I didn't care for this one when I was a kid and always ignored it at the video store while I was renting Cinderella, The Dancing Princesses, Hansel & Gretel etc. for the hundredth time. Now as an adult I can appreciate its haunting beauty and environmental message.

This bring back my class 11 and 12 days. I could spend every class break / off period and sit in the library surrounded by all types of books and this rip van winkle, the sleeping Hollow, jane erye, pride & prejudice, oliver twist etc were my favourite. Today I was tired and was randomly typing for rip van winkle and to my astonishment I found this and was so glad.

The low budget, creakyish stage set perfectly matched the story's circa 1769 to '89 setting in a still primeval American Nieu Netherland wilderness, and its characters' inchoate, primitive frontier tries at habitat and polity formation.

This one I remember just for the one scene with the old guys playing ninepin in the mountains, and that's what we hear as thunder. Great to rewatch these now.... the old guys were the crew of the Hudson Expedition, which mutinied and set Captain Henry Hudson and his son and their supporters, and the sickest of the bunch, into small boats and set them adrift in what is now northern Canada, to sail home to England in 1611. To this day it is not known what became of Captain Hudson and his crew, they are lost to time. This tale brings them to life.

Oh my gosh…I haven’t seen this in over 30 yrs. My grandmother recorded this on a vhs tape for me and I had forgotten all about it. I was in my shop working with “Red Dawn” playing (original) and I heard the voice and it brought back the memory of this. The Dad plays RVW in this. Not sure why now after all the years. Funny how that works

Costume design by Eiko Ishioka, who would win an Oscar for Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula about 7 years later. And we can see Coppola's use of red color here, which he used again in Dracula. Coppola directed the hell out of this.
