Tolkien wanted, among other things, to give the English their myths back. I can not imagine that Angles, Saxons and Jutes (three Germanic tribes that English came from) ever saw anybody drasticly different from them, and thus it's also logical that they would not have people that are not looking like Europeans in their mythology. They would've met Romano-Brytons, Romans, Franks, Celts, Frisians and all of those peoples were white (and no one in Europe of that time would have the need of describing them by race, bc 99,99% of Europeans were of the same race). Europeans today do not separate themseves by such racial lines, the Europeans see themselves in terms of nations and divide on those lines, and sometimes divide on etnicity. I think Americans who see everything in racial terms don't understand this.

"just think about it, they took one of the most majestic, most magnificent female character written in modern literature, the embodiment of grace on middle earth. the person whom her mere presence changes the very nature of the earth itself and makes it magical and peaceful, the person whom her hair was considered more valuable than all the jewel beneath the earth. and they turned her to an idiot, heartless, vengeful Mary Sue! if you really understand, respect and love Tolkien's writings, this is enough to hate the show. it's kind of like depicting Gandhi as a warrior flame thrower in WW2, who laughs when people are burning! and at the end claim that its true to real Gandhi's biography. then when people and historians say: this is a disaster and an insult. accuse them as anti Indians and racists. this is exactly what amazon is doing. there is power and authority in non violence. the most powerful characters in Tolkien legendarium are non violent, Tom Bombadil is considered as thee most powerful being in meddle earth, and his childish and playful and sings songs and gather flowers! Tolkien understood this the most. the showrunners don't. every character in the legendarium represents something, for example Gollum is representation of self pity and depression. Sauron is FEAR and Galadriel as I mentioned is the embodiment of grace. and this representations of values and plagues of human life and psyche, forms the root structure of all of the Tolkien's story. we love it because of them, because we recognize our own grace when we see Galadriel or our own hopefulness when Samwise can find a star in the darkness of Mordor or in the ring and the burden that we all have in our lives. this representations are all part of a whole, together they form the soul and essence of what we call the Lord of The Rings. this is why we love it so much, because it represents our psychology, humanity and life. and it is ageless, colorless and genderless, because it wants to represents us as human beings not a mere identity. you cannot change them. Tolkien himself could not change them. it does not matter if you own a house, if you remove a break from its foundation it will crumble. and amazon just removed many. and this rule is true for any art whether it is a symphony or a book or a painting."

The ironic thing is that as Amazon accuses the negative reviews of being false and left by trolls if you read the 5 out of 5 star or 10 out of 10 star reviews left at these review sites they, by far, seem like the reviews that are most likely to be fake. A dead giveaway is that many of them start with the lie, "I'm a huge Tolkien fan and have read all his books". Then they proceed to talk about how much this feels like the world of Tolkien and how true it is to the spirit of Tolkien. Then they call it the greatest thing ever. The sky opened up and they saw God it was so good, blah, blah, blah. Now that is a fake ass review. No one that has read all of Tolkien's books would ever say this shit does a good job of honoring or adhering to his lore. The creators of this show were sniffing their own farts when making this show. Galadriel is just perfect in every way and form. She doesn't need help from anybody. Any foe she faces stands no chance against her. She strong, she fierce, she a woman!!!! When you make a character based off Rey Syndrome, meaning a character is just so good at everything, they have zero weaknesses, zero flaws, while overcoming each hurtle with ease, you are creating a character that doesn't exist. Any good storyteller understands putting the human elements into their stories, which is based off people's strengths, weaknesses, quirks, and personality. Galadriel in ROP and is nothing but a mary sue, she shows the emotions of a person watching paint dry in the most boring manner possible. I take that back, watching paint dry is more pleasing then watching this show. It's obvious they are pushing out an agenda that continues to go down the rabbit hole of being woke. These creators were probably thinking to themselves. "Oh yeah, people are going to have their minds blown when they see Galadriel kicking butt, and taking names, not to mention Eminem being part of the show, there is no way this could backfire!" Well low and behold the moment Rings of Power was announced, fans were against it, the minute the first trailer came out, the fans were still against it. Second trailer, fans still against it, the "Official trailer." Fans were against it. So, is it any surprise that when this show came out, fans would come out of the woodwork giving their legit criticism against this show even existing? Let this be a lesson to future film makers, whether you are a writer, director of photography, directors, make up department, any many more listings I didn't mention. Just because you have rights to a great story, doesn't mean your films or shows will be successful. It's the planning of everything, from start to finish, making sure that what is being made still holds true to the original source material, having no political agenda being shoved into it. It has to stay pure and true to what the original writer created, or it's not going to stick the landing. Peter Jackson understood when making the LOTR trilogy, he had to stay true to Tolkien's legacy, and that's why the movies were a sucess. No agenda, just great story telling. This show will go down as the most infamous pieces of garbage in history, okay my essay is complete, enjoy your day.

This honored the lore, felt human and real, and was really a good set up for the building of the forge. @@i_grok_u2902 I disagree. She was wrong for the part because she was the wrong color to play a dwarf in Middle Earth. The argument that "It's fantasy, so you can do whatever you want" remains one of the worst things imaginable as a fantasy fan. That's the last recourse of people who clearly neither enjoy nor apprecite the depth of fantasy as a genre, its roots in classical literature and in mythology that predates the written word. Fantasy does not mean that you can do whatever you want - it means that the *rules* can be whatever you want. Once the rules are in place, you cannot - and should not - just change them. That's what harms settings like WarCraft, the writers don't give a shit about the setting's internal consistency, retconning and altering things at a whim until it's barely recognizable as what it once was. You can make the rules for your fantasy world be so that skin colour is entirely random, or all Elves are black, or simply that they have a wide ethnic variety just like humans, whatever you feel the need to do for your world... but it has to be *your* world. Tolkien's world is already written, the rules are already established - changing it to accomodate your personal preferences is arrogant, self-centered, and most of all *lethal* to any attempt to appeal to existing fans of the world and story. People aren't racist for not wanting to see black Elves and Hobbits in Middle-earth, they're just aware that their existence means you do not respect the source material.
@Balandrus2 жыл бұрын
It's also blatant cultural appropriation. High fantasy is primarily based on Germanic folklore and mythos, and making it "diverse" should be frowned upon. I wouldn't be able to create a fantasy based on African mythos, and insert white people, why is it allowable in reverse?

So what difference does it make what people think?? They made this trash to insult everyone who liked Peter Jackson’s work! These people already knew that more than half of the U.S. population would hate this program and they don’t care about Europe anyway! This is why they created the series to be something that would make people want to rip their eyes out when they saw it! They wanted to preach to all of those straight white people who saw the Peter Jackson films and expected some half way decent entertainment! They wanted to be able to stick people’s noses in the reality of this new era of “woke!” These producers and others involved in this joke are the result of decades of American colleges and universities being run by elite totalitarians who hate western civilization and have attempted to indoctrinate every student that they got their hands on! Tolkien is part of that civilization that they hate so much! He is a target and they had a two fold reason for getting their filthy hands on even a small part of Tolkien’s work! They could trample Tolkien’s work and make their own piece of crap the way “that it should have been!” Oh, yes! They really showed him! It is so ridiculous!! This piece of glitzy trash is a comedy!! A true comedy! The wardrobe is a joke! The actors are jokes! The writing is just unbelievable. When Elon Musk eventually buys Twitter at a lower price, if I were him, I'd immediately kick out Neil Gaiman. Just because. Also...maybe Gaiman SHOULD ask Elon Musk for advice on TV series. Maybe then Netflix's "The Sandman" wouldn't be garbage.

When Globradriel and Aunt Jemima attacked that troll together, it was AMAZING, so very INSPIRE, and cat-ladies, wine-aunts, and show-runners give it a MUCH DESERVED 10 out of 5. As for “Whoopi Goldberg” (irl name Caryn Johnson), if you ever notice anyone taking their cultural cues from her, hit them with something heavy.. like the leaden & mostly lifeless RoP script.

Let's tackle this "Harfoots have darker skin" argument! Do the the Spanish, French, Greeks, and Italians have darker skin than the Irish, Scots and Finns? Are they all still white? Done! Also, if you're using this line as an argument, then you also have accept that the elves all had fair skin! The fairest of all! You can't have it both ways!

@@awavey because equality. It doesn't matter if a race has defined characteristics. As long as there is equality. If a a race with predefined characteristicts (such as tanned skin) doesn't include any other shade of skin, it's prejudiced or racist. I liked the part in the first few minutes when Galadriel takes out her dagger to point to a spot on her map, while standing alone looking at the map alone... Tbh even Tauriel in the Hobbit was badass. Because she was just extremely skilled like legolas. Its her profession. Galadriel the politician taking on a Cavetroll in a matter of munutes while the entire fellowship struggled is just bs. Besides she was never written nor intended as this warhero as its not her role and theme in the overall story.
