In my 74 years, the hardest things I've done was to put my dogs to sleep. In my 52 years of marriage, my wife and I have been through this 4 times. It never gets easier. We talk about each of them and remember their cute ways. You will always have those memories. I shared tears with you just now. Being a dog owner I realized that all dogs share a soul.......your next dog will have a little bit of Gus in him. I have a Dachshund here in Hawaii and we met a WWII vet who served here in Hawaii and saved Dachshunds and bred them back in the 40s my dog hopped in his lap and I watch this vet start crying cuz my dog reminded him of his 1st dachshund. This man went though Pearl Harbor and WWII and what made him cry was his long lost dog. What is amazing is my dachshund my very well be related to his since her line has been in Hawaii since WWII. So if an WWII vet can cry over a dog is ok for all of us

The day my wife passed away from cancer the house was filled with sad friends and family. I saw my dog lose it and he was so sad I rushed him to the vet because I thought he was going to die too. I was like no not you too. The vet saw him and she said that ge was just grieving to. Dogs are amazing companions. I still have him and don't look forward to the day he departs from me.

Only time I ever saw my dad cry was when we put one of our dogs to sleep. The only time. Not when my mom died or any other time. Three grown men - my dad, the Doctor, and me - standing around crying. I'll never forget it. Breast cancer led to a stroke and that was the end of a 12 year relationship. My last dog I knew it was coming for years. Cancer, surgeries, chemo, etc.. I dug the grave in the backyard. Took pictures of her with my son. Held her, slept next to her, had my family say their goodbyes. Two shots by the vet to the heart is what it took. I didn't cry. I held it together for her and brought her home. I visit her grave frequently to just sit and enjoy the outdoors. I miss her everyday. 15 years. She was special to none of you reading this but she was special to me. Jeff, don't apologize for your feelings. They're real and valid. You and Gus shared that specialness. Think about all those wonderful times. You were blessed to have each other.

I am sorry for your loss Jeff, I had to putt two of my dogs down 6 months apart 2 years ago. After them going everywhere with me for 14 years it really hurts. Alcohol and being numb is just going to push off the grieving process. Never drink when your sad or down. Remember and talk about the good times. Not any time soon, but eventually it gets easier. I went through a similar traumatic night with my cat of 19 years. Got him when I was 5 for Christmas. He was my best friend. He ended up experiencing a rapid deterioration of neurological function. He had several seizures throughout the night. They were so incredibly hard to witness. I could see his pain. I sat on our couch with him in my arms all night long until the vet opened in the morning. 12 hours. Thinking about it almost 3 years later is still very difficult. Hang in there.

Sorry for your loss man. I had to put my 12 year old English bulldog to sleep a week ago. I know exactly how you feel and it was one of the hardest things I've done. WE had so many memories together. His name was Bruce. This guy literally used to run 3, 4, 5, & even 6 miles with me (I know, hard to believe for an English bulldog)! He was a lean grumpy beast with a lot of unconditional love from my wife and I. None the less, he was family. Hang in there because it will get better if you celebrate the good times.
