@shaneonbass8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Klimeš Cheers. The bass sounds OK in passive mode, but definitely not as powerful as in active mode. I'm not using an amplifier for this video - I'm going straight through the Behringer Composer PRO-XL MDX2600 into the Akai EIE Pro USB audio interface - nothing expensive or anything. With my band, I'm using Gallien Krueger 2001RB Head into SWR Goliath Senior 6×10 - you can see this on our video clip we just put up - kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXjSh2yfbcZrsKM

That's professional playing! What's the secret to tapping with your thumb like that... can you do that with any bass or is your action very low or high? When I attack the strings with my thumb I get a lot of fret sound. I can kinda cheat by using a compressor/limiter but it's still not like that. Your sound is even and sounds like all those funky bass lines we know from Flea to the 70's funk stuff. I'm primarily a guitarist...
@shaneonbass10 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! No secret to slapping other than practice I suppose...keep in mind this is a Fender Jazz bass so the tone is pretty awesome from the get go... Sound wise I am running through a Behringer MDX2600 Composer Pro-XL Compressor, primarily to avoid clipping my audio interface, but it does sound pretty cool too.... Bass track is EQ'd in Cubase with a slight boost in the bass and treble regions, nothing very exciting - wish I knew what I was doing then I could get it sounding even better :)
@JohnBarrylizard10 жыл бұрын
ShaneOnBass Thanks for the great info! I did a google search for those pickups, that compressor and the technique. The consensus seems to be pretty low action is ideal for slapping... 2mm-2.5mm at the bass's 3rd highest fret, which would be 17 on a 20 fret bass. Been trying to get that tone for a long time. It's deceptively difficult for me and as a guitarist I tend to play bass like a guitar and ruin the groove. I'm using a boss lm-3 but it adds a lot of hiss. I have an art tube which sound great but adds way too much hiss. Is the MDX2600 quiet? I'm also using Cubase 7.5. If you make a very sharp drop in the 3k to 4k EQ you get a unique tone. I tend to cut anything below 50hz to 100hz for most of my tracks. Maybe I should boost that area and the highs for bass. Thanks again for the insight and great video! Wanna go play my bass now but wife will kill me and it'll wake the baby. :)
@shaneonbass10 жыл бұрын
John Barry Don't wake the baby! What bass are you playing? If you're playing an entry level cheapo bass then getting the ideal tone like a stingray or jazz bass will be impossible, no matter your setup or technique or engineering....as they say, you can't polish a turd!

ShaneOnBass I can play that fluid when I play my Rush Music....But grooving slap the way you do is really cool ! I will work this song out by watching and listening to you ! You play it so naturally..and you are on the ZONE !! I play slap, I really got the technique,I'm able to play triplets or duble thump, but I'm not a natural slap player. I mean I always have hard time to start or create a good groove. I play some Wooten stuff, but still....I love MIller, but It's not easy to play ! Anyway hard work will do the trick ! any advise to improve my slap playing ???

Could you help me out? So im currently learning this song and i am having a difficulty achieving this song when I slap. My bass is a Dean Edge 01 and I am thinking the problem is in my bass. Could you help me figure out this problem?

+Chris Harrison Hey Chris, nothing too crazy going on with the EQ as far as I remember, I am running it through a bit of compression which gives it a nicer tone however - Behringer Composer PRO-XL MDX2600...it sounds even better in my other video with fresh strings on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/romofGt7o92ZqqM You should be able to get the same tone, maybe try some compression!
