The problem is that they refuse to do what Smite does, which is make game modes that simply tweak one or two things, like a Yordle-only champ select, or Shadow Isles vs sentinels, or a mode that just gives you max gold immediately. Just getting these same game modes makes them boring.
@Pedropaulopoloni3 жыл бұрын
those smite game modes were the good shit, man. That and the daily missions. When Riot said they were going to add mission to League I was so hyped because I thought it would be like in Smite, small objectives that I can go and complete everyday, but then they made mission tied to events, and most of them are just ''do big number of damage/dragons/takedowns'' it was a huge disappointment.
The problem with current urf is Riot only ever releases it alongside an event with a pass you can buy to get points for wins, to eventually get a prestige skin. This is giving every sweatlord a literal monetary incentive to just pick the OP meta champs to push out games as fast as possible to hit 2k points and get the prestige skin.

URF nowdays is bad, because META gaming exist: When urf got released for the first time people were excited about new game mode and possibilities it would bring in to gameplay. they would experiment with champions on a whole different levels like going tryndamere AP, full AS Naulthilius and many more, it was fun because it was new and there wasn't any guides how to play. Now with META and tier lists people instead of wanting to try new things for fun, they look up what's the strongest and has most win-ratio, because they don't want to play something that has 10% WR they want to win, and dying is not fun. And because of that every lobby is full of Yi, Zed, Malphite, Yuumi, Ezreals that offer little for actual engaging and fun gameplay but rather spam all skills and get kills.

But they won't, because that requires effort, and RIOT made it clear that they are not gonna put any effort into even small things if it won't result in potentially tons of revenue. They're focused on making a game that gets a lot of publicity, wether that be through fancy skins, world championships, exciting new champs, etc. All of those will result in play spikes and revenue. So, to make it clearer, the notion of players seeking the most effective playstyle to maximise their performance IS a well known and well documented game design concept called "Dominant Strategy". It doesn't matter at all what game it is, how competitive or how casual it is, it doesn't even matter if it's a single-player game. The reason people repeatedly dodge-roll when they're talking around in Ocarina of Time is not because it's fun, but because it is literally just faster than running, so players will gravitate towards doing it, and those that don't often have to actively prevent themselves from doing it. This is why experienced designers extensively test their games personally, because this is the type of thing the majority of people (at an individual level) are very unlikely to catch onto, or otherwise, are very unlikely to realize that it's going to be abused at all. Riot was wrong to implement a way for characters to be entirely broken, and their attempt to fix it was randomizing that, so that players aren't free to pursue dominant strategy. The hilarious result of this is that players will still find it anyway, only it feels undeserved since the lack of character choice makes some players feel like their inability to counterpick a broken URF iteration is "unfair" -- and balance-wise, lol, I guess it is! This doesn't add or detract from the video, I just thought fellow game design enthusiasts would enjoy that! : )

They should just bring back that 2nd or 3rd iteration of URF where the top 5-10 played/banned champs were just banned from the game mode after the first week. Like, go back to put it just for a weekend a year and bring back the others. People will be forced to play for fun rather than win because: are you really gonna put effort in having an optimal build for just 3 days? Jesus Christ, pls stop blaming players for Rito's fault of having dogshiet game design philosophy and stripping this game out of the fun aspect. If people tryhard, it means that there is something wrong with the game on the fundamental level. It's not the players fault that they play the way developers want them to play - it's the developers fault for making a game that's whole fvckin purpose is tryharding. This is what they have been taught for the last 8 years or so. >Don't play troll builds! >Don't play new picks on ranked! >Look what pro players build and copy their builds! >Here are recommended items for you so you won't sweat figuring out which color is for which stat! >We will reduce the numbers of items by inventing mythics so you will have to figure out only one correct item for the champ, because there's like 5 or 6 other items for this class, so you won't build anything that we haven't predicted! >People don't play this item because it's weak? We should delete it because some players may want to build it in order to troll on rankeds! >Look! I never comment on KZbin videos, but I've been playing league since almost the beginning, and I agree with most of you here. Players (especially overly competitive ones) drain the fun out of casual games, or game modes in case of URF, and determine the viability of other casual modes, like Doom Bots (which was phenomenal beyond belief) and other League maps that had a lot of player-input in entertainment. In Dominion, a lot of people (myself included) used to play customs and go play hide and seek, and it was the most entertaining moments we've ever had. The thing is, URF tends to suffer from depending on a competitive architecture for a casual game mode, so a solution I might think is, to remove most of the competitive aspects that are instilled in URF, like turrets and lanes, where nowadays there's always someone splitpushing an entire match and ruining the fun for most people in there, by losing teamfights for their team or forcing someone to stop them. Maybe make and URF-exclusive map or an evolving summoners rift, where, as the game drags along, slowly force players into a 5v5, or split teams, mix it up to a point where players are enticed to play with others rather than winning. I dunno, big rambling. TLDR: URF depends on a competitive structure, so players tend to morph the casual aspect of it in search of efficiency, so either remove said aspects, or control them to a point where they lose their allure for competitive players, so they focus on having fun rather than winning worthless wins.

I think another problem is that champions nowadays are just so overloaded and insanely strong that you're used to them dominating your ranked games and now you have to deal with an even stronger version of them in URF.
@fallendeus3 жыл бұрын
Except that a lot of the strongest champs in urf arent the newer ones.. the top 10 champions based on winrate in urf right now are (in order) kayle (63.5% wr), annie, sona, seraphine, lulu, ahri, fizz, woking, nami, and volibear (58.5% wr). Almost all of those are old champions that may have gotten some buffs over time (voli and kayle got reworked) but yeah they aren't "new champs with overloaded kits". @TheKalnu3 жыл бұрын
I think it's more than that, for example: Jhin Jhin was strong in the first/second urf, but recently he's been so incredibly infuckingsane. You can't really outplay him because he gets SO much movement speed in urf, he can go from base to the middle of the map and back. He can weave in - auto you - and weave out before you can even react. Not to mention this auto is more than likely to simply kill you in one hit even if you are a tank. He's pretty much oneshot me when I've had 5k health. Jinx, MF, Ashe, Lucian, Twitch, Kog and Xayah are like this too - but they don't have the insane movement speed steroid to kite you as easily with so they can be easier to deal with if you can get into them. I saw Jhin, Jinx, Ashe, etc being played in the first/second urf but it was nothing like it is right now. The current meta of just... insane burst has made Urf honestly ... not that fun. I don't know if it's runes, items, or a combination of both - because the burst in normals/ranked is pretty crazy too. Rengar, Lee Sin, etc can just kill you in under a second while building tank items. Usually, you don't get to see ADCs "burst" because they are sustained damage (and weak to burst), and games often end before the ADC really gets going. I perma-ban Jhin because every time I left him through, I am going to be faced against one. Some urf games are fun but most just... aren't because you can't really react to a lot of situations. A hecarim coming ar 50000 miles an hour with a Yuumi is going to weave in and out of you without you so much being able to auto him until you die - until he gets to the point where the single weave will oneshot you. There aren't enough bans but banning everyone isn't fun, either. I think putting a cap on movement speed and trying to address the insane burst would help urf (and Normals)

As someone who plays 400+ URF/ARURF games everytime it returns and played every iteration of URF and is having a blast: You always have tryhards. You always have people picking Zed/Fizz whatever. And there are URF balance changes to make OP characteres less insane, and trash characteres at least somewhat playable, but my main point is: URF, like regular league, is not worth playing by yourself. Get into a group with 4-5 friends, and just play and try out whacky shit. You can ensure that you have 5 quality bans, and then just play whatever the hell you want. A few examples just today: - We played sniper comps and oneshot champions across the map. - We created our own base inside the enemy base with Ivern/Teemo, Nasus/Veigar for scaling and Soraka for sustain and just lived inside of their base as long as possible with a billion blue trinkets as fence. - Everyone who watched Darkkmane knows his fishing technique, and we just sat with our whole team in a single bush and placed as much bait (wards/blue trinket) as possible around it and kill everyone who got close. We even invited some of them into our VIP club and had dance parties. And all of those were just today, 3 games out of 250 just this month. If you clearly do not enjoy league anymore, URF won't fix that.

This is literally the reason why I can't stick with online card games. When professional players are putting some of the best decks online and you can netdeck, it takes a lot of the custom deckbuilding fun out of the game. Not so much because you lose a bunch, if you're a Johnny player (see: relies on a niche splashy combo that rarely comes together) losing a bunch is normal. But what sucks is when you're seeing just the same strategies over and over and over again, and the only way to go against it is to do the OTHER big super-strong meta thing. Most of the cards now just become worthless because you are stuck playing against random people online that will more likely than not be using said netdecks. This is why I haven't even touched URF this time around. Honestly, I'd love to see them just make a custom game mode that's Ultimate Spellbook without the spellbook. The core League gameplay that was just plain sped up (but not to URF levels) let the game feel like you were jumping into the action super quick, while still having the core League experience that felt like most if not all of the champions were viable.

This is a big frustration with league that I tend to have, that some characters just Aren’t Good and so if you really like that champion, you’re doomed to fight uphill battles only for all time. A little imbalance is typically in my favor, I find it really boring when i just stomp a game (and even moreso when i’m playing average and my team just demolishes the other, ‘cause they surrender and steal my satisfaction), but I’ve come to really feel that unless every character in the game is equally viable under ideal circumstances, your game is balanced incorrectly. Urf i think can be allowed to be solved, it’s the ha ha funny meme gamemode and i really think it’s a player-side problem with mindset, not a dev-side problem with design. If you’re going into urf with winning on your mind instead of fucking around and having fun doing a meme like one-click one-shot veigar, Stage Hazard singed, or I Play Teemo As A Ward, you’ve already lost sight of the point.

Yeah, this is definitely the issue. I don't understand why people just play boring, uninteractive (albeit very "good") champs and builds in URF. The gamemode is so nuts that it's far more fun to just play weird, dumb shit that couldn't be possible in any other gamemode. One of my favorite things to play in URF is The Fast Jhin, or AD Blitzcrank. They might not be "good" but I don't really care, it's a stupid gamemode that exists just for fun. Normal League exists for people who wanna develop a meta because at least that's an actual strategy game and not just an exercise in goofing off. Now, there's a discussion to be had on playing unfun meta champs over ones that one personally likes playing the most, but that's a totally different one. Let's just say there's a reason one of my most-played champs is Teemo. He sure as hell isn't meta, but at the end of it all, it's a game, and I have the most fun when I play him.

I wanna play goofy champs but the game mode has become too toxic in its implementation. PLEASE BRING BACK HEXAKILL

I remember playing OFA years ago and had fun games like All Master Yi and All Ivern. Now it was nothing but Lux, Morgana, etc. League players complain the game is growing less fun yet they subject themselves and others to this soulless bullshit.

It's the players that do this to themselves. So many are too worried about winning or losing. So many only find enjoyment in league when they're doing well and not enough in the game's base mechanics.

I love URF sooooo much and I used to enjoy normals as well. I’m not the best player int her world, and I sure as hell dont want to play a casual mode in a competitive game against smurfs and people who sweat in them. It’s so sad to see such a fun mode be destroyed by people not realizing that them winning a game isn’t gonna make their pp larger and it’s not worth ruining the fun for others. I haven’t played league in a year or two, came back when ultimate spellbook was ending, played for like 5 days in norms and considered deleting league, only kept it for rotating modes. I was so happy to see urf come out, and then I met the same problem, sweat, smurf, and like the man himself said “Metagaming”. I just don’t understand why people want to ruin the fun for others so much. I don’t need to win a game to have fun, but I don’t wanna be 1 shot by a hecarim going mach speed at me, or getting feared from corner to corner by shaco boxes. Games aren’t bad, their communities are

Urf use to be fun, now there's a clear meta and everyone knows it so barely anyone plays it to just have fun. It's basically just as toxic as any old summoners rift game and people only ever try hard in it I'm all about the one for all bard games though
@wolfy80063 жыл бұрын
As a bard main, I love to go half tank/bruiser bard in urf, literally unkillable and they chase u all across the map. Sad thing is I couldn’t figure out a good build path for bard since the item changes.
@JonnyfromElma3 жыл бұрын
I'm confused by how "tryhard" is used nowadays. When you play league, do you just never attack the opponent? Refuse to ward on purpose? INTing maybe? Where is the line drawn between simply playing a game where the objective is to win, and trying too hard to win in a game where the objective is to win? How do you know if someone is actually just playing for fun and just happens to be good? Or their favorite champ is Zed and it's fun to spam his skills in URF? Is it toxicity that makes the difference? Maybe not TRYING to win, but caring too much. Careharding, if you would. Multi-player games where you play against others have always been this way. What does tryharding really even mean?

I don't get this because like. Yes a meta exist. A meta exists for everything. ARAM has a meta, URF has a meta, Normal League has a meta, TFT has a meta. It doesn't matter. The thing is you can literally play URF without adhering to the meta. When I play URF I literally just hit random and play whoever I get and still win 60% of my matches.
@JonnyfromElma3 жыл бұрын
@@garethjones209 so then playing meta champs isn't tryharding? Most of them are really fun to play in URF.

A smart man once said: "Given the opportunity, a player will optimize the fun out of the game." This happens to every single 0 sum game in the entire planet. People have developed strategies for Tic-Tac-Toe, for christ's sake. Competitive gaming of any kind is only fun as long as you're willing to play the exact same thing over and over again, with just about more chance to lose than actually win. And that's stretching the definition of "fun" VERY much. That's why I disagree with the current logic for most games' "standard" modes. It's usually just ranked, but without the ranks and points. You're still playing exclusively to win, there are rewards attached, be they XP or something else. Leave standard for the true casuals, remove rewards altogether, no matter what they could be. If my base gets destroyed, or my entire team gets killed, give me a victory screen at the end of the match anyway. I understand that I/my team lost, but I'm not penalized in any way. I'm not here to win, I'm here to play. That way people that want to win no matter the cost move on to ranked/competitive, the jank players stay in standard/non-competitive. Edit: if someone finds it in themselves to answer this with "then what would be the point of playing non-ranked?", you just found out what queue is right for you AND the answer to that question.
@chillaxboi21093 жыл бұрын
I'd say removing rewards is a bit extreme. I don't play normals nor ranked. Just ARAMS and... Tft now😭😔 but anyways. I'd say that improving significantly the rewards for the ranked experience would also help. It make people play harder even more so when there are actual good prizes along the way
@hitlord3 жыл бұрын
@@chillaxboi2109 I thought of that too, my other suggestion would be to give equal rewards no matter which side you were, but that seemed like too good of a system. And if you give rewards, but it's better to the winning team, it instantly toxifies non-ranked queues.

Crazy idea: Before releasing URF, Riot puts out a survey where you can pick 5 champs that you never want to play against in URF. They permaban the top 10-20 champs from that survey. Then, magically... You (the player) don't have to worry about people not banning OP champs.

For some reason, there is balance in urf. Example: in Zilean's Q, the description says that he has 2 seconds cooldown, but in reality he has 4 seconds because yes, same with Kassadin (kinda understandable). But then Morgana can perma cc you not even with max Q and Akali do infinite damage with the Q (like 0.1 cooldown).
