I first stumbled across pirate radio in 2006 from my old house in rural Buckinghamshire. 87.5 uk's finest. Brilliant station. Followed them for years. Listened every weekend. Have several clips from inside their studio as a friend of mine DJ'd for them for a bit

When I went to England is 2017. I got a radio and started scanning. I found SO many stations I was really astonished. I picked up Cyndicut FM and really enjoyed listening to it. I have video of it. I ran a pirate radio station here in Australia in 2010 but I was shut down within a month but I wasn’t raided. I just had a friendly knock on my door just one guy with a device in his hand and a badge from the ACMA. ACMA stands for Australian Communications and Media Authority. I had to shut it down and had to surrender the transmitter. I just got a warning letter which I still have today. Before then I ran a pirate TV station back in the mid to late 90’s. I ran it for over 3 years but then I got caught.

That's crazy how cat and mouse the fight was between the pirate stations and the authorities. Aerials down drain pipes! Reminds me of the WW2 auxiliary units! I presume ofcom / DTI had equipment to detect the transmitters.

Great to hear Killer give some props to the late Lee John, aka Tech from UKs Finest 87.5! We found him a studio next to ours in Berkshire and helped him set things up there, especially the early online transmissions for that too. Had some really banging broadcasts on there, hitting places like Northampton, Luton, Portsmouth etc. I was in the room when him and Killer were blasting at each other on the phone about nicking each others transmitters. Was quite crazy really but will look back at that with fond memories. Got some old broadcast recordings from back then so may dig them out for old times sake

Little blast from the past this! Royal court tower block, Brooke house, South fields, Manor trading estate, Temple Farm industrial estate... Wonder if many of those old crews and pirate stations still broadcast in some form or another? Forgetting much, but do recall a few names: Charge FM, Renegade FM, TXR Radio, Storm FM...

Blimey Lee John "orgriginal technician" blast from the past. Didn't know he'd passed on, bet he gets out well from up there, even on a little single dipole RIP. Won't lie had one of his rigs out of that tree!! Only climbed it once weren't ever gonna do that again! Must of been off his rocker to keep climbing that beast! I remember the pointblank crew as well had a little run in in the late 90s with them, biddle, Dave H, etc.. Their rig was in a tower block in Slough you could see it from the M4. They tracked me down and followed me about finding out where I lived, worked, kept calling my parents and brothers land lines. They found out I was on a CB so they tailed me keyed up on channel 19 and told me they were coming at me "point blank range". I was only a kid and I realised they were behind me so thought best thing to do was to pull over and chat to them. They were actually a nice bunch of blokes that didn't like how we ran our station and a couple of our DJ's had slagged them off saying their DJ's were to serious and didn't sound like they actually enjoyed being "on air". Loved tracking stations down or looking for new sites. Those were the days!! Cheers Lewis great KZbin channel for us radio geeks and ex pirates. I remember uncle k on tower block dreams great to reminisce. Long live the pirates!! I miss the pirate days, climbing tower blocks, installing rigs, band 1 links then moving to microwave links. Anyone rember the "legal" sellers of rigs? Broadcast warehouse, Veronica kits. 1W PLL's running into a burner (amp). I miss those aluminium boxes with a hole cut out for a fan. Still got a couple kicking about somewhere. Won't be firing them up anytime soon though those days have been and gone.

I worked with Pete Goodin and lets just say he wasn't well liked by many other field staff either. My speciality was devising methods and custom tools to get transmitters out of Sh*t pipes etc. and I'd have to say I got quite good at it and I think a lot of pirate operators would agree. There wasn't much I couldn't remove, many pirates will remember my large blue van. For me it wasn't personal or a vendetta I hated that it was just a job and an interesting challenge/game I'm friends with several ex. pirate DJs to this day. Re. putting transmitters down shafts, first they started using car jacks expanded against the side of the shaft with the transmitter hanging from it, easy to remove so they added security wheel nuts from cars welded onto the jack screw, didn't take long to defeat that, next was weld a hinged lid onto the top of the jack with a lock on it, that took a bit more time to figure out but I defeated it, there where times where we couldn't get them out, then we cut cables and also experimented with ways of permanently disabling the rig or at least key parts of it and just leaving it down the hole some of those methods where more successful than others, let just say that mains power down an RF feeder doesn't always end well ;-) I also abseiled down shafts, rode the top of lifts, climbed trees and radio masts can't deny it was fun.

@Uncle K the Reverend TBH I didn't do much work in Essex I was mainly South and North London which is probably why your rig stayed there 4 years ;-) No hard feelings.

@Uncle K the Reverend Actually I missed out a stage in car jack development when they obviously figured out one of our methods and put tubes round the wheel nuts to shield them. The poles got stolen from our van once but after a bit of negotiation they were returned.

@Uncle K the Reverend Might be a step too far to say how we defeated the locks but would be interested to know if you figured out how.

Interesting stuff, I live on the south coast but regularly worked on pmr radio systems in London for the past 25 years and always entertained myself by checking out the pirate stations whilst driving around. I don’t think I’ve been on any London tower block which doesn’t have the remains of an antenna chopped up by OFCOM laying on the roof somewhere. Have occasionally come across‘ ‘live’ transmitters, but have no desire to cause any problems and leave them be. Good to hear Point Blank mentioned, always banging tunes, audio was always very crisp and signal was something else. Heard them on my way home down the A3 almost to Portsmouth once. Rarely hear them mentioned though.
