This summer, Wales will finally end their 58-year international tournament drought. How far they go will largely depend on one man. Fortunately for them, he happens to be worth £86m...
"We know we didn’t win a trophy but for our country to achieve something like that was amazing and to be a part of it was another dream come true"
Gareth Bale is the world's most expensive player, playing for one of the world's biggest football teams, who, at the time of writing, was set to compete in his second Champions League final in three years.
What's abundantly clear though, is that the 26-year-old Madridista remains at heart but a sprightly lad from Cardiff, refreshingly giddy at the prospect of representing his country at their first ever European Championships.
Such a landmark was riotously celebrated by Welsh fans across the country when qualification was achieved back in October. But with Bale in their side, ably supported by Premier League stars Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and skipper Ashley Williams, expectations have shifted.
No longer are Wales simply content to be involved. Certainly not when their group opponents include England.
Now the Welsh fans believe their once-in-a-generation group of players can go above and beyond anything they've ever achieved in the past, as targets and ambitions skyrocket ahead of the tournament.
The good news for Welsh fans? Their best player agrees with them...
"I’m one of the team. I play for the team, I work as hard as anyone. I run as much as I can. I just enjoy playing for Wales."
