If I could only listen to one band the rest of my life it would be Russell Smith and the Amazing Rythm Aces, been a fan since 1975. Thanks for all the great music

I agree. One of the greatest least known bands ever. They did an amazing variety of musical styles so well. I just re-listened to their latin version of Ashes of Love, I'd forgotten how well they did it along with so many other great recordings.

Living in Europe most of my life I never got to see the Amazing Rhythm Aces though I played their LP’s incessantly in the 70’s and 80’s. I hope nobody sent flowers after he died as he expressed the wish that he wanted them whilst he was living. I play Geneva’s Lullaby from Toucan Do It Too all the time. Rest in peace Russell and thank you for the great music.

Absolutely loved his music. If I had a dollar for every time I listed to Too Stuffed To Jump or sang one of their songs... Great band!

As a singer and songwriter, no one better; The Aces were too good to fit into a sing category, and unfortunately that is you had to do in the seventies and eighties (the days when AM radio decided if you were to be a star.....). Also, shout out to Byrd Burton, the perfect guitar player for The Aces. I mention Russell in a a song I recorded titled "X Song" where I list the 8 greatest songwriters in my world, and he is one of them.

I saw Russell with the Aces in Laramie, Wyoming in 1978-79ish? I was blown away by his / their performance and his song writing, and I'm not even ino country music. Coincidentally last week I found tabs for Out of the Snow and Amazing Grace to rekindle my campfire guitar playing. Good stuff Russell!

Their albums were so unique......sooooo many different jondras. Almost all songwriters and singers sound the same on their albums. That wasn't true of Russell Smith you had rock,country, jazz,piano music ect. Saw them many times and NEVER get tired of his sound. Thank you Russell⚘️

Last Letter Home is arguably the best anti-war song ever written. That's just one song. Russ Smith contributed so much more. Thanks and RIP.
@jeffreyhorton8059 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, except Russell didn't write Last Letter Home. It was written by Butch McDade, the original drummer. They added a verse when the band recorded "Rides Again". The ARA are my all-time favorite band. Never saw them live. Saw them on Saturday Night Live.

Russell Smith was a great original. Coincidentally, last night I pulled out my old guitar and continued what has been years of work on Third Rate Romance. He was a fantastically gifted man. I didn’t know he’d passed on.

Wow ... I didn't know Russ had passed .. Wondered why we hadn't heard from him or the Aces in quite some time .. 😞 I always thought he had the perfect C & W voice, although I think he would have appeared more 'authentic" to some potential fans if he sported some facial hair and ditched the eyeglasses. I remember talking to one of his band members many years ago and they told me that Russ' marriage was a very rough and bitter one. In fact, it appears he worked that experience into at least one or two of the band's tunes -- "Norma Jean" and "Amazing Grace (Used to Be Her Favorite Song)". R.I.P. guy ..

In their hit making years, he looked younger than he sounded. His voice was a good fit for their songs. I'm sorry for the group's and the family's loss.
