I met Taylor in 1985 when he came to my studio to make his first recordings with a local band that included Jon Davison (the current singer of YES) playing the bass. They were super talented young men and full of charm and enthusiasm. We became fast friends. Some mornings, Taylor would wait in front of my house for me to wake up so we could talk about music. He was like a sponge; soaking it all up. I knew then that he was gonna go places with his talent. I could not imagine at the time just how far he would go. Godspeed, young brother.

RIP Taylor Hawkins. There has always been a lot of love out there for this band. David Grohl and Taylor pretty much the nicest guys in rock music. These guys have jammed with and collaborated with rock royalty (Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Brian May of Queen to name a handful), and Taylor was such a massive part of that. An excellent drummer and known to be an all around good soul. He added so much to the band's personality. Feel bad for Dave as he must be devastated; especially with the loss of bandmate Kurt Cobain, and now his stated best friend and cohort in FF 💔

Grohl has stated that he wanted to attain his private pilot license and this was the basis for this song. As a pilot myself, i'm not seeing the connection to the lyrics, but he also stated that he discovered that it was going to be a lot of study and effort to get the PPL and he stopped. And it is a lot of study, I think the PPL is the hardest to earn because you have to learn literally everything. It actually gets a bit easier in a lot of ways the as you acquire more advanced ratings. On another note, flying out of Boeing Field in Seattle, there is a departure procedure called the CBAIN1 departure which features a KURRT waypoint.

@@chrisschumacher4418 You would like to think... but that's not how everyone else thinks. The reason I brought up John Bonham was that he was greatest of that time... and everything Taylor Hawkins did in his lifetime was inspired by prior generations of drummers, like Bonham, Neil Peart, Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, Roger Taylor, etc... It's an honor to put Taylor Hawkins in the league of the greatest, like John Bonham. The same way we can bring up Mike Tyson & compare him w/ boxers like Sugar Ray Leonard, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Joe Louis, etc..
@chrisschumacher4418
@chrisschumacher4418 2 жыл бұрын
@@sumonjamal1653 I agree. I'm not fighting your stance on this. Being a 50 yr old person I get the Zeppelin reference, and respect it. John and Talor were in different times and both need respect, not comparison. Love to both, not comparison. In their time the influence was similar. And time will tell. Not taking away from either. JB was one of if not the greatest.

He said on the Kelly Clarkson show that the song was actually literally about him wanting to learn to fly a plane but he learned you needed to know a lot of math in order to do it so he said screw it I'm horrible at math...RIP Taylor "The Hawk" Hawkins 🦅

It's better to burn out, than to fade away. RIP Taylor H. I am personally amazed and enlightened by Taylor's ability and personality. Loss is real.

This is a great rock song for a number of reasons…one reason is illustrated in your discussion of what the lyrics mean…the lyrics are SO evocative, and we can all feel what the lyrics might mean, to us, without any definitive answer.

This may be the closest thing to a perfect pop rock song. Like you said, it's tune is so catchy you can ignore the lyrics, yet there is something there to hear when you go back to it. It's long enough to not want more, and short enough to not want less. The bridge gives variety without wandering too far. It's hard to point to any aspect of this song and say "they (he) didn't nail that."

Love your reaction to Learn To Fly. And I think you both hit the nail on the head perfectly, as far as the meaning of the song. Rock In Peace, Taylor Hawkins, gone way too soon. 🥁🎶❤️

I feel like my heart has been ripped from my chest. I still can’t believe it. Love and prayers to Taylor’s family, band mates, and poor Dave. He went through it with Kurt, now his “brother from another mother”. This is tragic. What a legend……with a smile that could light up the whole word!
