if from any other perspective it is evil and destructive.
@chriss3276
@chriss3276 Жыл бұрын
And it fits with several of Tolkien's writing where he says that after Morgoth's defeat, Sauron's repentance to Eonwe was at least partialy sincere. Sauron feared the sentence he would face under the Valar and out of pride he didn't go back to Valinor to face judgement, but Tolkien does write that Sauron at first tried to repair Middle-earth from the damage done in the First Age before falling back into his old ways. Sort of a self-imposed penance that wasn't as bad as what the Valar would have required of him with the hope of then being "let off the hook" by the Valar later. I often thought that what pushed Sauron back to evil was that he, loving order, became frustrated that mankind (having wills of their own) didn't follow his ideas. He then began to try to force his will upon them and trying to dominate the wills of others led him back to what caused his fall in the first place.

@Pixis1 Жыл бұрын
This was how I interpreted it as well. Villains usually don't see themselves as evil. From Sauron's point of view, he was bringing order to Middle-earth -- by attempting to conquer it and impose his will upon its peoples. Maybe this was his way of "repairing" the damage done by Morgoth. The discord that Morgoth added to the Music of the Ainur brought evil into existence. Sauron is trying to draw that evil to himself and give it purpose. Morgoth corrupted early elves to create the orcs. Sauron is organizing the orcs and giving them a home in the Southlands. His actions are cruel and destructive to everyone else but to Sauron, these are necessary evils in the name of order.

When the season ends, it would be great if you could show us on a Middle Earth map your hypothesized routes of the various characters over the course of Season 1. I'm a little confused by some of the distances and the time it takes to get from one place to another (eg. Khazad-dum to Linden, or where exactly Bronwyn's village might be). It would be nice to see some of the places on a more zoomed out map, so it's easier to see the relative locations of everyone (before zooming in).

@@BenyaminLorit That's not true at all. Straight out copying of another movie doesn't "appeal" to fans. What would appeal is genuine creativity within the parameters of Tolkien's world. Such as e.g. Peter Jackson with the hobbits stealing the fireworks then being forced to do the washing up by Gandalf - no hint of this in Tolkien's work, but quite consistent with it. ROP writers don't seem capable of this level of creativity without changing the fundamental basis of Tolkien's ethos.

This is the most exhausting part of engaging into (or being forced into) any sort of discourse around this property because at the end of the day, all that are but arbitrary stuff built on highly subjective reasoning and people wind up just cherry picking stuff that works and doesn't work for them then it becomes an endless cycle of pointless online discussion (and we've had too many of those even during the days of The Hobbit trilogy. 😅) And to think, this wasn't even a Jackson movies vs RoP conversation. Just imagine the life that Adar has led - awoken unbegotten with a blank, fresh mind beneath the stars in the years of the trees in Cuiviénen (or at least in one of the first few generations that predate Finwe), attempted to found a culture from first principles with the other elves, kidnapped by an evil God and subjected to unimaginable horrors in Udun, seen literally billions of his twisted descendents enslaved by Morgoth and Sauron and then slaughtered like animals by the Noldor and Valar, then abandoned by his masters as useless as the continent he lived on imploded, somehow survived the cataclysm and escaped to wander Middle Earth for millennia... I can’t fault Amazon for going in their own direction since they were forbidden from referencing directly 99% of it. As far as Arondir's speech goes...I thought it actually fit his character pretty well. He doesn't seem like much of a talker, earlier in the season he said to Bronwyn that he has expressed his feelings for her in every way but words. He's a very stoic, reserved, kinda quiet lead by example type guy. He motivates more by being out front and showing the others how to be brave. Rousing speeches just aren't his style basically, maybe, in my opinion.

Yeah, it was a case where a relatively clunky rallying speech was actually an element of his character. He's not really a leader, he was a subordinate. He's been forced to share a leadership role now with Bronwyn, who is definitely more of a people person, purely because he knows he's the rock of support those people needed to cling to. Like the moment Galadriel turns up, a person he knows of, and can defer to in a leadership sense, he seems genuinely relieved.

At 19:38: I think the concept of orcs being irredeemable is a wonderful concept for the show to explain that was never at all touched on in Peter Jackson's trilogy, and rightfully so. Given their tragic backstory, you do have to question what sense of the divine remains within them as Adar says. However, I doubt the showrunners will make a dramatic statement of this, as clearly in the Third Age they are servants of evil still. I always enjoyed the concept that without the iron fist of a dark master, they are timid, shy nocturnal creatures with a penchant for violence, but not necessarily cruel.

I didn’t read the Galadriel/Halbrand scene as romantic either. I haven’t gotten that from any of their interactions. One of Tolkien’s very core themes is that characters can “love” each other without it having to be romantic. The camaraderie and brotherhood of Men, the shared history and suffering of the elves, the national pride of the Dwarves. All of these foster a love between these peoples that doesn’t have to be romantic. Like when people try to argue that Frodo and Sam are somehow romantically involved. They aren’t. They love each other. And they aren’t romantic. It’s possible. Tolkiens themes center on this idea of love between fellowships, love between friends. Love that isn’t romantic and doesn’t need to be. There’s absolutely no reason Galadriel and Halbrand can’t love each other and also not be romantically attracted to each other. That’s very much in keeping with Tolkien.

Not sure if they intended it or not, but I really enjoyed the attention to detail during this episode. When the "orc" army is marching on the village I initially thought it strange that they needed torches, since orcs have superior dark vision (to borrow a phrase from D&D), but then it all made perfect sense when it turned out the initial attack force was made up mostly of humans, and when the real orc army attacks, they do so from the cover of darkness, as one would expect them to. I also appreciated that Galadriel was able to see land long before the men, which she wouldn't technically have been able to do due to the curvature of the earth, but at this point in time, the earth is flat, so she would have no difficulty doing so.

I dont know how deviating from the lore is inherently a bad thing. If I want pure, 100% Tolkien, I'll read Tolkien. And when it comes to lore, The Silmarillion was designed to be an *in universe* scriptural history from the subjective perspective of people in Middle Earth (which Tolkien said). It's "history" the same way the book of Exodus is "history". It was never meant to be an indisputable, totally accurate historical record. That's why if feels so authentic.

@@raskolnikov6443 If you can make a coherent criticism of the show without resorting to "It's different from the lore therefore it is automatically bad," then fine. That's not really my issue. I have my own quibbles and issues with the show. The show is developed for a casual global viewing audience who are mostly just familiar with the films. That's the continuity they're mostly concerned about. So I am judging the show based on the expectations that Amazon set. My main issue with the fandom right now is that lore purism is a boring and lazy critical approach for any IP adaptation when taken to its logical conclusions. If you want to remain totally pure to Tolkien, then there should be NO adaptations at all. The ultimate endpoint of that perspective is an intellectual and aesthetic nihilism that rejects any new creation.

I can buy into the idea that these two character who clearly have a struggle within them, who both maybe need to find peace, that maybe they find it within each other, and felt a connection with each other that is strong and powerful, but not romantic. Either Celeborn isn't in the picture yet (making me suspect Halbrand will die/step aside for that relationship to occur), but I did see some analysis on how nonmonogamous Galadriel's extended family were, suggesting that even if she has a betrothal to Celeborn, they have 'an understanding', but that's major speculation (considering the other time adjustments, I think the showrunners have gone for the first option).

The show has spent a lot of time dwelling on the immortality of elves and their perception of time. I personally think Celeborn is out there somewhere and they just haven't mentioned him yet, though why you wouldn't mention such a thing, I don't know. By far my favorite part of the episode and I think my favorite moment of the series so far was when Adar tells Galadriel that "We are creations of the One. Masters of the secret fire, same as you." I think this line is great both from a narrative perspective of continuing to humanize the orcs and as a reference to Tolkiens views on the creations of Morgoth. These aren't the evil, nameless, and faceless thralls of the Hobbit or the Lord of The Rings trilogy. They very clearly have feelings and emotions the same as humans and elves do. It's their origin, which they had no decision about, which caused the endless conflict between them and the other races of middle earth. I'm not saying they're the good guys of course, but it's a little more grey than black and white. It is also wonderful as a reference to the creation of the world and how Tolkien views the creations of evil. Eru Ilúvatar himself says that "...No theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined." So Adar is 100% correct that they are all creations of Ilúvatar and have the same true life that the elves have. Galadriel may not see it or want to acknowledge it, but the Uruk's have a part to play in the story which Eru has designed. I'm interested to see where this concept goes in the series.

In Middleearth Sauron is " the great deceiver" in real life according to Catholic teachings (which are the core framework of the LOTR) Satan is "the great deceiver". I think it'd be cool if the nearly extinct orcs found some sense of peace in what time they have left. They are in many ways comparable to any other country that went to war under the power of a dictator, and like in our history we shouldn't hold it against them when several generations have passed and they have suffered just as much in war.

15:05 My take on Halbrand is he is not Sauron. But, as King of the Southlands, he will end up being turned into one of the "lesser" Nazgul - which would be acceptable to me because if I'm correct, the origins of at least 4 of the Nazgul are not known so as much as I'm critical of this show, I'll let that one slide if he does get turned. From a purely TV-show thing, for those who don't follow Tolkein's world, it will be a "Anakin-the-good-guy-ends-up-as-Darth-Vader" moment.
@johnnymatheis1018
@johnnymatheis1018 Жыл бұрын
That would be the best result here, that he would be a future Nazgul. It's pretty much sure that he doesn't turns out to be the dead king under the mountain, because he would have to have a longer lifetime than explained to be cursed by Isildur for not helping in the big war, and it would be ridiculous for him to be Sauron. That would indeed be kindergarten writing to make him Sauron. There would be no explanation for the other people on the raft, and even less motivation for his actions, although he and Galadriel have had no motivation for anything they do any way in this story. He is given too much screen time and too much story line to not be included in any back stroy telling from LOTR, I think, so he probably becomes something, and logically, that would be a Nazgul. If the writers have any sense at all, they'll agree with you and do just that.

I definitely think Theo will be one of the 9 kings. His mum just became the leader. Halbrand being one of the 9 makes sense, too, and I'd love to see a more imposing version of Sauron. But so far, Halbrand is hitting all the important beats of Sauron's journey during this time in this area, and we know they've already adjusted the timeline to put all these players on the map. Basic plot beats aside, i am happy with what they're doing, and I'll be happy either way it goes. I'd just be super extra happy if we are right about Halbrand lol. ♥

@Primvs Rex The fact that some of the show's senior staff were responsible for the awful script writing on Game of Thrones Season 6, 7 and 8, I should have known better. I honestly didn't think Halbrand would be Sauron given that in the books, Sauron 'masked himself' as an Elf called Anatar but the Elves only discovered the treachery *only after* Sauron made the One Ring. So, Anatar didn't work with Celebrimbor for one epsiode. It took years. F*ck, I hate this show.

The Galadriel portrayed in the show reminds me of the dark side of her we glimpse when Frodo offers her the one ring. She talks about how the ring would change her and she passes the test of the rings power and says something about being able to pass into the west and diminish I think. Anyway, somehow that makes sense to me that we are seeing a side of her for a bit before her character arc into wisdom.

This is exactly what I was thinking. She has wants and desires, and there must have been some amount of wisdom she gained in her long life that brought her to the mind of Galadriel in the 3rd age. Sometimes she's a tiny tiny bit overly dramatic in her silent expressions (if that makes sense) but I feel like she definitely will be growing through the series, especially when Adar called her Uruk. I was like, "Damn. Got her." Haha

Alright, I Googled it. Turns out the “no Sauron in the first season” thing was a rumor. That same rumor reported that their would be “sexless nudity,” which obviously isn’t going to happen. So we can’t trust that source. That said, we obviously haven’t met Sauron yet. He might still show up in the final episodes, but he hasn’t yet.

Sauron was taken to Númenor as a prisoner by Ar-Pharazon in the book… quite a massive departure from the lore (far more than we’ve already seen) to have him rescue Galadriel at sea, and then in turn be rescued by Elendil and taken to Westernesse. Will be interesting to find out.

Sure, but with no relevance to what Tolkien wrote at all. What they are trying to show is something that occurred 1800 years later. When Sauron forged the One Ring, he did it in secret. He did it deep within Mt Doom. There was volcanic activity, but no great explosion - that was the opposite of what he wanted.

I still agree with what I said last week. “My theory is that Sauron is already at work with Celebtimbor as Annatar and that is why we still haven’t seen or been confirmed a Sauron. I think the moment Annatar comes into it everything will make sense and we’ll even have a more definite time line.” It’s still plausible.

All the heavy hints convinced me that Halbrand is a misdirect. I reckon we've not seen Sauron yet, he's somewhere in Lindon, influencing Gil-galad and making him believe he needs to get the mithril to save the elves. Sauron can then use the mithril to make the rings.

Yet during this period she dwelt in Lorien and held off the forces of Dol-Guldur. Clearly she had great powers of her own that were not dependent on any ring!
