RIP Rip. The Sanders Show’s Artie’s in my T.V. character hall of fame; Rip imbued him with a sort of punchy sentimentality that you can see even here in this quiet Letterman chat. Thanks, Don. For a certain class of entertainer, I know to stop by your channel when they pass.

I remember him from the 1985 movie Summer Rental as the eccentric old dude teaching John Candy how to sail. Wow he's only 52 in this, but looked more like 70. He had a super fascinating life with tons of stories probably

What a great actor-- so funny and menacing. He was best on Larry Sanders, but also great in Defending Your Life and so many other movies through the 70s, 80s and 90s. When i was a kid, i used to get him confused with Rip Taylor, and those of you who remember who Rip Taylor was, that's pretty hilarious. R.I.P. That's twice this week i found out about a death from your channel-- you're not only providing entertainment and television history, you're also providing a public service.

I remember seeing Rip Torn for the very first time in a Colombo television movie series picture, with Peter Falk. In fact, Rip was a regular guest star on Columbo. He was more of a dramatic serious méthode actor, from The Actors Studio, then a comic. But he had a shy and humble personality. Thank you. Johnny, Montréal, Canada 🇨🇦

Rip's range of acting on The Larry Sanders Show was so broad. They could write any story for his character and he was always great. Rip has great comic timing which not many actors of his calibre could pull off.

Watch the beginning again, (00:51) and watch how immediately Rip describes his character in Cross Creek, saying "Well, I play a backwoodsman, a poacher, a bootlegger, a subsistence farmer..." Dave innocently says "a guy in Florida." And Rip begins to laugh, thinking Dave has made a joke saying "in other words, every guy in Florida is a backwoodsman, a poacher, a bootlegger, subsistence farmer." But is that what's happening? Watch it again... (00:51)
