The Pistons went halfway around the world to find Darko. The Lions missed on Tom Brady who was 30 miles down the road at U of M. It really hurts to be a Detroit sports fan sometimes.

I've been an NBA Fan since the late sixties as a little kid and was more wrong on Darko than anyone before or since. But, you never know what a guy has between the ears or shoulder blades sometimes. He had the physical talent to be a pretty good player, and I wonder if he wasn't ruined by riding the bench the first 3, or 4 seasons, and just ruined his confidence.

I understand why they skipped on melo and wade, they had rip, who was still relatively young at the time, and Prince singlehandedly shut down t-mac to keep them in the playoffs the year before. But if you wanted a big man why ignore Bosh. Darko looked great in practice and workouts, but he was a 10mpg player in Serbia and had yet to prove himself over there. Detroit generally screws up on draft night though.

Besides Carmelo being available in that draft, they could have chosen Dwayne Wade or Chris Bosh as well. They just beat the Lakers in the Finals in 5 games and with the 2nd overall pick in the draft they were set up to build a mini dynasty. But with that pick they ruined that opportunity. What a shame.

LOL The dumbest draft pick, in the history of sports! But those punk Pistons were able to trade for Rasheed Wallace, and beat my Lakers in the 2004 Finals! It still hurts.

It shouldn't hurt that bad man. Those Pistons you're talking about won only one title while the Lakers won 2, one against the Magic and a revenge win against the Celtics, in the succeeding years.

Pistons fans were so delusional back then about Darko. I remember back around 2004-2005 I used to tell them that they made a mistake passing up on Carmelo for Darko, but they kept saying "He's going to get better; he needs to get comfortable with the NBA" and yadda yadda yadda. But year after year he continued to not put up anything close to impressive numbers and they kept saying it will take time. Never mind the fact that LeBron was already doing well his first year in the NBA. Kobe sucked his first year but at least showed potential, and by his second year he made the All-Star team. I believe Michael Jordan made the All-Star team his first year. So it's ridiculous to say that a future great player needs several years before he will become good. Great players usually show promise within their first or second season.

Kobe didn't suck his first year, he didn't get playing time. Back when Kobe started playing, that's how things worked, rookie's didn't start unless they were First or 2nd pick unlike in this pussified league nowadays.

rusty111fire I think that was just Del Harris' little rule of not starting rookies -- other coaches probably had the same rule but many rookies started... Michael Jordan started his rookie year (and he was the third pick). But remember when Kobe airballed all those 3 pointers in the playoffs against the Jazz his rookie year and lost the game... Kobe wasn't playing at all-star levels his first year.

DiverseLA Nope, that's how the League worked back then, Charles Barkley was one of the top picks in his draft, but he didn't start his first season, even though he was putting up good numbers. Kobe airballed those 3's, but Shaq said that at the time he was the only one who had the guts to take the shot and it's kind of sad he was put into that position, he was just a rookie after all. For all we know, those airballs are what motivated him into working harder and become the player he is now.

DiverseLA And MJ started because they had nobody on their team, he was literally their best player his rookie year, also MJ was older and more experienced than Kobe his 1st year, MJ played in the NCAA, Kobe was 17 when he got drafted straight out of high school.

I could see people thinking he was going to get better. He was only 17. Also Jermaine O'Neal took 4years for his career to take off

If the pistons draft melo that would’ve made him and lebron rivals imagine the cavs vs pistons in the playoffs every year ... melo’s career might’ve went different also I mean he’s a hall of famer for sure but he might have a couple of rings a couple mvp’s and been a lot better on defense
