i love this video, but personally think the movie wouldve been so much better from claudias persective, not lucy's. but either would have been more intersectional then vivian. i still love this movie and your channel tho!

As a young girl of color I felt that I couldn’t be a riot girl or even a rockstar and with Netflix putting out the moxie movie that had a lot of women of color in the movie it was great but you are right , Netflix definitely should have made Claudia main character and they definitely should have spoken out more about women of color and trans women but the movie is still good .

My sister was a Punk in the '70s, we are from a Jamaican family that lived in the suburbs of London, if she could be a Punk, in the 70's you can be a riot Grrrl now, it's not a fashion it's a lifestyle and you have to be hardcore to be involved. Being non-white in the '70s and '80s was not easy, I personally was into the Mod scene and Ska, so both of us were ostracised from our local black community for not being "Black enough'" but being my authentic self has always been important to me. To me referring to myself as 'a person of colour' only highlights the idea of white supremacy as 'White' is once again seen as the default race, I am a Black person, I originate from the original African human which means anyone non 'Black' is coloured or 'A person of colour' in my eyes. This film is a cheap attempt to change the past, it doesn't work and can only cheapen its intention , just do something new

i didn't know what to think about this movie and you really cleared my thoughts i was really happy to see a movie talking about these issues on netflix but it almost felt like fake intersectionnality (the way they tried to represent the lgbt+ community only by a kiss, a backpack and 2 scenes) It seems like they tried to look inclusive without really being it, we can feel the straight white gaze. You really nailed to explain this, now i feel like my mixed thoughts about the movie are valid thank you !! sorry if my english isn't perfect i'm french

I think the problem with Riot Grrrl is that the theoretical engine is Radical Feminism, which basically says that 'women's oppression is primarily from sex/gender systems' or 'men/males are the principal oppressors of women.' Radical feminism presents a confused and watered down theory of oppression that is actually closed off from conceptualizing oppression of other marginalized groups. For example, they have to think that men are the principal oppressors of black women, or trans people, which leaves oppressive systems under-theorized or worse, reactionary (such as Rowling, Bikini Kill playing at MichFest, SCUM manifesto). Patriarchy is the system that capitalism uses to oppress women (later LGBTQ+). Racism is the system capitalism uses to oppress black/brown people. etc. So you'd need to be a socialist feminist to come up with the correct positions on intersectionality. They were coming up with intersectionality in the late 60s and early 70s (Beal's "Double Jeopardy" and Third World Womens Alliance's "Triple Jeopardy").

somthing else i hated is that they just randomly got to girls to kiss. like its nice to have presentation and stuff but these where to characters that hardly had any chemistry. there where many other chances with characters with way more chemistry, however I believe it was an after throught

Thank you so much for this awesome video! I've been meaning to watch this movie, but your videos bring so much more complex analysis of it into my mind. I've never thought about intersectionality until recently, being a native descendant, latin american lesbian. PS: your effort in the script is noticeable and remarkable. I'm so happy I subscribed some time ago. Much love from Argentina!

I really like your video! I did have the same reaction with the final act, everything is magically solved. But I did enjoyed the movie. It is, as you said, a good start. I feel like I'm missing a lot on feminist theory in general, so I'll be sure to read Moxie and... Any other recommendations?

this video really resonated with me. i liked the movie yes but it’s so like those instagram infographics, “raise minorities voices 🤪🤪” and then doesn’t explain any of the problems any deeper which is so like frustrating. dude just give me this story with anyone else for the main character and it could’ve been better. wow the white girl wants to be punk IVE NEVER SEEN A BROWN PUNK GIRL UNTIL I LIKE LOOKED FOR OME aggressive rambling tiktok alts r always wyte anger

The point of riot girl was to create something that would inspire others to empower themselves, it wasn’t the “Be all and end all”

Such a well-made video. The effort you put into the script really shows. It looks like you stopped creating about a year ago. I hope it was for a positive reason and you are okay. As far as Moxie I completely understand the critique. It's a work of fiction and could have balanced the perspectives and representation in any direction it chose. I don't really understand the critique of the original Riot Grrrl movement. Kathleen Hanna wrote Bikini Kill songs from her own life as a straight white girl. What else could she have done? Riot Grrrl didn't have powerful gatekeepers the way a Hollywood movie does. It was totally DIY. Other voices would have had to start their own bands to represent their lives.
