Feels to me like the environment file loading would be more natural if done in the opposite order (general env properties followed by specialized env subset e.g. for debug).

I read about it yesterday and also excited about new features. Now it also supports ES6 modules

node v20 introduced the --env-file flag but its neat that they're taking it a step further with the loadEnvFile function. i think these changes will lower the need of dotenv but i dont think it'll replace it completely. reason being that dotenv has plugins such as dotenv-expand and what not. however, there could be a possibility that node ends up replacing those as well.

hm I am unsrure, if you want to load more than just one .env file as this will lead to much trouble as variables will be overwritten in sort of including the envs

I recently started using dotenvx though, which depends on dotenv, so most likely dotenv will continue? Or maybe they'll remove the dotenv dependency in newer releases.

dotenvx definitely has added value! I've been using "dotenv-cli" for this, seems pretty much identical. Thanks for letting me know, I'll check it out.

So node wont load them based on the running env but i have to do it manually

Oh my god I can't believe they're setting the override priority of imported env variables in the wrong order. Everything has to be ass backwards in web development, that's why it's a joke, even things they are doing to improve the state of things in 2024 still done with maximum incompetence.
