Thanks for more interesting content and good timing as I’ve just been relistening to The Lazarus Heist podcast where some of the ‘creative techies’ in DPRK have been making themselves a fortune.

People in North Korea can't get television signal from nearby country because of different standards (on top of limited UHF signal range). South Korea uses ATSC for digital television and North Korea uses DVB-T or DVB-T2 (both seems unlikely). Any digital television in North Korea is unable to use any possible digital signal it might get from nearby country unless its from that country (might be possible if smuggled into North Korea). This is blocking by not aligning with nearby countries standards. China uses DTMB standard. Japan uses ISDB-T standard. I also don't know if the common people of North Korea can in general buy television since there's a massive poverty inside North Korea.

As I understand, televisions are among the goods that you're more likely to be able to get if you're closer to the elite. Probably not so uncommon in Pyongyang, maybe not elsewhere. Of course jamming signals in one city would also be very easy I think I remember that some villages have televisions for public use so everyone can watch the news, though I can't remember where I heard that

I love listening to Voice of Korea (Radio Pyongyang) broadcasts. They're hilarious. Thanking The Supreme Leader for everything from the sun rising to the invention of electricity. Interestingly the propaganda isn't much different to the faff from the West tbh.

Listening to that jamming noise at the end (around 9:30), it sounds pretty uniform. What happens if you broadcast/overlay and inverted signal (of just the jamming) on top? Is it enough to cancel it out and clearly hear the original signal or is there another reason why that doesn't work?

Lewis Echo of Hope is part of the the George Otis Evangelical Ministry. The Flag Ship station was KVOH as in The Voice of Hope. Its operations were to transmit propaganda in to Cuba. George Otis also set up a clandestine station in Lebanon in the1980s that was eventually found out tracked down and blown up by the Arab Muslim forces of the South Lebanese Army. Otis died about 15 years ago. And KVOH shutdown its US Transmitter Facility in the hills east of Simi Valley just last week after operating there for 50 years

BTW for those of you interested in doing your own research his name is George K Otis. His evangelical operation is called High Adventure Ministries. An article about him publish in a local Simi Valley newspaper in the mid 1990s linked him to the USIA (US Information Agency).

North Korea doesn't really block or jam much of anything. Rather, they rely on most normal people not having the equipment to be able to tune in. With the right bootleg equipment and in the right areas of the country, you can pick up South Korean TV no problem. But the elites have access to that anyway so whatever. Up to 2016 or so the entire outside internet was uncensored - it was just such a small number of highly trusted people had access anyway that it wasn't deemed a problem. Chinese visitors even reported that it was easier to get online in Pyongyang than Beijing.

Thank you for your excellent presentations. My KZbin phone algorithm had, immediately above this suggested video, a collection of '70's-era airchecks from Miami pop station Y-100, and I had to think that if Our Dear Friend adopted the breezy Y-100 DJ style for his propaganda station, it'd be beyond hilarious.

Lewis have you ever been able to listen to North Korea's radio signals?
@notsorandumusername
@notsorandumusername Жыл бұрын
It's probably best to use webSDR for that - short wave radio via a webpage. There are many websites for that, receiving from various places all over the world. The website allows you to tune the receiver you're connected to. I've listened to a German-language broadcast from North Korea like that. Of course you need to know the timetables and the frequencies, but's that no different for a standalone receiver.

A comment at 0:47, I saw an excellent video from a previous citizen of Pripyat who was a child when the Chernobyl disaster took place. He told his story of the event (this came soon after the Netflix show about the disaster) and he mentioned that they could NOT turn the in house propaganda radio off, just turn the volume up or down. (This was mentioned because there was played classical music non-stop and in Soviet this indicated that something extraordinary happended. Great video itself!). So.... Is it really a myth after all about the on/off?
