I knew they would win. It makes sense lore wise if they were to attack Nelson and risk sustaining casualties and have to worry about the hostages. NCR greatest advantage here was creating a line of fire with the service rifles.

The reason they were losing in the story is because of overextension, better strategic planning by their opponents, the more highly trained soldiers of the legion and successful sneak attacks. In the long run, they were less susceptible to attrition than the Legion, particularly after Ceasar’s death.

@@Andrewbaysura1 indeed, most of the soldiers in the Mojave are either new recruits sent to the meat grinder and tired veterans that just want to go home. Also most of the rangers aren't doing actual ranger work, forgot which one of them complain about that

I mean, would you? The NCR, in it's recent (by New Vegas) history, has fought the brotherhood of steel, a faction who regularly fields soldiers with T45 and T51 power armour, the very best of pre war tech, literal tanks. The only reason they won is the brotherhood's very small numbers were overstretched protecting Hidden Valley, HELIOS One *and* keeping an open route between them Beforehand, they fought the enclave, literally the US government armed with the very best technology, including the X-01 Advanced Power Armour, a post war development, only winning because of the Chosen One's influence Caesar's Legion, on the other hand, is nothing but a glorified, oversized raiding tribe, armed with big knives and the odd (looted from pre war stocks) grenades and some hunting rifles, armoured with American football gear at best

@@jamesmortimer4016 i mean by thr end you can see the ncr *actually* putting in the effort deploying more rangers, heavy troopers... So whereas at the start the legion is the one holding the advantage in numbers, as the legion considers the mojave, new Vegas and Hoover dam their greatest future conquest, they've mobilised their whole empire onto the dam, but the ncr considers the mojave just another one of many frontier campaigns against bandits. they realise by the mid game that maybe the mojave deserves more attention and security than John with the rifle that his dad looted off an enclave armory half a century ago, but you don't see that increased security until the attempt on Kimball/ fight over hoover dam because they can enter the mojave through a grand total of one (1) roads, so they can't just march 10.000 rangers since they'll starve without the needed provisions

no, they do, If anything taking them TOO seriously is why Legion is creeping and getting stronger. Oliver is constantly mocked by the NCR press and troops as general wait-and-see because he won't actually move out against the Legion and is content to hold while their supply lines get dwindled. It's pretty telling that one of the earliest quests you can do in Nipton is demoralizing the NCR garrison in Mojave Outpost and Ghost confirming for herself that the NCR is screwed.

You're correct, the legion outnumbers the NCR militarily, the legion also controls the majority of the 4 corners which is more land than New California in its entirety so they also most likely have a much larger population than the entire New California Republic.

Well this is kinda exaggerated, the Legion has way more intense training than the NCR, but the NCR had better equipment. Not to mention how the legion sends out Recruit Legionaries with terrible armor and weapons out at the guys with guns and body armor, they get bodied quite quickly. Plus recruits make up a large portion of Legion’s army and smaller divisions like battalions, squads and such. But yes this was pretty much expected. I bet if most of the enemy they fought were Centurions, Veteran Decanus they probably could’ve lost.

Fun fact: This is the weakest state that the NCR forces at Forlorn Hope could possibly be. No "Morale" buffs, no First Recon, and early game MP Troopers instead of NCR Veteran Rangers and Heavy Troopers which start showing up late game.

Near End game ncr replaces military police troopers with heavy troopers and hunting rifle troops with NCR vet rangers so this should be taken into account that when you stumble across them will vary their strength.Also other quests can affect the strength of camp for Lauryn Hill example whether the spotters are there or Lieutenant Hayes, etc. Also the NCR troopers between novac and Nelson. I know aren’t a part of camp for Lauren hope but I mean they’re kind of a part of the battle of Nelson

The NCR should win most straight-up battles, their problem is their leadership. Not just their high command like Kimball and Oliver who are making them overextend but just every officer in their army who all seems to have gotten their post through nepotism or money rather than competence. Hanlon is the only competent officer that they have. And I'm sure some of you will say: ''Hey Tsu is competent too'' but no. Tsu is nice and likable. He is not in any way shape or form competent. The guy keeps losing soldiers left and right to a bunch of addicts because he keeps sending small patrols of two or three men into their territory and he sent his best ranger alone into Vault 3 to assassinate Motor Runner as if anyone, even a veteran ranger, could somehow sneak past people in the small corridors of a Vault. When you have such a big advantage over your enemy, trying to engage in small skirmishes and special operations instead of just overwhelming them isn't smart. It's cowardly. Tsu is so afraid of losing against the Fiends that he simply won't try to engage them in a large-scale battle even though anyone should be able to see that it's a battle he'd win easily. And he'd win it with much fewer casualties than what he's facing with his current strategy.
