Rio Ferdinand debut: as Premier League sub with Frank Lampard

RIO FERDINAND went on to become a hero for Man Utd making the kind of impact we hope to see from new signing Harry Maguire. But did you know Rio Ferdinand was given his Premier League debut by Harry Redknapp for West Ham United against Sheffield Wednesday, after parading the 1996 SE Counties League trophy with his Class of 96 team-mate Frank Lampard. The duo also helped Hammers reach the FA Youth Cup Final that season, beaten by Liverpool in the 2-legged decider.
When Redknapp sent Ferdinand and Lampard on at Upton Park in a double substitution wonder how many fans thought they would both go on to play for England and win both the Champions League and the Premier League on multiple occasions.
On the day we learn that Wayne Rooney is going to wear the No.32 shirt for Derby County in recognition of a shirt sponsoring betting company, it is interesting to note that Rio wore No.32 when he made his debut back in 1996.

I still remember being almost haunted by Frank’s words from that video after a beer bottle was used in an “inappropriate” manner “if you’re going to do that at least drink it first”. Classy guy.

Rio had a brilliant career as a centre back but also had the potential to become a much better footballer (ie a continental sweeper) than he actually became. Glenn Hoddle has said much the same in a recent interview. Frank is the only one (of those three anyway) who maxed out their potential. You could even argue Carrick underachieved too considering he was underused at international level.
