Listening to the song brings the early 70s to a yesterday. Life was shaping itself and the objective was education education, Uganda was floating in its winds, military government of Amin ruled but who cared about it. The opportunity to get to university was presented. I couldn't refuse to go to Dar es Salaam Tanzania to Chuo Kikuu, leaving my memories of my best friends hopefully to meet them on return,but wapi!

@ Wanjohi Paul Infact you are very right. Verckys was second best Saxaphonist in Africa after Manou Dibango. Just listen to the ''NATAMBOLIMOTO'' Saxaphon and you will know why he was the Saxaphon maestro.

Absolutely....Verckys revolutionised Congolese music...remember he played with Franco earlier(sax) but after the rumble in the jungle concert (Mohammed Ali Vs George Foreman fight) in Kinshasa...he decided to try fusing a more frenetic and virtuoso lead guitar (influenced by B.B King and of course James Brown; all who came to Kin for the concert thanks to Don King). He forced Rhumba (rooted in Cuban folklore) to evolve to Rhumba rock (am hesitant to use 'soukous') and introduced 'atalaku' which gave music a more informal 'funky' feel; this of course was also partially from observing James Brown shouting orders to band members (to the beat) during a perfomance.(Interesting to note that Franco really disliked James Brown during that concert. and Verckys of course would like what Franco hated!) Of course naturally for atalaku, they ingeniously thought of starting off with hypnotic nursery rhymes and wise sayings that everyone could identify with. (Franco also reinforced his own style...literally talking and telling a story to accompany a long rhythm section, Verckys thought that the 'Sebene-section' should be for dancing, not talking!) This generation birthed Lipua Lipua and the Zaiko family. Of course Franco still had a stranglehold on the airwaves...but younger people were consuming these almost like you'd consume contraband...in the long term...contraband always wins! Verckys was a great rival of Franco; after leaving his band and dictatorial ways; a rivalry that gave us fantastic tunes.. Viva la musique africaine!
