One of the brightest stars of Japanese photography, Rinko Kawauchi is currently on view at Fotografiska Stockholm with her major exhibition in Sweden, "a faraway shining star, twinkling in hand”.
Kawauchi is known the world over for her dreamy, fantastical imagery, and this exhibition brings together over 40 works from two of her recent series: "M/E" and "An interlinking". As well as breathtaking photos, these works include video art, light boxes, and photo sculptures.
In "M/E", Kawauchi begins a journey in Iceland, which is then cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, thus leaving her to complete the project at home in Hokkaido, Japan. "An interlinking" sees the artist choose from 20 years worth of everyday photos, often with her daughter as subject. Both works together invite the viewer into Kawauchi's life in increasingly personal and intimate ways.
In Fall 2023, Fotografiska visited Kawauchi at her home and studio close to Tokyo to find out more about her creative process, visit to Iceland and where she takes her inspiration from.
