Bassist Jet Black studied classical guitar, so he is an accomplished musician. Dave Greenfield use to tune pianos for his father's piano shop, so he was an accomplished musician, and Jet Black in his younger years was a jazz drummer also he was an accomplished musician. Hugh Cornwell was taught by another guitarist when he already knew some basic guitar chords. As far confrontational goes, The Stranglers did get into quite a few fights. Especially Jean Jacques Burnel who happens to have some Black Belts in Karate, and he did opened up his own Karate Dojo. Hugh Cornwell also did some fighting as well in pubs and nightclubs. Not too sure if Dave Greenfield and Jet Black got into any fights during those years.

Nice tribute to Jet/Brian, thank you. He's off to join the amazing keyboards of Dave Greenfield who we lost fairly recently also. Jet's drums were always on point in an understated but crucial manner a little akin to Charlie Watts. Take care dudes.

Given that Trotsky and Lenin are name checked in the song it is quite political. Also Sancho Panza is Don Quixote's loyal servant in Cervantes' novel of the same name. In context of late 1970's Britain it's a relevant song. Think I saw some stills of Tony Hancock on the video, total 1950's radio comedy hero!

Great song! Even though The Stranglers rode in on the punk wave they were never really a punk band. They wrote very clever pop songs more atuned with bands like XTC and Squeeze. They and their management were very astute in being able to market the image in one camp and produce big hits in the other. 😎
@normandavidtidiman9918
@normandavidtidiman9918 Жыл бұрын
Even as a Squeeze fan and some XTC records,there’s no comparison with the Stranglers. Even the Pistols wrote “popular” (pop) songs,does that mean they weren’t punk? The Stranglers probably had the biggest punk attitude of all the groups at that time. Who were and weren’t “punk” is very much open to the individual fan I think.
@theobjectivethinker64
@theobjectivethinker64 Жыл бұрын
@@normandavidtidiman9918 Exactly I was there, the Stranglers were very much Punk at the beginning before they were signed. Fights with Pistols and the Clash and others saw them ostracised to some degree so they went there own way as Punk became commercialised.
@kadiummusic
@kadiummusic Жыл бұрын
@@normandavidtidiman9918 I'm talking musically, as a musician. You simply can't compare the songwriting and musicianship of the Stranglers with The Sex Pistols or their ilk. Madness used to fight with everyone too, doesn't make them punk either. People always confuse the music with the fashion. Nothing wrong with being mainstream, thats were the money was. The cute thing is to keep onside with the hardcore fans while selling to the masses. The Stranglers did it perfectly, and they, unlike most of the genuine punk bands, had the gumption and the talent to do it. Clever.
@MrBritGrit
@MrBritGrit Жыл бұрын
@@theobjectivethinker64 The Stranglers were pub rock ...74 to 76 and punk rock was really born out of the pistols and the kings road lot the Stranglers had their own following Finchley boys ....as everyone was playing the pub rock circuit at that time including bands like dire straits etc...The Stranglers were sought of swept along...This how I remember it...
@theobjectivethinker64
@theobjectivethinker64 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBritGrit That is true to a point, but not quite how it all happened. The Pistols, and the Clash owe a lot to the Stranglers who happened organically it is well documented they were fans along with the Damned too and would go and see them. They were all part of a pub scene. The pistols often played on the same venues and the same nights with the Stranglers, Punk was a label which was media driven and did not truly explain the beginnings. Infighting saw them distance themselves as the new orthodoxy took hold. I am talking about a very small window where they were all aligned without the hype or the label PUNK.

Little side tale on behalf of Dave Greenfield, their organist. Dave had a resteraunt business towards the end of his life. Dave also raised pet rats. Pet rats and inspectors don't mix so Dave usually roped some members of the public into hiding them from the inspectors when they came calling looking for said rats. Dave was an original member of The Stranglers and of the punk scene. Punk was about people power and helping each other and fighting authority. Dave Greenfield. You absolute bloody legend m8. RIP to Jet Black and Dave Greenfield. Another two legends gone. See you both someday guys.

The Heroes :'- Leon Trotsky- exiled communist leader who opposed Stalin and paid with his life Dear Old Lenny ' Lenny Bruce - no holes barred New York Comedian The Great Elmyra - notorious Art forger who sold 1000's of old masters to unwary collectors. Sancho Panzer - Don Quixote's sane companion in the book who relies on reality over delusion. The songs Heroes are in fact anti-Heroes, people who defied rule, law or social norms and did it their own way. In song by song a book by the Guitarist singer Hugh Cornwell, it's a call to rely on yourself, not to hope for a Hero to save you there are No More Heroes anymore..

I wouldn't be too bothered about trying to tie up the song to the video. It's probably not the original video. I'm fairly sure it wasn't Lou Reed you saw being arrested but J.J Burnell the Stranglers bassist. P.S It would be great if you could play a tune by 999. They were around at the same time as The Stranglers and like The Stranglers were far more musically accomplished than most other punk bands of the time. If you do get to play one, I suggest the following: Emergency, Titanic Reaction or Feeling alright with the crew. These are there three best known songs.
