The big question mark that everyone seems to be forgetting is, do we know for certain that the Pistons would have still acquired Rasheed Wallace later in the year if they drafted Carmelo? Part of the reason they traded to get Rasheed Wallace was because Darko flopped so bad. If the draft pick that they made in Carmelo ended up working out there's a good chance they'd never end up feeling pressured to trade for Rasheed. And even with Carmelo, the Pistons don't end up winning a single ring without Rasheed Wallace on that team during those 2 seasons they made it to the finals. Rasheed was instrumental for them to get over the hump.
@elliemyers64353 жыл бұрын
This really is the million dollar question. I love Melo, and he absolutely would have helped the Pistons during that time, but, Rasheed Wallace REALLY is what took the Pistons from "pretty good" to Contenders in 2004. He just fit them perfectly, and was the missing piece to the championship puzzle. So, do the Pistons still acquire Sheed if they have Melo? I really don't know. I want to say yes, but I really have no idea.

Exactly my point. The two teams matched up very well. It was up to who'd play better melo or Kobe and Melo sucked *** in 3 of those games. If he would have played like he played game 1 of that series the Nuggets would have won. Melo just couldnt do it. Consistency.

One of the biggest reasons Detroits defense was so great was because of Lindsay Hunter the greatest on ball harassing point guard I ever saw when he was with the Pistons, and Mike James who was sort of like a free safety at the guard position with Lindsay

Nah, I love Melo and I was a fan of the bad boy Pistons 2.0 but that would have been bad chemistry. The Pistons were a hard nosed team and Melo was a pretty selfish player even as a rookie. The Pistons weren't a favorite to win back then and it took a lot of work to get them there in the first place. One entitled rookie taking up minutes could have messed all that up. Even if Detroit wins it with Melo, Melo would either take a smaller role and not become a star, or would have had too much success early and become lazy and donut shaped like he did in NYC. Melo, my man, Denver was good for you and yall had some playoff success too. You got impatient and wanted the money too and that's on you not on some fate or a draft pick.

I would like to correct history, I lived in Michigan during the time that the pistons drafted Darko over Carmelo Anthony. What I distinctly remember is that when the pistons tried to scheduled a workout with Carmelo Anthony, he refused to come in for a work-up. I also remember the fact that Darko was on the cover of sports illustrated that year, and it appeared that most general managers would have drafted Darko over Carmelo. My biggest criticism of Joe Dumars, was him drafting Mateen Cleeves in the first round of a previous year.

2007 when LeBron went off against Detroit may have turned out differently. If you have a scorer like Melo maybe he can get a few buckets to help them stop that onslaught. And Bron having to defend Melo maybe doesn't have the juice to pull it off. That would have been the moment I'd love to see Melo on the Pistons. Just to see how different it was.

As a great as Melo is, there is no way they would’ve won the title with Melo in 04. They probably wouldn’t have traded for Rasheed Wallace during the season, and their defense would not have been the same. They might have won a ring at some point, but, Rasheed Wallace put them over the top.

Lot of people forget Melo’s rookie year, the Pistons didn’t have Rasheed Wallace till later on that season when they traded for him. If they would’ve drafted Melo, than they probably would’ve never traded for Wallace because Prince played the 3 and with Melo being a great rookie player they would’ve played him at the 4. But we’ll never know. My favorite what if is, what if Tracy Mcgrady and Vince Carter never left Toronto… later on adding Bosh.

My Pistons wasn't same after they drafted Darko over Melo. We had the chance to draft all time great talent and cement more championships in the lore of Piston and NBA history. Instead, we're STILL struggling to draft, trade AND keep actual talent, recruit free agents (mainly because the majority don't want to live in a small market like Detroit), or even compete for a conference title, LET ALONE an NBA title. The decisions that was made that draft day ACTUALLY destroyed a long lasting championship run for the Pistons and a chance for Melo to get a ring EARLY in his career.

Forgetting one very key detail: Larry Brown wasn't fond of playing rookies/young players. Darko had promise but playing 34 games and 5mins his rookie season, then 37 games and 7mins the next didn't help his development at all. Larry Brown also coached team USA in '04 and played Lebron 11mins, Amare 7 and Melo 7. Yeah Melo would've won a chip in 04, but no guarantees he develops into the player we eventually got.
@back2back3793 жыл бұрын
There's a reason why Dumars didn't want to draft Melo, because he, Larry Brown, and the core team members knew the kind of player Melo was, a ball-stopper who restricts ball movement as well as a subpar defender. Larry Brown was also notorious for not wanting to play rookies, so they didn't want chemistry issues due to clashing between Larry Brown and Melo, and the clashing would likely have happened with Melo seeing his draft classmates like Lebron and Wade getting playing time and being focal points of their respective teams while Melo would have had to sit on the bench much more.

Melo changed his own course by not making sacrifices for greatness. He had a scorer first mentality in Denver. Moved to NY and had another scorer's mentality. Had a chance to join up Lebron and Wade and instead went for the money. And then after NY made comments about not being willing to come off the bench. His career is a story of someone who has made mistakes after mistakes and only in the last couple of years with Portland has he really started to really focus on winning rather than looking good.
