2022 BMW i4 review by The Straight Pipes. The BMW i4 M50 is putting down 536hp 586 lb-ft tq from 2 electric motors and a 81 kWh battery. At $87,035 CAD, would you take it over the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Polestar 2, BMW M3?

It doesn't make you nauseous because it's fast. It makes you nauseous because what you expect the car to do when you push the go pedal are not well aligned with what it actually does. It does not accelerate the same way a gas car does. If you drove it every day, your expectations would change, and you would no longer get nauseous. Of course, in a slow electric car, you don't notice it much.

Crazy the reception the i4 has had. When it came out people complained about the looks and how’s it’s not a ground up EV. But everyone else, the consumers seem to be liking it. I’ve read a lot comments about people going out driving it and ordering in almost every KZbin review.

The reason for the vibration before launch might be to get the motor in it's prime zone or to get the drive train out of the static friction zone. Rather than start from literally 0 rpm. That way you have torque earlier.

@@mt2nv1 The drive shaft tunnel is housing the battery so the floor can be lower. In a Model 3 the floor is crazy high up in the backseat so it's very uncomfortable for tall people. And that shuttering is only when you use the launch control, ie not normal driving. Big trunk > tiny frunk.
@mt2nv1
@mt2nv1 2 жыл бұрын
@@cthugha76 no, the gear tunnel doesn’t house the battery. The battery is under the floor. The trunk on the Y is much bigger and a fairer comparison considering the i4 is a hatchback. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they are in the game, but calling it anything other than a compromise is inaccurate. Imagine if Teslas shuttered on launch, the internet would be on fire! Great video gents. I think this is a great looking car and I would love to get behind the wheel of it. I would like to make a suggestion, though. Do not stop ranting about your charging situation. As a California driver, I do not have to deal with any of the charging issue you have to. This is not an issue with the car, it is an issue with the charging situation in your area. You and everyone there deserve better, but it will not get better unless people demand better. I think your rants will help the drivers in your area and help people invest in a better environment.

The BMW has very great design for the trunk area too. One can easily use tie down anchors to secure things and bulky items in the trunk area. When my brother tries to put his doggie cart in the Model Y's trunk, the doggie cart just slide left and right and back and forth a lot making scratches in the Model Y's trunk area. The BMW has a lot of tie down anchors for securing items, hooks on the side panels for grocery bags, etc. The German company has been in the business long enough to know how important it is to tie down things in the trunk especially if you have a fast car for cornering and accelerating and stopping.

As a Model S owner, I can say the hatch is a SUPER great feature. Tesla missed something here by not going with one on the Model 3. This BMW has the rear hatch, plenty of performance, a robust feature list. If you tick MOST to ALL of the options, the price comes out to around $70-$75,000 USD. A Tesla Model 3 with most to all of the options (including the full Autopilot suite) is around $75k as well. JMHO, but for the same $75k, the BMW seems to be the better car. That said - some will note that the Tesla is a little bit quicker, perhaps faster around a track, and has much better range. One thing that stick WAAAY out is the i4 M50 weighs FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS. A Model S is 300 lbs lighter and a Model 3 is 1000 lbs lighter - that's a HUGE difference. Both the Tesla and the BMW are excellent cars for the money, but clearly have some notable differences that will be appreciated by different market segments.
@bavariancarenthusiast2722

Yes - thinking about the weight difference, mainly the M3 is empty, much less tech, if insulation very few of it inside, its basically a tin box compared to a real car which can make the difference if that important to you. I drove Teslas and they are very noisy in the cabin, if you don't care its for you. 500kg difference is a lot though, totally agreed.

The model 3 performance was the slowest it ever performed vs the i4 drag race than in any other carwow video. Numerous videos from carwow have the Tesla clocking the 1/4 mile at 11.7 and 11.8. The Tesla has never done 12.0 in any other carwow video. Run what you brung, that’s fair, but the model 3 performance is faster than 12.0 1/4 mile, and definitely faster than the 11.9 the i4 put up. Additionally, the model 3 performance from the head to head video comparing it to the i4 is a different car than the one used for the drag race comparison. I wish carwow listed state of charge with their electric car comparisons and drag races.

I agree with you regarding the charging networks, but I'd be cautious when comparing other EV ranges quotes to Tesla range quotes. Fortunately for the consumer, there's plenty of real world range testing to be found.

@@ragweedmakesmesneeze I absolutely agree, unfortunately tesla does try to fudge numbers a little. We already see that with their 0-60 times using the whole rollout subtraction thing. The range really does become an afterthought to all the arguments comparing electric cars. Simply due to other car manufacturers having a terrible time with building a reliable infrastructure. One good source for that was MKBHD do the test with the Ford Mustang Mach E, a gas Audi, and a model S. As I understand it this car has less range, charges slower, has less acceleration in most circumstances, and is slower through corners due to the massive weight discrepancy. That said, it is a nicer car. Just depends on what you want from an EV I suppose. I find the range on my Sr+ to be adequate, but would like a bit more on trips where you end up running sentry, or dog mode for periods of time that end up sucking down the battery more than the pre-planned route had you believe. So in that regard this BMW would likely disappoint for the price.

Hey Jakub, a little pro advice, the rear stepping out and wanting to "go down the hill before the front" is called rotation, that means the rear tires are being overloaded before the front and therefore causing the car to turn without fully oversteering. That says more about the suspension setup of the car than the Regen.
@FutureKLX300SMowner
@FutureKLX300SMowner 2 жыл бұрын
Well if regen is causing it then I think it says something about the regen. If the regen is more aggressive on the front motor then it will cause the rear to step out no?
@georgegalanis2245
@georgegalanis2245 2 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure what he was talking about was when he would lift off the accelerator pedal going down a snowy hill, the agressive regen braking would cause the back end to slip and step out. Other EVs have this issue, particularly the RWD models (who litteraly can't regen the front wheels) and some AWD ones as well. It has little to nothing to do with the suspension setup and everything to do with how the regen is calibrated.
@georgegalanis2245
@georgegalanis2245 2 жыл бұрын
@@FutureKLX300SMowner it's actually the opposite, it is likely doing too much regen with the rear motor causing it. Already going downhill makes the weight transfer more towards the front, slowing down adds onto that effect. So you end up asking the axle with the least amount of grip to do most of the braking.
